The space between them closed in seconds.
Vance swung his heavy warhammer in a wide, sweeping arc. The weapon was wrapped in a crackling field of disruptive kinetic energy that hummed violently enough to shatter concrete before impact.
Arjun dropped into a low skid, the soles of his boots burning against the slick, wet asphalt. The hammer whistled inches over his visor, the air displacement alone slamming into his chest and knocking his suit's stability sensors into a yellow warning.

Arjun didn't wait to recover his balance. Pushing off the ground with his left hand, he brought his plasma rifle up point-blank beneath Vance's armpit—the narrow gap where his heavy power armor met the kinetic shield's projector node.
"End," Arjun hissed.
He fired.
The plasma round detonated in a blinding burst of turquoise light. The shockwave blew out the shield generator's dampeners, sending a cascade of violent electrical sparks down Vance's left arm. The massive commander roared in pain, stepping back as his kinetic barrier flickered, sputtered, and collapsed into nothingness.
"Useless rat!" Vance bellowed, his voice distorted by his suit's damaged vox-unit.
He backhanded Arjun with the heavy frame of his broken shield. The metal edge caught Arjun across his chest plate, tearing through the compromised alloy and hurling him ten feet back into the side of an overturned transport.
Arjun hit the steel wall hard, the breath exploding from his lungs. His vision swam in a sea of red system warnings.

"Arjun!" Maya's voice echoed in his ear, laced with panic over the comms channel. "The Covenant's secondary squad is breaching the western flank! Marcus is pinned down—we can't give you suppressive fire!"
"Hold... the line," Arjun choked out, pushing himself up against the side of the truck. His blood pooled inside the base of his visor, warm and metallic.
Through the haze of smoke and rain, Vance was advancing. The massive leader threw aside his ruined shield, gripping his warhammer with both hands. Blue energy surged down the shaft as he charged the weapon for a ground-shattering strike.
"You took 17-B, but you don't have the strength to hold it!" Vance yelled, his boots leaving heavy indentations in the asphalt with every stride. "This sector belongs to the Iron Covenant!"
Arjun leaned his head back against the truck, his chest heaving. His plasma rifle's primary magazine was completely depleted, the barrel smoking from the last shot.
No ammo.
No shield.
Three percent integrity.
He closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, letting his breathing slow. He felt the subtle, low-frequency hum vibrating through the soles of his boots—the artificial heartbeat of Sector 17-B settling into his system connection.
I don't need a gun, he thought. I am the Commander.
Arjun snapped his eyes open. He raised his bare left hand toward the ground between him and Vance.
"System command," Arjun commanded softly, his voice cutting through the noise of battle. "Reallocate perimeter defense power to local grid 17-B-09. Trigger full discharge."

The blue territorial grid lines beneath Vance's feet suddenly flared with blinding intensity.
Vance froze mid-stride as the ground beneath him didn't break—it ignited. The residual core energy that Arjun had locked into the sector's power grid surged upward in a localized lightning storm of raw plasma.
"What—?!" Vance choked out, his heavy armor seizing as thousands of volts of compressed system energy surged through his chassis.
The warhammer slipped from his paralyzed fingers, clattering onto the ground. The electrical feedback overload detonated the power cell on his back, throwing Vance forward onto his knees. Smoke poured from the seams of his scorched power armor as his system shut down entirely.

The remaining Covenant infantry, seeing their leader brought down by the very ground they walked on, halted their advance. Panic spread through their ranks like wildfire.
"His power... he's controlling the terrain!"
"Fall back! Retreat to Sector 12-A!"
The engines of the remaining troop transports roared as they pulled sharp U-turns, abandoning their wrecked vehicles and fleeing back into the gray fog of the neutral border.
Silence fell over the northern highway, broken only by the hiss of rain on burning metal.
Arjun slid down the side of the truck, sitting in the ash as his rifle dropped from his limp fingers.

Marcus came sprinting down the ruined highway, his anti-material rifle slung over his shoulder, boots splashing through the water. He skidded to a halt beside Arjun, looking from the scorched form of Vance to Arjun's shattered armor.
"You crazy bastard," Marcus breathed, dropping to one knee to check Arjun's vitals. "You used the zone's own core network as a landmine."
"It worked," Arjun rasped, a faint smile touching the corner of his bloodied mouth.
Maya's voice came over the comms, breathless with relief. "The Covenant signals are fleeing past the five-kilometer mark. Sector 17-B is completely clear."
"For now," Arjun said slowly.
With Marcus's help, he pulled himself up to a stand. He looked out past the burning wreckage, past the northern border, where the distant neon lights of other player factions flickered against the dark horizon.
They had held 17-B. But this was only the first wave of a war that spanned the entire continent.
Arjun straightened his back, locking his visor into place as his nanite repair system slowly ticked up to four percent.
"Tell Maya to lock the perimeter," Arjun said, stepping forward over the ruined highway. "We have a frontline to build."
