Chapter 8 - CHAPTER 8

The First Lesson

The training grounds of Thunder Peak sat atop a flat plateau, surrounded by jagged rocks that crackled with latent lightning energy. Even standing still, Lin Jing could feel the power in the air—every breath he took filled his dantian with stronger, purer qi than he'd ever experienced before.

CRIT PERCEPTION ACTIVATED

Effect: Can Sense Natural Energy Flows – Thunder Peak's Qi Resonance ×5

Elder Lei stood at the center of the grounds, holding a long staff wrapped in what looked like black thunderclouds. "Cultivation is not just about power," he said, his voice echoing across the plateau. "It is about balance. Thunder brings rain to nourish the earth—but unbridled, it can burn the land to ash."

He tapped his staff on the ground, and a single bolt of lightning struck the earth a few feet from Lin Jing's feet—leaving a perfect circle of scorched rock, not a single blade of grass disturbed outside its edge.

"Your first lesson: Control. We will begin with the Thunder Breathing Technique—the foundation of all Thunder Peak arts. Normally, disciples take three months to master the first stage. You will have three days."

Lin Jing sat cross-legged in the center of the scorched circle, following Elder Lei's instructions to draw in the mountain's lightning energy. With every breath…

CRIT! Stage 1 Complete – Energy Absorption Rate ×10

CRIT! Stage 2 Complete – Meridian Adaptation ×15

CRIT! Stage 3 Complete – Lightning Affinity Unlocked

In less than an hour, he'd mastered all seven stages of the breathing technique—something that usually took years for even the most talented disciples. When he opened his eyes, Elder Lei was standing over him, his expression unreadable.

"Show me," the elder said simply.

Lin Jing stood and raised his hand. A small bolt of golden lightning danced between his fingers—calm, controlled, not a single spark escaping to harm anything around him.

"Interesting," Elder Lei murmured. "You not only mastered the technique quickly—you've already begun to purify the lightning energy with your own qi. Most disciples take years to achieve that level of integration."

He walked to the edge of the plateau and pointed to a series of stone pillars standing at varying distances. "Next test: Thunder Spear Technique. You must hit each pillar with a lightning spear, in order from closest to farthest. Each spear must be exactly the same size and power—no more, no less."

Lin Jing focused, channeling the lightning energy through his arm. CRIT! Precision Control Activated

One by one, he launched spears of golden lightning. Each struck its target dead center, leaving identical holes in the stone pillars. When he finished, Elder Lei nodded slowly.

"Good. But speed is just as important as control. Try again—this time, hit all ten pillars in one breath."

Lin Jing took a deep breath, feeling the mountain's energy surge through him. INFINITE CRIT BARRAGE: LIGHTNING EDITION

Ten spears shot forward simultaneously, striking all ten pillars at once. The sound was like a single clap of thunder, and every pillar bore the same perfect mark.

That evening, as Lin Jing rested in his new quarters—a small stone cottage on the edge of the plateau—his system notified him of new progress:

SYSTEM UPDATE

Thunder Peak Techniques Mastered: Thunder Breathing (Max Stage), Thunder Spear (Max Stage)

Crit Tree Update – Combat Branch: Lightning Sub-Branch Unlocked

New Skill: Thunder Step – Movement Speed ×50; Leaves No Trace

A knock at the door interrupted his thoughts. He opened it to find a young man about his age, with short black hair and a friendly smile, holding two bowls of steaming rice porridge.

"Hey! I'm Zhou Kai—your fellow Inner Disciple here on Thunder Peak," the young man said, pushing his way inside. "Heard we got a new brother who mastered the breathing technique in an hour. Had to come see for myself—and bring dinner, 'cause I know Elder Lei forgets to feed his students when he's excited about training."

Lin Jing smiled and accepted the bowl. "Thanks. I'm Lin Jing."

"Everyone's talking about you, you know," Zhou Kai said, sitting cross-legged on the floor. "Stopping two corrupt elders, placing first in the Assessment, getting taken on by Elder Lei himself—you're basically a legend already. Though some of the senior disciples aren't too happy about it. Especially Liu Feng—he's been Elder Lei's top student for three years, and he doesn't like sharing the spotlight."

SYSTEM ALERT: Potential Rival Detected

Sub-Quest: Earn the Respect of Thunder Peak Disciples

Objective: Prove Your Worth in the Monthly Peak Challenge

Reward: Crit Tree – Energy Branch Unlocked

"The Monthly Peak Challenge?" Lin Jing asked.

"Every month, disciples compete to test their progress," Zhou Kai explained. "Top three get special resources—spirit stones, rare herbs, even ancient techniques. Liu Feng's won it the past six months in a row. Word is he's already challenging you to a duel at the next one."

Lin Jing stirred his porridge thoughtfully. "I don't want to make enemies. I just want to get stronger so I can protect the people I care about."

Zhou Kai grinned. "Then you'll just have to beat him fair and square. That's the Thunder Peak way—respect is earned through strength, not given."

The next morning, Elder Lei called Lin Jing to his personal training ground—a cave deep within the mountain where natural lightning constantly danced between crystal formations.

"I've been thinking about your progress," the elder said, standing before a massive crystal that glowed with purple light. "You have an unusual connection to energy—like you can amplify its effects beyond what should be possible. That gift will serve you well, but it also makes you a target."

He touched the purple crystal, and images appeared in the air before them—of other realms, of powerful cultivators fighting creatures of pure darkness.

"The ancient vault beneath our peak holds more than just power," Elder Lei said seriously. "It holds knowledge—knowledge of a threat that destroyed countless realms long ago. That's why your mission to investigate it is so important. But first, you must be strong enough to face what lies within."

He turned to Lin Jing, his eyes sharp with determination. "Today, we begin training for the Monthly Peak Challenge. But this time—we train not just for victory, but for survival."
