Chapter 3 - A Possibility I Wasn’t Ready For

"Amelia…you might be pregnant."

The apartment was quiet except for the faint ticking of the wall clock and the occasional sounds of cars passing outside.

For a moment I could not move.

Pregnant?

The word echoed in my head, heavy and unbelievable.

I stared at Mia as if she had just spoken a different language I did not understand.

"What?" I whispered.

Mia slightly shifted on the couch, studying my face carefully.

 "I'm serious." She said,

You said your period is late, right? That is not normal.

 My heart began beating faster.

"Yes…. but that does not mean— "

I stopped mid sentence.

Because deep down, I knew Mia was not wrong.

My mind began counting the days.

Then weeks.

A realization crept into my chest.

"Oh my God…" I murmured under my breath.

"What is it?"

"I… I think it has been almost six weeks."

 Her eyes widened.

"Six weeks?"

I covered my mouth with both of my hands, suddenly feeling light headed.

Everything was happening too fast.

Just a few hours ago my biggest fear was the divorce papers Daniel had pushed toward me across that restaurant table.

Now there was a possibility that I was carrying his child.

The child of the man who had just replaced me with another woman.

"I can not be pregnant," I said quickly, shaking my head.

Mia raised an eyebrow.

"And why not?"

"Because…. The doctor made it clear that I can't get pregnant.

"And Daniel just divorced me tonight."

The words sounded ridiculous the moment I said them.

pregnancy did not care about your divorce or what the doctor says.

Mia said softly and reached over to take my hands.

"Amelia," she said gently, "your body does not know that your marriage ended tonight.

Her words hit harder than I expected.

 My chest tightened painfully.

Images from earlier replayed in my mind.

Daniel sitting across from me.

With a cold expression on his face.

Sophia standing beside him with her hand resting possessively on his shoulder.

I felt my stomach twist a bit.

"What if it's true?" I asked quietly.

"Just what if I really am pregnant?"

Mia squeezed my hand reassuringly.

"Then we deal with it."

You thought I was gonna leave you?"

"But Daniel—"

"Forget about Daniel for a second," she interrupted firmly.

"That man already made his choice tonight."

Her tone was sharp, but I knew she was only trying to protect me.

Still, the thought refused to leave my mind.

If I was pregnant….

Then Daniel was the father.

The man who had just ended our three years of marriage as if it meant nothing.

I leaned back against the couch, staring blankly at the ceiling.

 Everything felt unreal.

For three good years, I believed Daniel and I were building a future together.

Now that future had shattered in a single evening.

And yet…something inside of me might still be connected to him forever.

Mia stood up and began pacing across the living room.

"Okay," she said after a moment. "First things first."

 I looked at her tiredly.

"What?"

"Young lady, we need to confirm whether you are actually pregnant or you are just stressed"

"But how?"

" Hospital."

The word made my breath seize.

"So soon? "

"Of course," Mia said. "You are not going to sit here stressing about it all week."

She crossed her arms and looked at me firmly.

"Will we go tomorrow morning"

Tomorrow

Less than twenty four hours from now, I might find out whether my life has changed forever.

My heart pounded at the thought.

"What if the test is positive?" I asked quietly.

 Mia stopped pacing.

Then she looked at me with a calm but serious expression.

"Then you will decide what you want to do."

 Her answer surprised me.

"You mean… not what Daniel thinks?"

Mia snorted.

"Daniel has lost every right to make decisions about your life the moment he handed you those divorce papers,."

A small, bitter smile appeared on my lips.

She was not wrong.

For a long time now, I have built my entire world around my husband.

His dreams.

 His career.

His happiness.

But tonight he proved that I had never been the center of his world.

I was just someone he could discard when something better appeared.

Mia walked back toward me and gently pulled me to my feet.

"That is enough thinking for today she said."

"But I can't sleep," I admitted.

"You will try."

She guided me toward the guest room down the hallway.

"You need to rest. Tomorrow might be a big day for us."

 I nodded slowly.

As I lay down on the bed a few minutes later, my mind refused to calm down.

 Pregnant

rang endlessly inside my head throughout the night.

I placed a hand over my stomach unconsciously.

Could there be a child there?

A child that belonged to both me and Daniel?

My chest tightened again.

If it was true. Then my life was about to change in a way I never expected.

 "No it can not be."

 But one thing was certain.

Daniel Carter had already chosen to walk out of my life.

Whether I carried his child or not…

I would have to face the world alone.

And tomorrow at the hospital I will finally learn the truth.
