Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: An Unexpected Proposal

The silence that followed lingered like the calm before a storm.

Aria stood near the center of the observation lounge while the man returned to the window, the city skyline reflecting faintly in the glass behind him.

Outside, students crossed the courtyard below, unaware that something far more significant was unfolding above their heads.

A quiet shift in the balance of power.

Aria studied him carefully now that they were alone in the room.

His posture remained relaxed, but there was a tension beneath it—the quiet alertness of someone who was always thinking several moves ahead.

A strategist.

Exactly the kind of person she would have avoided in her previous life.

But the Aria who had died in that hospital bed was gone.

Now she needed allies.

Powerful ones.

The man turned back toward her.

"You didn't ask my name."

Aria's gaze didn't waver.

"I already know it."

One corner of his mouth lifted slightly.

"Oh?"

"You're the CEO of Viren Global Holdings."

His expression didn't change.

But the faint amusement in his eyes deepened.

"That narrows it down."

Aria tilted her head slightly.

"You're also the man responsible for turning three failing financial groups into a single corporate empire in under five years."

Now his eyebrow rose.

"And?"

"You rarely appear in public unless there's something you want."

A brief pause followed.

Then he gave a quiet laugh.

"You've done your research."

Aria didn't respond.

Because what she hadn't said was more important than what she had.

She also knew something else about him.

Something no one in this time period knew yet.

In her previous life, his name had become synonymous with corporate domination.

Entire industries shifted when he entered them.

And eventually—

He would become one of the most feared figures in global finance.

The man studied her with growing interest.

"You're very well informed for a first-year academy student."

"Curiosity is useful."

"It is."

He walked slowly back toward the table.

Then he stopped only a few steps away from her.

Close enough that the quiet intensity of his presence became impossible to ignore.

"I have a question for you, Miss Valen."

"Yes?"

"Do you trust your family?"

The question struck like a hidden blade.

But Aria's expression didn't change.

Not even slightly.

"Why would you ask that?"

He watched her carefully.

"Because people who suddenly change their ambitions usually have a reason."

Aria let a few seconds pass before answering.

"Ambition doesn't require a tragedy."

"No," he agreed quietly.

"But it often follows one."

His gaze sharpened.

"You speak about power as if it's something you've already fought for."

Aria's pulse remained steady.

Every instinct she had developed during her previous life told her something important.

This man wasn't simply curious.

He was testing boundaries.

Trying to see how much truth she would reveal.

She gave him a calm smile.

"Perhaps I simply understand how important it is."

For several seconds he said nothing.

Then he nodded slightly.

"A reasonable answer."

But his eyes suggested he didn't fully believe it.

He moved past her and returned to the table again.

Then he said something unexpected.

"You're entering a very dangerous world."

Aria turned slightly.

"So are most people in this academy."

"No."

He shook his head.

"They're entering a competitive world."

His voice lowered slightly.

"You're entering something else."

Aria crossed her arms lightly.

"And what exactly do you think I'm entering?"

His dark gaze met hers again.

"A war."

The word hung in the room.

Cold.

Accurate.

Aria held his gaze without flinching.

"Business is always a war."

"Yes," he said quietly.

"But most people here are playing games."

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"You're not."

For the first time since entering the room, Aria felt something unusual.

A flicker of genuine surprise.

Because he had seen through her more clearly than anyone else so far.

And that made him both valuable…

And dangerous.

He leaned slightly against the table again.

"Which brings me to the real reason I invited you here."

Aria waited.

"I want to make you an offer."

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

"What kind of offer?"

"An opportunity."

He tapped the tablet once.

A company profile appeared on the screen.

A mid-sized technology firm currently struggling in the market.

"This company is about to collapse."

Aria studied the numbers briefly.

Declining revenue.

Investor withdrawal.

Internal leadership conflict.

Yes.

Collapse was likely within six months.

"What about it?" she asked.

"I'm considering acquiring it."

"That doesn't seem unusual for you."

"It isn't."

He turned the tablet toward her.

"But I want to see how you would handle it."

Aria looked up.

"You want my opinion?"

"No."

His voice remained calm.

"I want your strategy."

She studied him carefully.

"You're asking a first-year academy student to design a corporate recovery plan?"

"I'm asking someone whose instincts I trust more than most executives."

The compliment was subtle.

But deliberate.

Aria didn't respond immediately.

Instead she considered the situation.

If she accepted, she would be stepping directly into his sphere of influence.

If she refused, she might lose access to a powerful ally.

Her mind moved quickly.

Finally she asked,

"What do I gain from this?"

His smile returned.

"A practical lesson."

"And?"

"And my attention."

The words were simple.

But the implication behind them was enormous.

Attention from someone like him meant access to networks.

Information.

Influence.

But it also meant scrutiny.

Aria stepped closer to the table.

Her silver eyes met his.

"You're testing me."

"Yes."

"And if I fail?"

His voice was calm.

"Then nothing changes."

"And if I succeed?"

His gaze held hers steadily.

"Then we might start working together."

The room fell silent again.

Aria looked down at the company data on the tablet.

Her mind had already begun analyzing it.

Restructuring options.

Market repositioning.

Asset liquidation strategies.

Several possibilities formed instantly.

Then she looked back at him.

"You're making a mistake."

He raised an eyebrow.

"How?"

"You're giving me access to real corporate strategy."

"Yes."

"What if I use it against you someday?"

His answer came without hesitation.

"Then it will mean I chose the right person."

For a moment, Aria simply stared at him.

Then she realized something.

This man wasn't afraid of powerful enemies.

He welcomed them.

The thought made a slow smile appear on her lips.

"Fine," she said.

"I'll do it."

His eyes darkened slightly with interest.

"How long will you need?"

Aria picked up the tablet.

The company data filled the screen.

Her mind was already moving through possible solutions.

"Three days."

He nodded once.

"Impressive confidence."

She turned toward the door.

Then paused.

Without looking back, she said quietly,

"You still haven't introduced yourself properly."

He chuckled softly behind her.

"You already know my company."

"Yes."

"But not your name."

She glanced back over her shoulder.

His dark eyes held hers again.

Then he finally said it.

"Lucien Virell."

The name settled into the room like a quiet declaration of power.

Aria nodded slowly.

Lucien Virell.

The man who would eventually dominate the corporate world.

The man who had just invited her into his game.

She opened the door.

"Three days," she repeated.

Then she left the room.

Lucien remained where he stood, watching the door close.

A slow smile appeared on his face.

Because something about Aria Valen had just become very clear to him.

She wasn't afraid of power.

She intended to claim it.
