Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Something that wasn't lost

Chapter 3: Something That Wasn't Lost

The hallway was quiet.

Not completely silent… just quieter than the classroom.

Distant footsteps.

Muffled voices.

A normal school day continuing.

But for Tae Kook—

Everything narrowed down to one thing.

Her.

Standing right in front of him.

Calm.

Still.

Holding something in her hand.

"…You dropped this."

Tae Kook's gaze lowered slightly.

To her hand.

A small metallic piece.

Dark.

Thin.

Almost like a key… but not quite.

His expression didn't change.

But something behind his eyes did.

"…I didn't drop anything," he replied.

A pause.

She looked at him.

Not confused.

Not convinced.

Just… observing.

"…Are you sure?" she asked again.

Her voice was soft.

But steady.

Tae Kook stepped a little closer.

Not aggressive.

Not defensive.

Just enough.

"…Where did you find it?"

She didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she placed the object gently on his palm.

"…Near your desk."

A lie.

Tae Kook knew it instantly.

That thing…

Was never at his desk.

His fingers closed around it.

"…You shouldn't pick up things that aren't yours," he said quietly.

She tilted her head slightly.

"…Then you shouldn't carry things you don't want found."

Silence.

For a brief moment—

The air between them shifted.

Not heavy.

Not tense.

Just… aware.

Tae Kook slipped the object into his pocket.

"…Thanks."

Simple.

Short.

Dismissive.

He turned slightly.

Ready to leave.

"…Kim Tae Kook."

He stopped.

Slowly looked back.

"…What."

She met his gaze directly this time.

"…You're careful."

A pause.

"…But not careful enough."

Silence.

Tae Kook didn't respond.

Didn't question her.

Didn't deny it.

Instead—

He gave a small, almost invisible smile.

"…You talk more than I expected."

For the first time—

A faint reaction crossed her face.

Not surprise.

Not offense.

Just… something subtle.

"…Only when it matters," she replied.

A beat.

Then she turned.

And walked away.

Just like that.

Leaving him there.

"…That's new."

Tae Kook stood still for a moment.

Then—

He reached into his pocket.

Pulled the object out slightly.

The metallic piece reflected a faint glint of light.

"…How did she even see this…"

His eyes narrowed.

"…And why didn't she say anything else?"

That was the strange part.

She could have asked questions.

Pressed him.

Exposed him.

But she didn't.

"…Troublesome," he muttered.

Not annoyed.

Interested.

From around the corner—

A small head peeked out.

Ae Rin.

"…OH."

Her eyes were wide.

"…She talked to him."

A slow grin spread across her face.

"…This is getting good."

Later — Classroom

The lesson continued like normal.

Teacher speaking.

Students pretending to listen.

Some actually listening.

Tae Kook sat quietly.

As always.

But this time—

His attention wasn't outside.

It was ahead.

Two rows in front.

She sat there.

Reading again.

Like nothing happened.

"…She's weird," he thought.

Not in a bad way.

Just—

Different.

At the door—

Ae Rin still hadn't left.

"…I should go home…"

A pause.

"…But this is too interesting."

She leaned closer.

Watching both of them.

"…Kooky is hiding something."

"…And she knows something."

A grin.

"…Perfect."

Inside—

The bell rang.

Students began packing up.

Tae Kook stood.

Grabbed his bag.

And for a moment—

He hesitated.

Then—

He walked forward.

Past rows.

Past desks.

Stopping—

Right beside her.

She looked up.

"…What is it?"

Tae Kook didn't sit.

Didn't lean.

Just stood there.

"…That thing," he said quietly,

"…you didn't find it near my desk."

A pause.

She closed her book slowly.

"…Does it matter?"

"…It does."

Silence.

She looked at him.

Straight.

Calm.

"…Then be more careful next time."

No explanation.

No answer.

Just that.

Then—

She stood.

Walked past him.

Leaving again.

Tae Kook exhaled softly.

"…Definitely troublesome."

But this time—

There was no denial in it.

Outside the classroom—

Ae Rin ducked quickly.

"…I have to follow her too now."

A pause.

"…This is turning into a full investigation."

Inside—

Tae Kook slipped the metallic object back into his pocket.

His gaze lowered slightly.

"…Who are you…?"

Not suspicious.

Curious.

For the first time—

Something in his carefully controlled world…

Had stepped out of place.

And it wasn't him.
