Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: Lunch not Simple

Chapter 7: Lunch not Simple

The bell rang again, signaling lunch break.

The classroom erupted into noise—students gathering food, chatting loudly, laughing about the morning. Chairs scraped across the floor. Paper crinkled. Backpacks slung over shoulders.

Tae Kook remained seated near the window, quietly observing. His gaze wandered across the room, but it always found her. Han Soo Min.

She sat two rows ahead, just like before, quietly packing her things. No rush. No chatter. Calm. Unbothered by the chaos around her.

He sighed softly, tucking a strand of hair behind his ear, an almost invisible gesture.

"…Why do you do that?" he muttered under his breath.

She didn't hear. She never did.

"KOOKY!"

The voice hit him like a drum.

He looked sideways and groaned.

Of course, it was Yoo Min Ho—his loud, grinning, walking-annoyance of a friend. He waved enthusiastically as he pushed through the students.

"Let's go grab lunch! Don't tell me you're going to stare at her the whole time!" Min Ho teased, plopping into the seat beside him.

"…I'm not staring," Tae Kook said flatly.

"Oh, right. Totally not. Your eyes are glued, buddy. Everyone notices." Min Ho leaned back in the chair, stretching lazily. "Anyway, come on. Let's move."

Tae Kook didn't answer. He wasn't going to. Not to Min Ho.

He wasn't about to admit anything in front of his loud, grinning, terrible friend.

Ae Rin, crouched behind the doorframe with her notebook in hand, whispered dramatically to herself:

"…Observation 61: Yoo Min Ho is chaos incarnate."

"…Observation 62: Kooky secretly panics around chaos."

She scribbled furiously.

"…Observation 63: This is going to be excellent," she added, smiling wide.

Min Ho grabbed Tae Kook's sleeve.

"Come on, man! Don't be a stick in the mud. You can't just stare at a girl forever. That's creepy!"

"…I'm not staring," Tae Kook said again. His voice low, controlled. But his grip on his bag tightened slightly.

Min Ho smirked. "Sure, sure. Whatever you say. Anyway, lunch! You coming?"

"…Fine." Tae Kook stood, grabbing his bag carefully, then walked toward the exit, just ahead of Han Soo Min.

She had already left her seat, walking calmly toward the hallway, her small bag swinging lightly.

Tae Kook kept his distance, careful, but his eyes stayed on her. Every step, every motion, registered. She was careful too—not too fast, not too slow. Not looking at anyone else. Just walking. Always walking like she was her own world.

"…She notices things," Tae Kook thought quietly. "Or she doesn't notice anything. Either way… dangerous."

Min Ho, oblivious, kept up beside him, talking non-stop.

"You know," Min Ho said, grinning, "I think you're more obvious than you realize. That's why you should just talk to her already. Or are you too shy?"

"…Shut up," Tae Kook muttered.

"Sure, sure. No problem. But listen—if you do this wrong, she's gone, and then what?" Min Ho leaned in closer, lowering his voice, though still loud enough for others around to hear faintly. "You'll regret it forever, Kooky."

Tae Kook didn't respond. His mind was already calculating the safest distance to approach her without exposing himself, the safest angle, the timing.

Ae Rin, now hiding near the lockers, peeked around a corner and whispered with excitement:

"…Observation 64: Kooky planning. Dangerous. Must watch closely."

"…Observation 65: Yoo Min Ho complicates everything. Hilarious."

Han Soo Min stopped in front of a small courtyard with benches and a few students eating outside. She placed her bag carefully on the bench and sat down, opening her small lunch box.

Tae Kook slowed slightly, watching. His chest wasn't racing, he told himself. Not at all. He just… noticed things.

Min Ho leaned on the fence beside the courtyard, smirking.

"So… what's your plan? You're going to sneak up, sit nearby, say nothing, and die of embarrassment?" he teased.

"…I don't have a plan," Tae Kook said, voice low, steady.

"Right… right. That's your plan. Classic Kooky," Min Ho said, laughing, grabbing a small snack from his bag.

Tae Kook exhaled. He hated this.

Hated the loudness. Hated the teasing. Hated Min Ho noticing things he didn't want noticed.

And yet—

He couldn't look away from Soo Min.

She opened her lunch box slowly. She pulled out a small sandwich, carefully wrapped. She didn't look around. She didn't talk. She just… ate.

And Tae Kook felt something he didn't want to admit:

"…Curious," he muttered.

Not hungry. Just… curious.

Ae Rin, crouched on the other side of the fence, whispered excitedly:

"…Observation 66: Kooky is flustered."

"…Observation 67: Heart rate increasing slightly."

She scribbled faster. "…Observation 68: She hasn't noticed yet. That's important."

Tae Kook finally moved.

Slowly. Quietly. Like a shadow.

He approached the bench, keeping the angle subtle. Sitting nearby without being too obvious.

Soo Min glanced briefly at him, not with surprise. Just… awareness.

"…Kooky," she said softly.

The single word wasn't teasing, wasn't accusing. It was… calm. Neutral. Observant.

"…Kim Tae Kook," he replied quietly.

"…Yes," she said, her gaze returning to her sandwich.

The silence was… heavy.

Not awkward. Not tense. Just… aware.

Min Ho leaned against a nearby tree, munching his snack loudly.

"Wow, you two are weird," he whispered dramatically, though loud enough for the nearby bench to hear faintly.

"…Shut up," Tae Kook said under his breath, eyes still on Soo Min.

For the first time, Tae Kook noticed something subtle. Her fingers moved delicately as she wrapped a bite of sandwich, careful, precise, almost… intentional.

"…She notices everything," he thought quietly. "…Or nothing at all. Either way, this isn't simple."

Ae Rin, scribbling furiously behind the tree, whispered with glee:

"…Observation 69: Something is happening. Must continue watching."

Time seemed to stretch.

The few students around were too busy with their own lunch to notice anything unusual.

And yet… the air between Tae Kook and Han Soo Min was… something.

Unspoken. Unacknowledged.

Curious. Dangerous.

After several minutes, Tae Kook finally spoke. Quietly. Carefully.

"…You dropped this," he said, pulling the small metallic piece from his pocket—the one she had returned yesterday.

Han Soo Min looked up. For a moment, her eyes were sharp. Observant. Neutral.

"…I didn't," she said calmly.

"…You did," he replied softly.

Her gaze didn't waver. "…It's not important."

He studied her for a long moment. Quiet. Controlled. Interested.

Min Ho, meanwhile, had moved closer, pretending not to eavesdrop.

"So… lunch break is officially a spy movie," he whispered. "I'll be your camera guy, Kooky. Just don't die."

Tae Kook didn't respond. He didn't need to.

He only thought, "…Why does she make it so difficult?"

Ae Rin, scribbling one final note, whispered:

"…Observation 70: Kooky's world has just gotten complicated."

And for the first time that day, Tae Kook didn't disagree.

Because… it had.
