Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: That words that trembled

Amara didn't sleep that night.

Not even for a moment.

Zina's words kept replaying in her mind like a song she couldn't turn off.

"You already are losing him."

"He's still in love with you."

"Stop pretending."

For the first time, Amara stopped running.

She stopped hiding behind excuses.

Stopped telling herself she was "fine."

Because she wasn't.

And she hadn't been for a long time.

By morning, her decision was made.

She was done pretending.

Her heart raced as she walked across campus, scanning every familiar spot.

The lecture hall.

The cafeteria.

The tree.

That tree.

And there he was.

Daniel.

Sitting alone.

For a moment, Amara froze.

Fear crept in again, whispering the same old doubts.

What if it's too late?

What if he doesn't feel the same anymore?

What if you ruin everything again?

But then she remembered something else.

She had already lost him once.

She wasn't going to lose him again without trying.

"Daniel."

Her voice was soft.

But it carried everything she had been holding in.

He looked up.

Surprised.

"Amara…"

For a second, neither of them spoke.

The air felt thick.

Heavy with everything unsaid.

"Can we talk?" she asked.

Daniel hesitated.

Just for a moment.

Then nodded.

"Yeah."

They walked in silence.

Back to the place where everything had once felt simple.

The tree.

Amara's hands trembled slightly.

Her heart was beating too fast.

But this time…

She didn't hide it.

"I've been lying," she said suddenly.

Daniel frowned. "What?"

"I haven't been fine," she continued. "Not even close."

He watched her carefully.

Not interrupting.

"I said I was happy for you," she went on. "I said we were just friends. I said I didn't want to ruin things…"

Her voice cracked slightly.

"But none of that was true."

Daniel's expression shifted.

Something in his eyes softened.

"I was scared," Amara admitted. "Scared of getting hurt. Scared of losing myself. Scared of loving someone and not being loved the same way."

She took a shaky breath.

"But in trying to protect myself… I lost you anyway."

Silence.

Daniel looked away briefly.

Like he was trying to process everything.

"I didn't know how to say it before," Amara continued. "But I do now."

She stepped closer.

Her voice softer.

But stronger.

"I love you, Daniel."

The words hung in the air.

Raw.

Real.

Unfiltered.

For the first time…

Amara wasn't pretending.

Daniel didn't respond immediately.

And that scared her more than anything.

"I know I'm late," she said quickly. "I know I should have said this before. But I didn't understand it then—not the way I do now."

Her eyes began to fill with tears.

"But I do now. And I can't keep lying to myself anymore."

She swallowed hard.

"If there's even a small chance… if you still feel something for me…"

Her voice trembled.

"I'm here. Fully. No walls this time."

Silence.

Daniel exhaled slowly.

Running a hand through his hair.

The way he always did when things got overwhelming.

"You always do this," he said quietly.

Amara's heart dropped. "Do what?"

"Wait until I'm about to let go… then pull me back in."

His words stung.

Because they carried truth.

"I'm not trying to play with your feelings," she said quickly.

"I know," he replied. "That's what makes it harder."

Amara's chest tightened.

Daniel looked at her again.

And this time…

His eyes were full of emotion.

Confusion.

Pain.

Love.

All at once.

"You don't understand what it was like," he said. "Caring about you… wanting you… and feeling like I was the only one there."

Tears slipped down Amara's face.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

"I kept hoping you'd choose me," he continued. "Even just once."

Amara shook her head, crying now.

"I'm choosing you now."

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

Like he was fighting something inside himself.

"And Zina?" he asked.

The question hit differently.

Amara hesitated.

Then said honestly:

"I know about her."

Daniel's eyes opened.

"What do you mean?"

"She talked to me," Amara said.

Surprise flashed across his face.

"She… what?"

"She told me everything," Amara continued. "About you. About how you feel."

Daniel let out a breath.

Almost like he didn't expect that.

"And she's right," Amara added softly. "You deserve someone who's sure about you."

She stepped closer again.

"I'm sure now."

Silence.

Everything came down to this moment.

Daniel looked at her.

Really looked at her.

Searching for something.

And then…

He spoke.

"I never stopped loving you."

Amara's heart jumped.

"But…" he added.

And just like that…

Fear crept back in.

"I'm tired, Amara."

Those three words carried weight.

Deep.

Heavy.

Real.

"I can't keep going back and forth," he said. "I can't keep hoping one day you'll be ready."

Amara's chest tightened.

"I need something real," he continued. "Something certain. Not something that disappears when things get hard."

"I won't run this time," Amara said quickly.

Daniel looked at her.

And for a moment…

It felt like he wanted to believe her.

But then…

Zina's voice echoed from a distance.

"Daniel!"

They both turned.

Zina stood a few steps away.

Watching them.

Calm.

Quiet.

Understanding.

The moment shifted.

Again.

Daniel looked between both of them.

Caught.

And Amara realized something.

This wasn't just about her anymore.

This time…

She wasn't the only one who could get hurt.

Her heart pounded.

Because now…

The choice wasn't hers alone.
