Chapter 7 - Chapter 7 — First Coordinated Battle

The sun barely pierced the smoke-filled sky. The city smelled of ash, blood, and burnt metal.

Adrian led his group through the ruined streets, dagger in hand, eyes scanning every corner. His breathing was calm—controlled. Every movement precise.

Behind him, Mira, Leo, and Tobias moved carefully. Each step was measured. None dared to stray.

"Stay close," Adrian said sharply. "Don't get ahead of me."

Leo swallowed. "Y-yeah… we'll stay close."

Mira crossed her arms and muttered, "We're not kids. Don't boss us around."

Adrian didn't respond. Not now. Words didn't matter. Survival did.

They rounded a corner and stopped. A small plaza stretched before them, littered with wreckage: overturned streetlights, crushed cars, shattered storefronts.

Two gates hovered above. From each, two Armored Ravagers dropped. Four in total.

And movement along the edges of the plaza caught Adrian's attention. Three more humans were already fighting: a speed-type boy darting around, a woman controlling flames, and another man wielding a glowing bat.

Adrian paused. Observation first. Always observation.

He glanced at his status window.

"…Not enough to fight them all at once," he muttered.

He turned to his group. "Mira, fire at its legs. Leo, distract the arms. Tobias, stay low and cover the rear. Follow my lead."

They all hesitated for a moment. Adrian didn't wait. He stepped forward, dagger ready.

The massive monster roared, shaking the ground. It slammed its right arm down toward Adrian. He rolled under the blow, the impact sending a shockwave past his face.

Mira reacted immediately, sending a stream of fire toward the creature's knees. Sparks flew. Smoke clouded the battlefield. Leo swung his plank at the creature's left arm, cracking it slightly. Tobias dodged, narrowly avoiding debris from the impact.

Adrian observed everything—every twitch, every pause, every imbalance. "…Weak points," he muttered. "It has them too. Find them."

The monster raised its arm to strike again. Adrian waited. Closer. Closer. Then he dashed under the swing and slashed at the side of its knee, the dagger embedding slightly.

The creature staggered. Adrian jumped back, repositioning. "…Good. Now, group—synchronize."

They obeyed. Clumsy, imperfectly—but they obeyed. Mira's flames burned, Leo's strikes distracted, and Tobias struck weakly at its legs but enough to make it stumble.

Adrian waited for the exact opening he wanted. There it was: a slight shift in its balance, its armored arm slightly exposed. He lunged, dagger in hand, and struck two precise blows. The creature roared, swinging wildly, but Adrian's group forced it off balance again.

The monster stomped hard, cracking the pavement. Adrian rolled aside, narrowly avoiding the impact. "…Too slow," he muttered, recalculating his next strike. He glanced at Mira. "Fire, full intensity. Aim for the gap between the armor plates!"

Flames erupted, scorching the monster's side. Black smoke filled the air, and cracks appeared in its armor. "Leo!" Adrian shouted. "Hit the gap now!" Leo swung his plank, enhanced by adrenaline and fear. It connected perfectly, striking the gap. Sparks and fragments flew. The monster staggered violently. Tobias, inspired, jabbed with his pipe at its leg. It roared in pain, staggering again.

Adrian seized the moment. He leapt onto the side of its leg, scaling lightly. Dagger in hand, he struck two more precise hits. The monster froze. Then collapsed.

Silence fell. The dust settled. Adrian stood on top of the wreckage, breathing slightly heavier but composed. His group approached, awe written across their faces.

"You… you did that?" Mira whispered.

Adrian surveyed the area. More gates rippled in the distance. More monsters would come. "…Stay sharp. We survive, we get stronger. That's the only rule."

They nodded. For the first time, Adrian felt a shift—not just in himself, but in the people around him. They were learning. Adapting.

The city lay quiet for a moment. Not safe. Not by any means.

Adrian looked at the sky. The black gates still hovered. Pulsing. Watching. "…They're coming," he said softly.

Mira glanced at him. "Are you ever… afraid?"

Adrian shook his head slightly. "…Afraid doesn't help. Strategy does."

The group followed him. Slowly. Carefully.

The system observed everything.

Adrian Vance—ranking: high-potential leader. Multiple system observers detected his coordination ability.

And somewhere beyond the gates, the system waited. Watching. Evaluating.
