Chapter 3 - First Stand

The snarls grew into roars as massive shapes crashed through the temple gates. Two corrupted beasts emerged, once likely graceful forest wolves, now twisted with black stone-like scales and glowing red eyes. Their claws scraped against the courtyard stone as they advanced.

Hana's golden glow flickered, wavering as fear pricked at her heart. "I… I can't hold it steady," she whispered, her hands trembling.

Ren moved to stand in front of her, though he knew he had no strength of his own to fight. "Look at me, Hana," he said firmly, his voice steady despite the pounding in his chest. "You're not alone in this. We're together, always."

As their eyes met, a surge of warmth flowed from Hana to Ren through their clasped hands. The golden light from her body split, wrapping around him like a gentle shield. He felt a new energy coursing through him, like he could channel every bit of her power and focus it where it was needed.

"Now, Hana!" Lyra called out, raising a staff that blazed with silver light. "Focus your power into a barrier, Ren will help you shape it!"

Hana took a deep breath, closing her eyes again. She thought of Ren's smile, of their late-night talks, of the life they'd built together. The golden glow intensified, and Ren guided it forward with his hands, molding the light into a wall that spanned across the courtyard.

The first beast lunged, slamming into the barrier with a deafening crash. The light shimmered but held firm, sending a shockwave back that forced the creature to stumble.

"Their scales are weak to pure light!" Lyra shouted as she struck the second beast with her staff, its silver energy burning away patches of corruption. "Hana, push your power outward, not just forward!"

Ren nodded, understanding what she meant. He shifted his focus, helping Hana spread the golden light like ripples on water. The barrier expanded, washing over both beasts. Where the light touched their stone-like hides, the corruption began to crack and crumble, revealing soft fur beneath.

With a final roar that was half pain and half relief, the wolves collapsed as the last of the corruption faded away. Their red eyes softened to warm brown, and they looked at Hana and Ren with gratitude before bounding back into the forest.

The golden light faded from Hana and Ren, leaving them breathless and leaning against each other.

"That… that was incredible," Hana said, laughing weakly as she rested her head on Ren's shoulder. "I didn't know I could do something like that."

"You did it because you had something worth protecting," Lyra said, walking over with a small smile. "And Ren, your ability to channel and stabilize her power is just as vital. The Ancient God Body has never been meant to stand alone."

As the sun began to set over the temple, painting the sky in shades of orange and purple, Lyra led them to a small room inside the temple, warm, with soft beds and a table filled with bread, fruit, and honeyed tea.

"Eat," she urged them. "You'll need your strength. Tomorrow, we'll begin your training. But more than that, we need to travel to the Heart of Aetheria, where the source of the Shadow Blight is said to lie. It will be a long journey."

Ren poured tea for Hana, his hands still slightly shaky. "Do you think you're ready for this?" he asked softly.

Hana took a sip of tea, looking out the window at the glowing flowers in the courtyard. "I'm scared," she admitted. "But I know we'll face it together. And maybe… maybe helping this world will bring us closer to finding our way home."

They ate in comfortable silence, watching the stars begin to appear in the sky, different constellations than the ones they knew from Earth, but just as beautiful. Ren reached across the table and took Hana's hand, and in that moment, even in a strange world far from home, it felt like they had everything they needed.
