The morning sun in Aetheria rose with a soft greenish glow, filtering through the temple's crystal windows and waking Ren and Hana from their first night in the new world. The bed was comfortable enough, but Hana had still curled up against Ren, just as she did back in Tokyo.
"Morning," Ren whispered, pressing a light kiss to her forehead. "You slept well?"
"Considering we fought monsters yesterday," Hana laughed, sitting up and stretching. "I keep thinking I'll wake up in our apartment and realize it was all a dream."
Before Ren could respond, Lyra knocked gently on the door. "Are you two ready? Your first training session starts now."
They followed her to a wide open space behind the temple, where stone pillars stood in a circle, each carved with different symbols from the altar the day before.
"Today, we'll focus on control," Lyra explained, holding up a small glowing orb. "Hana, your power responds to emotion, but raw feeling alone won't be enough for the journey ahead. You need to call it forth at will, and shape it precisely."
She tossed the orb into the air, and it split into a dozen smaller orbs that floated around the pillars. "Your task: hit each pillar with a burst of light, no more, no less. Ren, you'll help her focus her energy so it doesn't spread."
Hana took her place in the center of the circle, with Ren standing just beside her. She closed her eyes, trying to summon the golden glow as she had the day before, but nothing happened.
"I can't feel it," she said quietly, frustration creeping into her voice. "It only came out when we were in danger."
"Emotion is your trigger, but it doesn't have to be fear or urgency," Lyra said calmly. "Think of something steady, something that grounds you."
Ren took her hand. "Remember when we first started dating? We'd sit by the river near your university, and you'd point out all the different birds. You were so calm then, so sure of what you wanted."
Hana smiled at the memory. She thought of the gentle sound of water, the warmth of the sun on her skin, the way Ren had held her hand just like this. Slowly, a soft golden light began to build around her, quieter than before, but steady.
"Now, guide it," Ren said, his own hands beginning to glow with a faint gold tinge as he channeled her power.
Hana extended her free hand, and a thin beam of light shot out, striking the first pillar perfectly. One by one, she hit each pillar in turn, her movements growing more confident with every shot. When the last orb faded, she opened her eyes, beaming with pride.
"See?" Ren said, squeezing her hand. "You've got this."
After training, Lyra led them to the temple's archives, where scrolls and stone tablets lined the walls. "The Heart of Aetheria lies beyond the Whispering Mountains, through the Crystal Marshes," she explained, unrolling a large map. "It will take at least two weeks to reach, if we don't run into more corrupted creatures along the way."
She paused, looking at them seriously. "There's something else you need to know. The Shadow Blight isn't just a natural corruption, it's being spread by someone, or something, that wants to drain Aetheria of all light. The ancient texts say the bearer of the Ancient God Body must face this source directly."
Hana's expression grew solemn, but she didn't look away. "Then that's what we'll do."
As they prepared for the journey, packing food, water, and a small bag of supplies, one of the temple guards approached with two leather pouches. "For you," he said, bowing. "These contain star crystals, they glow when corrupted creatures are near, and can help light your way through dark places."
Ren thanked him, then turned to Lyra. "What about you? Will you come with us?"
"I must stay to protect the temple," she said, placing a hand on each of their shoulders. "But you won't be alone. There are others across Aetheria who oppose the Shadow Blight, you'll find allies along your path."
That evening, as they stood at the temple gates ready to depart, Hana looked up at the structure one last time. She thought of home, of her family and friends, but she also thought of the wolves they'd saved, and all the other lives they might be able to protect.
Ren slung their pack over his shoulder and held out his hand to her. "Ready?"
Hana took it, a determined smile on her face. "Ready."
They stepped into the path leading toward the Whispering Mountains, the star crystals in their pouches beginning to glow with a soft blue light. The journey ahead was long and uncertain, but together, they were ready to face whatever came next.
