Chapter 268 - Chapter 268: Sorry, I'm Late!

The border of the Land of Hot Springs had been transformed into a literal hell on earth.

Among the shattered walls and ruins, burning trees crackled, sending plumes of thick black smoke to merge with the leaden, grey sky.

The earth was fractured, littered with craters from ninjutsu impacts—some several meters deep, filled with pools of dark red blood.

Broken kunai, shattered blades, and scorched headbands were scattered across the dirt, silent witnesses to the carnage.

The air was saturated with the pungent stench of iron, charred flesh, and the sharp ozone scent left behind by Lightning Style.

The Hidden Leaf's defensive line was collapsing inward.

Despite Jiraiya's summoned Gamabunta fighting desperately on the left flank, and Minato Namikaze flickering through the enemy ranks as the Yellow Flash—taking lives with every manifestation—the situation continued to deteriorate.

The reason was simple: the Hidden Cloud had deployed their ultimate weapons of mass destruction.

"ROAR—!!!"

In the center of the battlefield, the gargantuan form of the Eight-Tails, Gyuki, loomed like a moving mountain.

Eight massive octopus tentacles lashed out frantically; every strike tore the earth asunder, crushing Konoha's fortifications and the ninjas within them into paste.

A Tailed Beast Bomb began to condense in its maw, the dark red sphere of chakra radiating an aura of absolute annihilation.

On the right flank, the Two-Tails, Matatabi, ravaged the ranks as a cat-demon of blue hellfire.

Everywhere it passed, pillars of flame shot into the sky, the extreme heat melting solid rock and vaporizing human flesh instantly.

"Hold the line! Contract the formation!"

Minato Namikaze's voice echoed across the field. He had just used the Flying Raijin to save a squad pursued by the Eight-Tails' tentacles, sweat beading on his brow as his breathing grew ragged.

Even the Yellow Flash could not be in two places at once to stop the rampage of two full-scale Tailed Beasts.

"Lord Jiraiya!" a Konoha Jonin shrieked. "The left flank is at its breaking point!"

Jiraiya stood atop Gamabunta's head, his hands blurring through signs as his white hair stood on end like needles. "Sage Art: Needle Hell!"

Countless hardened hair-needles rained down on the Eight-Tails like a storm, but most were deflected by the beast's thick, rubbery hide. The few that pierced through failed to land a lethal blow.

Gyuki let out a roar, a tentacle whipping around with crushing force. Gamabunta barely managed to leap away, the ground where he stood pulverized into a crater.

"We're in deep trouble..." Jiraiya spat, gritting his teeth.

His Sage Chakra reserves were draining rapidly, and the Eight-Tails didn't look anywhere near its limit.

Worse still, the Third Raikage, A, stood on a high ridge at the rear, looking down at the battle with cold, clinical eyes.

He had not yet personally joined the fray, but the mountain-like pressure of his presence was already causing Konoha's morale to plummet.

"Bee! Have you had your fun yet?" the Raikage's voice boomed like thunder.

"Yo! Big Bro! This king is just getting started, you fool, you jerk!" Killer Bee's rhythmic rapping vibrated from the Eight-Tails' mouth, but the charging speed of the Tailed Beast Bomb accelerated.

The dark red orb of energy expanded until it was the size of a house, the density of the power warping the very air around it.

"Target: Konoha Command HQ!" the Raikage ordered.

The Eight-Tails tilted its head back, ready to fire.

Minato's pupils contracted as he reached for his specialized kunai—he had to use a Space-Time Barrier to teleport that blast away, but he had no certainty he could move that much energy without being consumed by it.

Jiraiya prepared for a suicidal charge, Sage Chakra condensing in his palms.

Every Konoha ninja felt the cold shadow of despair.

In that split second of impending doom—

A light ignited on the horizon.

At first, it was just a pinprick, barely visible against the murky sky.

But in the next heartbeat, it erupted into a dazzling ribbon of pure white radiance that spanned the heavens!

The speed of the light transcended perception.

One moment it was at the edge of the world; the next, it had descended upon the battlefield!

"Wha—?!" The Third Raikage's gasp had barely left his lips.

That pure white blade-light struck the condensing Tailed Beast Bomb with surgical, unadorned precision.

There was no explosion.

There was no deafening roar.

The moment the Tailed Beast Bomb touched the blade-light, it began to dismantle and annihilate from its core, like ice under a summer sun.

The gargantuan energy capable of deleting a city simply vanished into the void.

But the blade-light did not stop.

It continued its downward trajectory, carving through the Eight-Tails' massive body.

SQUELCH—!!!

The agonizing sound of thick hide being torn like wet silk shrieked across the field.

Gyuki's roar died in its throat.

The legendary body that claimed it could tank S-rank ninjutsu was nothing before that white edge; from shoulder to waist, the beast was bisected by a massive, bone-deep diagonal gash.

Dark red blood erupted from the wound like a high-pressure waterfall!

The residual power of the strike slammed into the earth below.

BOOM-RUMBLE—!!!

The earth moaned in agony.

A bottomless, yawning abyss, dozens of meters wide, snaked away from the Eight-Tails toward the horizon.

Rocks shattered and the ground collapsed as if the gates of the underworld had been pried open!

The trench stretched for over a kilometer, physically splitting the battlefield in two!

Dead silence.

Konoha and Cloud shinobi alike were frozen in place, staring in bug-eyed shock at the impossible scene.

The Eight-Tails' massive frame shuddered before it crashed to its knees.

Tailed Beast chakra leaked frantically from the wound in an attempt to regenerate, but the edges of the cut glowed with a strange white light that neutralized the healing process.

"BEE!!" The Third Raikage's eyes turned bloodshot as lightning exploded around his body. He prepared to lunge forward.

But he was too late.

The Eight-Tails' body shrank and warped at high speed, finally reverting to the human form of Killer Bee. He lay in a massive pool of his own gore, a horrific wound across his chest nearly splitting him in two. His pulse was a fading flicker; he was on the doorstep of death.

"MEDICAL CORPS! NOW!!!" the Raikage's roar shook the air, and several Cloud medics scrambled toward the fallen Jinchuriki.

But in that moment, every eye on the field turned toward the origin of the strike.

In the distance, the sun was sinking below the horizon, painting the clouds a blood-soaked crimson.

Amidst that red sky, a single, pure white cloud drifted forward.

A silhouette stood atop it. Because of the backlighting, his face was obscured, leaving only a lean profile and long hair fluttering in the wind.

He rode the cloud with a calm, unhurried pace, as if he were taking a post-dinner stroll rather than entering a world war.

The dying sunlight spread beneath him like a golden carpet, making him look like a celestial being from ancient myth.

The cloud reached the center of the battlefield and stopped.

Saiki stood at the edge, looking down at the wreckage with eyes that were perfectly calm and empty of malice.

His gaze swept over the mangled Bee, the furious Raikage, the stunned Jiraiya and Minato, and finally settled on the exhausted Konoha ninjas who were just now beginning to feel a spark of hope.

"Sorry, I'm late," he said softly. His voice wasn't loud, yet it resonated clearly in the ears of every soul present.

Then, he took a step forward and walked off the cloud.

He used no jutsu, wove no signs. He simply walked down from a height of a hundred meters as if descending a flight of stairs.

Invisible steps seemed to support his weight with elegant poise.

Finally, he landed at the very front of the Konoha line, standing at the edge of the bottomless abyss he had just carved.

He turned to face the Hidden Cloud army.

The sunset stretched his shadow across the chasm.

Saiki raised a hand and pointed directly at the Third Raikage, his voice carrying an unquestionable, divine authority:

"Next, it's your turn."
