Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Night Gala

The car stopped in front of the hotel.

Aarav stepped out slowly.

And for a moment…

He forgot how to breathe.

The Oberoi Grand Hotel stood like a monument of power.

Golden lights.

Valet lines filled with luxury cars—Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini, Bentley.

Men in tuxedos.

Women in gowns that probably cost more than his entire life.

This wasn't a party.

This was a battlefield… disguised as elegance.

Aarav adjusted his suit.

Perfect fit.

Perfect look.

Perfect lie.

"Remember," the voice in his earpiece said,"you are Rayan Khan."

The first man's voice.

Calm.

Watching.

Always watching.

Aarav swallowed.

"Yeah… trying to believe that myself."

He walked forward.

Step by step.

Each one heavier than the last.

At the entrance, a guard stopped him.

"Invitation, sir."

Aarav froze for half a second.

Too long.

Mistake #1.

But before panic could take over—

He reached into his pocket and pulled out the black card.

The one with the broken crown.

The guard looked at it.

His expression changed instantly.

Respect.

Fear.

Submission.

"Welcome, Mr. Khan."

The doors opened.

And Aarav stepped inside.

The hall was breathtaking.

Crystal chandeliers.

Soft jazz music.

People laughing, drinking, networking.

Deals being made with smiles that hid knives.

Aarav's eyes moved constantly.

Left.

Right.

Everywhere.

"Stop scanning like a criminal," the voice in his ear said.

"Act natural."

Aarav forced himself to relax.

"Easy for you to say…"

A waiter approached with champagne.

Aarav took a glass.

His hand trembled slightly.

He hid it quickly.

"Good," the voice said."Confidence. Even fake confidence works."

Aarav took a slow sip.

Bitter.

Expensive.

Unfamiliar.

"Now listen carefully," the voice continued."Your objectives remain the same."

Aarav whispered under his breath—

"Survive… and find the hidden player."

"Correct."

His eyes scanned the room again.

But this time—

Not like prey.

Like a hunter learning his surroundings.

There were dozens of people.

All rich.

All powerful.

All smiling.

But one of them…

Was not what they seemed.

"Any hints?" Aarav asked quietly.

A pause.

Then—

"No."

Aarav clenched his jaw.

"Of course not."

He started walking deeper into the crowd.

Listening.

Observing.

Adapting.

"Rule one," the voice said,"billionaires don't look impressed."

Aarav nodded slightly.

So he changed.

His posture straightened.

His expression calmed.

His eyes… sharpened.

Now he didn't look lost.

He looked like he belonged.

Almost.

"Rule two," the voice continued,"they don't chase conversations… they attract them."

Right on cue—

A man approached him.

Mid-40s.

Sharp suit.

Sharp eyes.

"Rayan Khan," the man said with a smile,"I've heard a lot about you."

Aarav's heart skipped.

But his face didn't change.

"Only good things, I hope," he replied smoothly.

The man chuckled.

"We'll see."

A test.

Everything here was a test.

"I'm Vikram Sethi," the man said, extending his hand.

Aarav shook it.

Firm.

Controlled.

"What brings you here tonight?" Vikram asked.

Aarav paused for a fraction of a second.

Thinking fast.

"Opportunity," he said.

Vikram's smile widened slightly.

"Good answer."

But his eyes…

They didn't smile.

"Tell me," Vikram continued,"what do you think about risk?"

Aarav tilted his head slightly.

"Depends."

"On what?"

Aarav took a slow sip of champagne.

Buying time.

Thinking.

"On who's taking it," he said finally.

A pause.

Then Vikram laughed.

Genuinely this time.

"I like you."

But something still felt… off.

"Careful," the voice in Aarav's ear whispered."He's testing you too much."

Aarav's instincts sharpened.

"Is he the hidden player?" Aarav thought.

Before he could analyze further—

A sudden silence fell across the hall.

The music stopped.

Everyone turned.

A man had entered.

Tall.

Elegant.

Dangerous.

He didn't walk—

He owned the space.

The air itself felt heavier.

"Who is that…" Aarav whispered.

No answer.

For the first time—

Even the voice in his ear was silent.

The man's eyes scanned the room slowly.

Like a king inspecting his kingdom.

Then—

They stopped.

On Aarav.

A chill ran down his spine.

The man smiled.

Not friendly.

Not warm.

Predatory.

And then—

He started walking toward him.

Vikram stepped back slightly.

Respect.

Fear.

Recognition.

Aarav's heartbeat exploded.

"Why is he coming here…?"

No response.

No guidance.

No help.

Just silence.

The man stopped in front of Aarav.

Close enough to feel his presence.

"Interesting…" he said softly.

Aarav forced himself to stay calm.

"Something wrong?" he asked.

The man chuckled.

Low.

Dangerous.

"Everything."

A pause.

Then he leaned slightly closer.

And whispered—

"You're new."

Aarav's blood froze.

"Am I?" he replied, trying to hold his ground.

The man smiled wider.

"Very."

Silence.

Heavy.

Deadly.

Then—

He straightened.

Looked around the hall.

And said loudly—

"Ladies and gentlemen…""It seems we have a fresh player tonight."

The entire room turned.

Eyes locked on Aarav.

Trapped.

Exposed.

Targeted.

Aarav's mind screamed:

This is it.

This is where I die.

The man looked back at him.

Amused.

Interested.

And then—

He said the words that shattered everything—

"Let's see how long you last."
