Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: The Alliance of Liars

The wind howled between them.

But neither Aarav nor the girl moved.

Below them—

A city full of light.

Above them—

A sky full of silence.

And between them—

A decision that could kill them both.

"Let's change the game."

Aarav's words still hung in the air.

The voice in his ear was furious now.

"ARE YOU INSANE?!"

"Step away from her immediately!"

"She is a Tier-3 operative—high risk, highly expendable!"

Aarav didn't respond.

Because for the first time—

He wasn't listening.

He was thinking.

His way.

"You want to form an alliance?" the girl asked calmly.

Aarav nodded slightly.

"Temporary," he said.

She raised an eyebrow.

"Of course."

A faint smirk appeared on her lips.

"Because permanent alliances don't exist in this world."

Aarav almost smiled.

"Exactly."

Silence.

Then—

"Why?" she asked.

Aarav's eyes sharpened.

"Because someone set both of us up."

A pause.

"And I don't like being used."

She studied him carefully.

Analyzing.

Weighing.

Deciding.

"You're smarter than you look," she said.

Aarav chuckled lightly.

"I'll take that as a compliment."

Another pause.

Then—

She stepped forward.

Close enough that her voice dropped to a whisper.

"You're right."

Aarav's expression didn't change.

But inside—

Something clicked.

"There's a second layer to this mission," she continued.

Aarav frowned.

"Explain."

She glanced around once.

Careful.

Precise.

Then said—

"You were never meant to survive the gala."

Aarav's blood ran cold.

"…what?"

"They expected you to fail the poison test," she said.

"Or die during the attack."

A pause.

"But you didn't."

Aarav clenched his jaw.

"So now they want you dead anyway."

She nodded.

"Yes."

A slow realization formed in Aarav's mind.

"This whole thing…"

A pause.

"…was a filter."

She smiled faintly.

"Exactly."

Aarav exhaled slowly.

"Then what about you?"

Her expression didn't change.

"I was sent to observe."

A pause.

"And eliminate you… if necessary."

Silence.

The truth sat heavy between them.

Aarav nodded once.

"Fair."

No anger.

No shock.

Just acceptance.

Because this world didn't allow anything else.

"Then why didn't you?" he asked.

She looked at him.

And for a moment—

Her calm mask cracked slightly.

"Because you're useful."

Aarav smirked.

"Honest."

"Always," she replied.

Another pause.

Then—

"Your turn," she said.

Aarav tilted his head.

"What?"

"If we're forming an alliance…"

A step closer.

"…then I need to know something."

Aarav's eyes narrowed slightly.

"What?"

She held his gaze.

"Would you betray me… to survive?"

Silence.

The question wasn't simple.

Because the answer—

Defined everything.

Aarav thought for a moment.

Then—

"Yes."

No hesitation.

No lies.

Just truth.

For a second—

She stared at him.

Then—

She smiled.

Not offended.

Not surprised.

Satisfied.

"Good," she said.

"Because I would too."

A strange sense of trust formed.

Not built on loyalty.

But honesty.

The strongest kind in a broken world.

Suddenly—

Aarav's earpiece crackled again.

But this time—

The voice wasn't the same.

Deeper.

Colder.

More powerful.

"Interesting."

Aarav froze.

"…who is this?"

The girl's expression changed instantly.

Serious.

Dangerous.

"Don't speak," she whispered.

Too late.

The voice continued—

"Two players… forming an alliance."

A pause.

"That's not part of the rules."

Aarav's chest tightened.

Rules?

"What rules?" he asked.

The girl grabbed his arm.

"Stop talking!"

But the voice laughed softly.

"Let them speak."

Silence.

Then—

"After all…"

A pause.

"It makes the game more entertaining."

Aarav's blood ran cold.

This wasn't just someone watching.

This was someone controlling.

Watching everything.

Listening to everything.

"Who are you?" Aarav demanded.

A pause.

Then—

"You may call me…"

Silence stretched.

Heavy.

Then—

"…The Architect."

The air itself felt like it froze.

The girl stepped back slightly.

Even she—

Was affected.

"That's not good," she whispered.

Aarav frowned.

"Why?"

Her voice dropped—

"Because if he's watching personally…"

A pause.

"It means we've already crossed a line."

Aarav clenched his fists.

"Then let's cross it properly."

The voice laughed again.

Genuinely amused.

"I like you."

A pause.

"Both of you."

Aarav's eyes hardened.

"Then stop playing games and show yourself."

Silence.

Then—

"Not yet."

A pause.

"But since you've chosen to break the rules…"

The air turned heavy again.

Dangerous.

"Let me give you a new one."

Aarav's heartbeat slowed.

Instinct kicking in.

"What rule?"

Silence.

Then—

"From this moment…"

A pause.

"You are no longer players."

Aarav frowned.

"Then what are we?"

The answer came—

Cold.

Final.

"You are targets."

Silence.

Heavy.

Deadly.

The girl stepped closer to Aarav again.

"This just got worse," she said quietly.

Aarav smirked slightly.

"Or more interesting."

She looked at him.

And shook her head.

"You're insane."

Aarav shrugged.

"Probably."

Then he looked at her.

Serious now.

"What's your name?"

A pause.

Then—

"Zoya."

Aarav nodded.

"Aarav."

She smirked slightly.

"I know."

Silence.

Then—

Both of them looked out at the city.

Not as strangers.

Not as allies.

But as something in between.

Something dangerous.

Because now—

They weren't just surviving the game.

They were fighting it.

And somewhere in the shadows—

The Architect was watching.

Smiling.

Waiting.
