Chapter 1 - Chapter One: Dust of Centuries and the Scent of Rain

The scent of ancient paper in the "Lost Haven" library was the only solace for Elara Fusca. Outside the tall windows, framed in decaying wood, the rain lashed the city pavements with ferocity. Inside, however, time seemed to stand still, as if the seconds themselves were afraid to move.

Elara was tracing her ink-stained fingers over the spine of an old leather-bound book when she suddenly felt a sharp, unexpected chill run down her spine. It wasn't the draft of a breeze; it was more like a heavy presence, a weight in the air that seemed to swallow the warmth from the room.

She lifted her head, and there, in the shadowed corner between two shelves of forbidden lore, she saw him.

Valerian Arcadius stood like a statue carved from dark marble. He wasn't dressed in the fashions of the modern world, but in a long coat of midnight velvet that looked as though it had survived a fire in the eighteenth century. His skin was so pale it appeared translucent under the dim glow of the lamps, and his eyes... his eyes weren't just a color, but an abyss of deep gray that told stories of ancient funerals and forgotten wars.

Elara's breath hitched. The pen slipped from her hand, striking the wooden floor with a sound that felt like a gunshot in that absolute silence.

"You draw faces that do not belong to this world, Miss Fusca," he said. His voice was low, resonant, with a strange vibration like the friction of velvet against wood. He didn't move from his spot, yet his voice felt as though it were whispering directly into her ear.

Elara tried to gather her scattered thoughts, but her heart was drumming a rhythm of both terror and curiosity. "How do you know my name? And who are you?"

Valerian took a single step forward, the light retreating from his face to emphasize the sharp, lethal beauty of his features. He offered a faint smile that didn't reach his cold eyes, and for a fleeting second, the tip of a white fang rested against his lower lip before vanishing.

"I am merely a passing shadow in the dream you paint every night," he replied with an eerie calmness. "But take my advice... stop drawing. There are faces that, once their details are perfected on paper, begin to haunt their creator... and I have no wish to be your hunter."
