Chapter 4 - chapter 4

"Stay close."

Her aunt's voice was low, almost blending into the stillness around them.

But there was something sharper underneath it now.

Alert.

Ready.

Sienna didn't question.

She simply followed.

Their footsteps echoed faintly along the corridor.

Each step felt louder than it should have.

Sienna kept her breathing steady, her posture controlled—just as she had been taught.

Observe. Don't react. Don't assume.

But her eyes were already scanning.

Reading the space.

Reading the silence.

Something was wrong.

They turned a corner—

and Sienna stopped.

A man lay slumped against the wall ahead.

Still.

Too still.

Her chest tightened instantly.

Her instincts screamed.

But she forced herself to remain composed.

"What—"

Her voice barely formed.

Her aunt raised a hand.

A silent command.

Stop.

Sienna froze.

Her heartbeat thudded in her ears, but she didn't move.

Didn't speak.

Just watched.

Her aunt stepped forward first.

Calm.

Unhurried.

As if danger itself was just another problem to solve.

She crouched beside the man, her eyes sharp as she examined him.

A few seconds passed.

Then—

"Alive."

Sienna exhaled quietly, her shoulders loosening just slightly.

Alive.

Not dead.

That was… better.

"Ambush," her aunt said, standing again.

Sienna's stomach tightened.

Ambush.

The word settled heavily in her mind.

"Who would do this?" she asked carefully.

Her aunt didn't answer immediately.

Instead, her gaze swept the corridor—

sharp, calculating.

"Many would," she said at last.

A pause.

Then—

footsteps.

Sienna stiffened.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Approaching.

She turned.

Carefully.

Her training kicking in instantly.

From the far end of the corridor—

a figure emerged.

Not rushed.

Not cautious.

Just certain.

Daniel

He stopped a few steps away.

His gaze moved briefly to the injured man—

then to Sienna.

And stayed there.

For a moment—

just a moment—

something shifted in his expression.

Not visible to most.

But Sienna felt it.

"You're late," her aunt said, her voice steady.

Daniel didn't look away.

"I was dealing with the situation."

Sienna observed him carefully.

The tone.

The control.

The lack of explanation.

A situation.

Not an accident.

Not an emotional response.

Just… something that needed to be handled.

"Is it contained?" her aunt asked.

"Not entirely."

Silence fell again.

Sienna's fingers curled slightly at her side.

Not from fear.

But from awareness.

Something was wrong.

And it wasn't just this corridor.

Then—

another presence.

"Then we should fix it."

The voice was smooth.

Almost light.

But beneath it—

danger.

Adrian

He stepped into view like he owned the space.

Relaxed.

Confident.

Watching.

His eyes scanned the scene quickly.

The injured man.

Her aunt.

Daniel.

Then—

Sienna.

They paused on her.

Just for a second longer than necessary.

She felt it.

But she didn't react.

"Interesting," Adrian said quietly, a faint smile forming. "This looks… unplanned."

Daniel's eyes flickered toward him.

"Everything is planned until it isn't."

Sienna watched them closely now.

The shift.

The unspoken tension.

Adrian tilted his head slightly.

"And yet here we are."

The air between them tightened.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

But real.

Sienna's mind worked quickly.

This wasn't just a situation.

This was a conflict.

And she had just walked into it.

Her aunt straightened, her presence cutting through the tension.

"Clear the area."

Daniel nodded once, already turning.

Adrian moved without hesitation, his expression unreadable.

Sienna followed.

But her thoughts didn't.

They lingered on the injured man.

The timing.

The silence.

The fact that both men had arrived so quickly—

almost as if they were expecting something.

Or someone.

As they moved through the corridor, Sienna stayed behind her aunt—

but her eyes drifted once.

Just once.

To the side.

To Daniel.

He wasn't looking at her.

Not directly.

But somehow—

she knew he was aware.

Aware of her.

And for the first time since entering this world—

Sienna realized something unsettling.

This wasn't just training anymore.

This was the beginning of something she couldn't control.

And somewhere ahead…

something was already waiting for her.
