Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 – The Silence No One Notices

The hallway of Hoshikawa High School was as busy as usual, with backpacks bumping into each other, shrill laughter echoing, and the squeaking of shoes against the polished floor. In the middle of that chaos, Yuuto Hoshino walked slowly, his bag slung over one shoulder, his eyes almost always lowered, as if he were invisible. It was almost a skill — no one really noticed his presence, and he liked it that way. He observed. He recorded. He mentally wrote down every gesture, every expression — but he never spoke.

— Hey, Yuuto! — called a sharp, energetic voice.

Yuuto looked up, unsurprised, finding Sakura Aoyama running toward him. Her light pink hair swayed with the motion, and her large eyes sparkled with an enthusiasm that was almost painfully exaggerated.

— Are you going to ignore me again today?

Yuuto let out a soft sigh, almost inaudible, and responded with a simple nod.

— Hmm… A nod? Is that it? — Sakura frowned, tilting her head. — You're so quiet that even your movements speak louder than you do! That's so unfair!

Yuuto simply raised an eyebrow, trying not to smile at the absurd remark.

— I know you write things about all of us in that little notebook of yours — she pointed at his bag, though she didn't try to touch it. — I bet it's full of observations about me, right?

— I don't feel the need to let everyone know what I think — Yuuto replied, his calm and steady voice contrasting with the whirlwind that was Sakura.

— Ah, of course… "I don't feel the need," says the master of silence! — she laughed, walking through the halls with that contagious energy. — But you know what? I'm making it my personal mission to break your shell!

Yuuto remained still, simply watching as she walked away, bouncing and gesturing exaggeratedly. He knew that kind of energy would follow him throughout the day, and that Sakura's "target" was, somehow, him.

When he entered the classroom, Yuuto found Haru Takeda already seated, fiddling with his phone and wearing a goofy smile.

— Ah, Yuuto! — Haru said, almost dropping his pencil from excitement. — Looks like someone's lively today! Sakura? Hahaha, she's going to drive you crazy sooner or later!

— I'd rather go crazy silently — Yuuto murmured, placing his notebook neatly on the desk.

— Ah, you and your silent ways! — Haru laughed, running a hand through his hair. — But I know, I know… you're writing down every word she says, every gesture, every… dramatic exaggeration!

Yuuto simply shrugged.

Sakura entered the classroom like a hurricane, greeting everyone with loud voices, waves, and laughter, stopping abruptly in front of Yuuto.

— So, master of silence… ready to face the day? — she asked, crossing her arms. — Or are you going to keep ignoring me like I'm just background scenery in your life?

— That's not it — Yuuto said, trying to be direct. — I just… observe.

— Observe? — she laughed, tilting her head. — So I'm today's show? What an honor!

Yuuto shrugged again. He didn't understand why she insisted on provoking him. Maybe it was entertainment, maybe curiosity. But somehow, he felt there was something more in that relentless energy, something that couldn't be explained simply as "noise."

The class began, and as always, Yuuto remained silent, focused on the teacher's explanations. Sakura, however, had other ideas: she asked absurd questions, gave wrong answers, and even directed questions at Yuuto, who responded with brief words, causing even more confusion.

— Yuuto! — she called, lowering her voice, but still loud enough for Haru and Ren to hear. — Why do you always answer so little? You're hiding a bunch of secrets, aren't you?

— There are no secrets, just… my thoughts — he replied calmly.

— Thoughts, huh? — she made a dramatic gesture, hitting the desk lightly. — Then I need to uncover every single one of them!

Ren Ishikawa, sitting at the desk next to them, couldn't hold back his laughter.

— Look at that, the circus has arrived — he said with a sarcastic grin. — And the target is the boy who talks less than a fish.

— Very funny — Yuuto muttered without looking at him.

After class, in the school courtyard, Sakura decided she couldn't just let the day pass without creating some kind of chaos. She started following Yuuto, who walked slowly toward the bench behind the school — his "safe" place.

— Hey, do you write everything in that notebook? — Sakura asked, trying to grab it without permission.

— I'd rather keep it with me — Yuuto said, gently moving it away.

— But I just want to see… once! — she pleaded, with that overly dramatic look. — Just to check if you really are observing me!

— Fine… but just look — he said, carefully handing it to her.

Sakura opened the notebook and, to her surprise, found detailed descriptions about her personality, her reactions, and even small habits she hadn't noticed herself. She read in silence for a moment, absorbing every word.

— Wow… — she murmured, finally at a loss for words. — You really do observe me… every detail!

Yuuto tilted his head, waiting for her reaction.

— And I thought you were just… quiet! — she laughed, closing the notebook and handing it back. — But actually, your silence screams about everything!

— Like I always say: silence doesn't mean absence. — Yuuto replied, serious, almost philosophical.

Sakura looked at him with a mix of surprise and admiration. For the first time, Yuuto didn't seem like just "a quiet boy." There was depth there, something she didn't yet know how to deal with — but definitely wanted to explore.

Haru, who had been watching from afar, approached, stumbling slightly.

— Hey, hey… don't tell me you two… are actually getting along now? — he said, laughing, trying to sound casual.

— Not exactly — Sakura replied, crossing her arms, though a small smile slipped through.

— But it's already more interesting than my disastrous predictions — Haru said, awkwardly throwing an arm over Yuuto's shoulders. — Hey, if you need romance advice, I'm here!

Yuuto simply sighed. He didn't need advice — at least not yet. But something about that unexpected interaction stirred something within him. Something about Sakura, her uncontrollable energy, began filling small empty spaces he didn't even know existed.

And so, the first day of "official" interactions began. Yuuto realized that perhaps his silence had never been so loud… and that someone was finally listening to what he didn't say.

Sakura, on the other hand, felt the thrill of a challenge worth pursuing: understanding the boy who spoke less and thought more — the "silence that betrays hearts." She didn't know how, but she was determined not to let Yuuto escape without answers… not her, not him, not anyone.

The bell rang, and the students dispersed, but something lingered in the air: a strange connection, made of glances, teasing, and unspoken words. Yuuto returned to his corner, notebook open, writing silently. Sakura rushed off, already planning her next "incursion" into Yuuto's silent world.

And so began the story of a silence that spoke louder than any word.
