Chapter 23 - when love becomes real

Being in love was one thing.

Staying in love?

That was something else entirely.

For the first time, Amara and Kieran weren't standing on uncertain ground.

There were no more "what ifs."

No more almosts.

They were together.

And somehow…

That felt more terrifying than everything that came before.

It started quietly.

Walks across campus.

Sitting together during lectures.

Late evening conversations that stretched longer than they planned.

Nothing dramatic.

Just… real.

And that was new.

Amara noticed it in the little things.

The way Kieran texted her every morning.

Not out of habit—

But intention.

The way he stayed, even when conversations got uncomfortable.

The way he listened.

Really listened.

It wasn't perfect.

But it was consistent.

And consistency?

That meant everything to her now.

"You look different," Tessa said one afternoon, watching her closely.

Amara smiled slightly.

"Different how?"

"Peaceful."

That word lingered.

Because for the first time…

It felt true.

"I think I am," Amara admitted.

And she meant it.

But peace doesn't mean absence of fear.

Because somewhere deep inside her…

There was still a small voice.

A quiet whisper.

What if it happens again?

She hated that thought.

But she couldn't ignore it either.

Later that evening, she sat with Kieran under the same tree where they used to argue, avoid each other, and pretend nothing existed between them.

Now?

Everything existed.

"You're thinking," Kieran said, watching her.

She exhaled softly.

"I always think."

"Yeah, but this one feels serious."

Amara looked at him.

And for once…

She didn't hide it.

"I'm scared," she admitted.

That wasn't something she said often.

Kieran didn't interrupt.

Didn't joke.

Didn't brush it off.

He just waited.

"Not of you," she added quickly.

"Of what?" he asked quietly.

She hesitated.

"Of losing this."

Silence.

Not heavy.

Just honest.

Kieran leaned back slightly, his gaze steady.

"I can't promise you nothing will ever go wrong," he said.

That wasn't what she expected.

"But I can promise you one thing."

He looked at her fully now.

"I won't run."

Her heart softened instantly.

Because that?

That was what mattered.

Not perfection.

But presence.

"And if things get hard?" she asked.

"They will," he said.

"And?"

Kieran reached for her hand.

"Then we deal with it."

No hesitation.

No doubt.

Just certainty.

Amara looked at their hands.

Then back at him.

And slowly…

She smiled.

Not because everything was guaranteed.

But because for the first time…

She wasn't carrying the fear alone.

"Okay," she said softly.

And that one word?

It meant more than any promise.

Because this time…

They weren't just falling in love.

They were choosing it.

Every single day.
