Chapter 27 - The line that shouldn’t be crossed

After that day…

Zara didn't disappear.

If anything—

She became more present.

Not in an obvious way.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

But intentional.

And Amara noticed.

She saw it in the small things.

Like how Zara would show up where Kieran was.

Not always close.

But never far.

Like how she greeted him a little too comfortably.

Like she still belonged somewhere in his space.

And the worst part?

Kieran didn't always notice.

Or maybe…

He didn't realize how it looked.

"You're overthinking," Tessa said one afternoon.

Amara shook her head slightly.

"No. I'm observing."

There was a difference.

Because this time…

She wasn't jumping to conclusions.

She was paying attention.

Later that day, she saw it again.

Kieran standing near the faculty building.

Zara beside him.

Talking.

But this time…

It didn't look casual.

It looked familiar.

Too familiar.

Amara stopped walking.

Her chest tightened slightly.

Not out of panic.

But disappointment.

Because after everything they talked about…

This?

It didn't feel right.

She turned to leave.

But before she could—

"Amara!"

Kieran's voice.

She paused.

Slowly turning around.

He walked toward her quickly.

Zara stayed behind.

Watching.

"I was just about to come find you," he said.

Amara nodded.

"I can see that."

Her tone was calm.

Too calm.

Kieran frowned slightly.

"What's wrong?"

She looked at him.

Then past him.

To Zara.

And back again.

"You tell me."

Silence.

Kieran followed her gaze.

Then exhaled.

"It's not what you think."

That line again.

Amara almost smiled.

Not because it was funny.

But because it was predictable.

"Then what is it?" she asked.

Kieran hesitated.

"She just wanted to talk."

"About what?"

He paused again.

And that pause?

That was enough.

Amara nodded slowly.

"Exactly."

"Amara—"

"No," she said softly.

Not angry.

Not loud.

Just… firm.

"This is what I meant."

Kieran's expression shifted.

"What do you mean?"

"I told you I don't want to find out things," she said.

"And right now?"

She looked at him directly.

"I feel like I am."

That hit.

Hard.

Because this time…

He couldn't deny it.

"It's not serious," he said quickly.

"That's not the point," she replied.

Silence.

Because now…

It wasn't about Zara.

It was about trust.

"You're letting her get comfortable again," Amara continued.

"And that crosses a line for me."

Kieran stepped closer.

"I didn't realize—"

"That's the problem," she said.

Her voice wasn't harsh.

But it carried weight.

"You should realize."

That truth landed deeply.

Because she wasn't asking for perfection.

She was asking for awareness.

Respect.

And right now…

It didn't feel like she had it.

Kieran ran a hand through his hair.

"I'll fix it."

Amara shook her head slightly.

"This isn't something you fix after."

"It's something you prevent."

Silence.

That line stayed between them.

Clear.

Unavoidable.

"I meant what I said," she added.

"I need to feel secure in this."

Kieran looked at her.

And for the first time since all this started…

He saw it.

Not fear.

But distance.

Like she was already preparing to step back.

"I'm not going anywhere," he said.

But this time…

It didn't land the same.

Because words?

They weren't enough anymore.

Amara took a small step back.

"I'm not asking you to say it," she said quietly.

"I'm asking you to show it."

And with that—

She turned.

And walked away.

Not because she didn't care.

But because she cared enough…

To protect herself.

And for the first time since they got back together—

Kieran felt it again.

That fear.

Not of losing her someday.

But of losing her now.
