Chapter 14 - Episode 14: Not Everyone Who Helps Is Safe

The safe house was quiet.

Too quiet.

Not peaceful quiet…

but watched quiet.

Meera couldn't sleep.

Neither could Rani.

They sat on opposite sides of a small room, pretending to rest.

But both were thinking the same thing.

What if this is another trap?

Morning came with routine instructions.

No phones.

No social media.

No real names outside trusted rooms.

"Here, you are only survivors," the coordinator said.

Not people.

Not identities.

Just survivors.

Rani whispered:

"This feels like hiding again."

Meera replied softly:

"At least we're not running."

But even she didn't sound fully convinced.

That afternoon, Meera noticed something strange.

A girl in the corner kept staring at them.

Not curiosity.

Recognition.

Meera leaned slightly toward Rani.

"Do you see her?"

Rani nodded.

"Yes."

The girl stood up slowly.

Walked toward them.

Step by step.

Meera's heart tightened.

Because recognition inside places like this…

is never random.

The girl stopped in front of them.

And said softly:

"You shouldn't be here."

Silence.

Rani immediately stepped forward.

"Why?"

The girl looked around first.

Then lowered her voice:

"Because someone already asked about you."

Meera's breath stopped.

"Who?"

The girl hesitated.

Then said:

"Your father."

The room tilted for a second.

Meera felt her stomach drop.

Rani's voice sharpened:

"He found this place?"

The girl shook her head quickly.

"No… not exactly."

A pause.

"But someone here… gave your details."

Silence.

The word betrayal doesn't always arrive loudly.

Sometimes it arrives softly.

Like that.

Meera stepped back slightly.

"No…"

Rani looked around the room slowly.

"So someone inside this safe house… is leaking information."

The girl nodded.

"Yes."

A heavy silence followed.

The safe house suddenly didn't feel safe anymore.

That evening, everything changed.

The coordinator called everyone for a meeting.

Emergency tone.

Strict voice.

"There has been a breach," he announced.

Whispers filled the room instantly.

Meera and Rani stood still.

Watching.

Listening.

Then the coordinator continued:

"External parties have been asking for specific individuals."

Pause.

"Names were leaked."

Meera felt it before he even said it.

"Meera Verma."

Her name echoed in the room.

Not softly.

Not privately.

Publicly.

Rani grabbed her hand immediately.

Meera whispered:

"So it's here too…"

The coordinator continued:

"We will investigate the source. Until then… no one leaves the premises alone."

But Meera already understood something deeper.

If someone had already leaked her name…

it meant they were already close.

That night, Rani locked the door.

Checked it twice.

Then three times.

Meera sat on the bed.

Silent.

Thinking.

"This place was supposed to protect us," she said softly.

Rani replied:

"It still can."

A pause.

"If we find who's betraying us."

Meera looked up.

"And if we don't?"

Rani didn't answer immediately.

Then said:

"Then we were never safe anywhere."

Silence.

Outside the window…

a car slowly passed the building.

Too slow.

Too intentional.

Meera noticed it.

Rani noticed it too.

They didn't speak.

But both understood the same truth.

This wasn't just protection anymore.

It was infiltration.

Somewhere inside the safe house…

someone had already chosen a side.

And it wasn't theirs.

Meera whispered:

"They're closer than we thought."

Rani nodded.

"Then we get ready."

Meera looked at her.

"For what?"

Rani answered quietly:

"For when hiding stops working."

And for the first time since they arrived…

the safe house didn't feel like an escape.

It felt like a countdown.
