The sky shattered.
Not into darkness.
Into fragments of forgotten moments.
Zayden watched pieces of history drift through the air.
A child taking their first step.
An old man smiling at the sunrise.
A city celebrating peace.
Then...
Each memory was swallowed by the enormous shadow descending from above.
The Chronophage had arrived.
Its body was impossible to describe.
It had no face.
No wings.
No limbs.
It looked like a tear in reality itself, wrapped in countless golden clocks that spun in every direction.
Where it passed...
Time simply disappeared.
The leader of the Time Hunters lowered to one knee.
For the first time...
They bowed.
> "The Devourer awakens."
Aster's voice was barely a whisper.
"It wasn't supposed to find this place."
The Keeper looked up.
"It followed the fracture."
The Null King clenched his fists.
"No."
"It followed the future."
---
The Chronophage paused above the city.
The golden hourglass beneath it shattered into millions of glowing grains.
Every grain became another broken memory.
Zayden suddenly couldn't remember Captain Lyra's first meeting.
He blinked.
The memory returned.
Then vanished again.
Aria grabbed his arm.
"What's wrong?"
"I..."
He hesitated.
"I forgot."
Aster's expression darkened.
"It doesn't consume people."
"It consumes the time they lived."
Elysia gasped.
"If it keeps feeding..."
"There won't be a past left to remember."
---
The Chronophage let out a silent pulse.
A wave spread across the city.
One of the ancient towers disappeared.
Not destroyed.
As if it had never existed.
The stone beneath their feet trembled.
The Time Hunters stood.
The leader spoke.
> "This is why the City of Tomorrow must vanish."
> "The Chronophage follows impossible futures."
Zayden stared at the creature.
"So it came because Elias changed history."
Elias shook his head.
"No."
"It came because..."
He looked directly at the First Seed resting inside Zayden's coat.
"...a universe was born outside the old cycle."
Silence.
The First Seed glowed softly.
As if it understood.
---
Without warning...
The Chronophage reached toward the group.
Not with claws.
But with a ripple in time.
The world froze.
Only four people remained able to move.
Zayden.
Aria.
The Keeper.
The Null King.
The others stood motionless.
Trapped between seconds.
The Chronophage drifted closer.
Aster, frozen in place, could only watch.
The Keeper stepped in front of everyone.
Silver light erupted from his hands.
The Chronophage passed through it effortlessly.
The Null King unleashed a wave of Null.
The creature ignored it.
Neither creation...
Nor erasure...
Could touch it.
"It exists beyond both," the Keeper realized.
Zayden looked at the glowing key.
"If power can't stop it..."
Aria finished the thought.
"...then maybe power isn't the answer."
She stepped forward.
The Chronophage halted.
Everyone stared.
Aria slowly reached into her pocket.
She removed the silver pendant Zayden had carried since entering the Final Layer.
She held it toward the creature.
"I don't know what you are."
Her voice remained calm.
"But if you devour time..."
She smiled gently.
"...then take one of my memories instead."
The Keeper's eyes widened.
"Aria, don't!"
The pendant glowed.
A single memory floated from it.
It was simple.
Zayden and Aria sitting beneath the silver tree during the lantern festival.
Laughing.
Peaceful.
The Chronophage watched the memory.
It didn't consume it.
Instead...
It slowed.
The golden clocks surrounding its body stopped turning.
For the first time...
The creature seemed curious.
The silent pulse faded.
Time began to move again.
Captain Lyra stumbled forward.
"What happened?"
No one answered.
Because they didn't know.
The Chronophage had ignored every attack.
Yet...
It had paused for a memory freely offered.
Aster smiled faintly.
"Interesting..."
He looked at Zayden.
"The oldest forces in existence may not understand strength."
He looked at Aria.
"But they still recognize sincerity."
The Chronophage slowly retreated into the fractured sky.
Not defeated.
Not victorious.
Watching.
Learning.
Before disappearing, a single golden feather drifted from its form.
It landed in Aria's hands.
Carved into its surface were five words.
> "Every memory shapes eternity."
The feather dissolved into warm light.
The city stopped collapsing.
For now.
But everyone understood the truth.
The Chronophage would return.
And next time...
It wouldn't come just to observe.
