Morning should have arrived.
It didn't.
The City of Tomorrow stood beneath a sky caught between dawn and night, as though time itself couldn't decide which direction to move.
The Chronophage was gone.
But it had left something behind.
Silence.
An unnatural silence.
Captain Lyra frowned.
"Where did everyone go?"
The streets that had been filled with echoes now stood completely empty.
Even the wind had disappeared.
Zayden looked down.
The footprints they had left only moments ago...
Were fading.
Not washed away.
Forgotten.
---
Aster knelt and touched the marble road.
His fingers passed through it for a brief second.
"This city is becoming a memory."
Aria looked around.
"What does that mean?"
"It means..."
Aster stood slowly.
"...the City of Tomorrow is being erased from history."
The Keeper's expression hardened.
"If that happens..."
"No one will remember it ever existed."
Elias nodded.
"Exactly."
"The letter."
"The Memory Prism."
"Even me."
"They'll all disappear."
---
A sharp pain struck Zayden's head.
He staggered.
Fragments of memory flashed before his eyes.
A child handing him a white flower.
The lantern festival.
The Council's first meeting.
Then...
Blankness.
Aria caught him before he fell.
"Zayden!"
"I'm okay..."
He wasn't.
He could feel pieces of his past slipping away like sand through his fingers.
---
The Memory Prism suddenly floated from his coat.
Silver threads spread through the air.
One thread wrapped itself around Zayden's wrist.
Another around Aria's.
A third reached the Keeper.
Then the Null King.
Finally...
Elias.
The crystal began to pulse.
A quiet voice echoed from within.
> "Memory survives when it is shared."
The five silver threads glowed brighter.
The memories trying to disappear...
Stopped fading.
Captain Lyra watched in amazement.
"The Prism is protecting them."
Aster smiled.
"No."
"It isn't protecting memories."
"It's connecting them."
---
The ground trembled.
At the far end of the city, an ancient clock tower began to ring.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
The sound echoed through streets that no longer seemed entirely real.
Elias looked toward it.
"I've never heard those bells before."
The Keeper narrowed his eyes.
"They weren't there yesterday."
A door slowly opened at the base of the tower.
Warm golden light spilled onto the empty street.
Aria whispered,
"Should we go inside?"
Zayden looked at the glowing threads around their wrists.
"I think..."
He smiled faintly.
"...we're being invited."
---
They entered together.
The tower was impossibly larger inside.
Bookshelves climbed endlessly toward a ceiling hidden by clouds.
Thousands upon thousands of books rested on the shelves.
None had titles.
Aster stopped walking.
His voice barely rose above a whisper.
"The Library of Lives..."
The Keeper looked equally stunned.
"I thought it was only a myth."
An elderly librarian appeared between the shelves.
She wore simple gray robes and round glasses perched on the end of her nose.
She smiled warmly.
"I was beginning to think no one would visit."
She looked directly at Zayden.
"You must be the Free Anchor."
He nodded.
"And you are?"
She closed the book in her hands.
"I keep every story that has ever been lived."
"My name..."
She bowed slightly.
"...is Miriam."
Aria glanced around at the endless shelves.
"So these books..."
Miriam nodded.
"Each one is a life."
"A choice."
"A memory."
She looked toward a shelf in the distance.
One space stood empty.
Its label read:
ZAYDEN CROSS
The book...
Was missing.
Zayden frowned.
"Where is it?"
Miriam's gentle smile disappeared.
"That's why I asked you here."
She took a slow breath.
Then said the words that chilled the entire library.
> "Someone has stolen your future."
The lights overhead flickered.
And somewhere deep within the endless shelves...
A book slammed shut on its own.
