The sound echoed through the endless library.
Bang.
A single book had closed on its own.
Then another.
Bang.
Another shelf.
Another aisle.
One by one, books throughout the Library of Lives began shutting themselves.
Miriam's expression turned grave.
"They've entered."
Captain Lyra instinctively reached for her spear.
"Who?"
Miriam didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she looked at the empty space where Zayden's book should have been.
"The Book Thieves."
Silence.
Aria frowned.
"Someone steals... lives?"
"No."
Miriam corrected gently.
"They steal what those lives could become."
---
The Keeper walked toward the empty shelf.
"Who would dare enter this place?"
Miriam sighed.
"They have no choice."
"The Book Thieves were once Historians."
"They preserved every story."
"But after the first cycle collapsed..."
"They became obsessed with certainty."
The Null King looked thoughtful.
"They believe the future should already be written."
Miriam nodded.
"And anything unpredictable..."
"...must be removed."
---
Without warning...
A page drifted from the ceiling.
It landed at Zayden's feet.
The words appeared one by one.
> Chapter One
Then...
Nothing.
The rest of the page was blank.
Miriam smiled sadly.
"That's your future."
"It hasn't been written."
"So they stole it before it could be."
---
A deep rumble shook the library.
Books flew from shelves.
Golden dust filled the air.
The silver threads connecting the Memory Prism tightened around everyone's wrists.
A hidden door slid open between two towering bookcases.
Darkness waited beyond.
From within came quiet footsteps.
One.
Two.
Three.
A tall woman emerged first.
She wore a long crimson coat stitched with pages instead of fabric.
A porcelain mask covered the upper half of her face.
Behind her followed two silent figures carrying enormous black books chained to their backs.
She stopped a few steps away.
Then bowed politely.
"Good evening."
Her voice was calm.
Elegant.
Almost kind.
Miriam's face hardened.
"Cassandra."
The masked woman smiled.
"It's been too long, Librarian."
---
Zayden stepped forward.
"You stole my future."
"I borrowed it."
"You erased it."
"I protected it."
Her answer was so calm that it made Aria uneasy.
Cassandra looked directly at Zayden.
"The future belongs to possibility."
"And possibility..."
She gently tapped one of the black books.
"...is dangerous."
The Null King folded his arms.
"You sound familiar."
She laughed softly.
"I've heard that before."
---
Miriam raised her hand.
"This library forbids violence."
The shelves glowed.
Thousands of books opened at once.
Golden light filled the room.
Cassandra inclined her head respectfully.
"I have no intention of fighting."
She reached into her coat.
Everyone tensed.
Instead of a weapon...
She produced a small silver notebook.
She placed it gently on the floor.
"This belongs to you."
Zayden picked it up.
It was old.
Worn.
On the cover, in faded ink, were the words:
The Unwritten Tomorrow
He opened it.
Every page was blank.
Except the last.
Only one sentence had been written.
> "When your story reaches its end, choose the door that remains closed."
The message disappeared as soon as he finished reading.
The notebook became blank again.
---
Cassandra stepped backward toward the darkness.
"The future isn't being stolen, Free Anchor."
She looked at him one last time.
"It's hiding."
"From someone far more dangerous than us."
The Keeper's expression changed.
"You've seen them."
For the first time...
Cassandra's smile vanished.
"Yes."
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
"And I hope you never do."
The lights in the library flickered.
She and the two silent figures dissolved into countless floating pages.
Gone.
Only silence remained.
Miriam closed her eyes.
"She came here to warn us."
Aster nodded slowly.
"Which means..."
"If Cassandra is afraid..."
He looked toward the endless shelves.
"...then something unimaginable is already moving."
Far away, in the deepest corner of the Library of Lives...
A single book opened by itself.
No one noticed.
Its title slowly appeared in silver letters.
The End of All Stories
The first page turned.
On it...
Only one word was written.
Soon.
