The library grew unnaturally still.
Not even the turning of pages could be heard.
Miriam walked toward the deepest aisle, her footsteps echoing across the polished floor.
Zayden, Aria, the Keeper, the Null King, Aster, Lyra, Elysia, and Elias followed.
The shelves became older.
Dust covered books that looked as though they had existed since before the first Layer.
Finally...
They reached a massive iron door.
Across it, carved into silver stone, were six ancient words:
THE ARCHIVE OF UNFINISHED ENDINGS
Captain Lyra frowned.
"I've never heard of this place."
"No one has," Miriam replied.
"Because no one was ever meant to."
She placed her hand on the door.
It didn't open.
Instead...
A single keyhole appeared.
The silver key floating beside Zayden began to glow.
The Keeper looked at him.
"It wants you."
Zayden stepped forward.
The key slid into the lock by itself.
A soft click echoed.
The iron doors slowly opened.
---
Beyond them...
There was no room.
Only an endless sea of floating books.
Millions of them.
Some glowed brightly.
Others had faded to gray.
Each one carried the title of a story.
A life.
A civilization.
A world.
Aria gazed in wonder.
"So many..."
Miriam smiled sadly.
"And every one of them matters."
As they walked deeper, Zayden noticed something strange.
Some books had no endings.
Their final pages were blank.
"Why aren't they finished?"
Miriam answered,
"Because hope still exists."
The words lingered in the silence.
---
A loud crack echoed overhead.
One book suddenly burst into black flames.
Then another.
Then another.
The fire spread without heat.
Without smoke.
Wherever it touched...
Words vanished from the pages.
Aster's expression darkened.
"The End is here."
"The End?" Aria asked.
Miriam looked toward the growing darkness.
"There are beings who erase worlds."
"There are beings who erase time."
She took a slow breath.
"But there is only one..."
"...who erases stories."
The flames gathered together.
A figure stepped from them.
Tall.
Dressed in a coat woven from black paper.
Its face hidden beneath a hood.
Instead of eyes...
There were two blank pages.
It carried an enormous fountain pen carved from obsidian.
The being looked around the Archive.
Then spoke in a quiet, almost gentle voice.
> "Stories eventually become memories."
> "Memories eventually become silence."
It turned its blank gaze toward Zayden.
> "Why delay the inevitable?"
The silver key floated protectively in front of him.
"I don't know who you are."
The figure inclined its head.
"I have been called many names."
"The Last Author."
"The Final Editor."
"The Quiet Ending."
A pause.
"But names are only titles."
"I am..."
The obsidian pen touched the air.
A single black line appeared across reality.
> "...the One Who Closes Books."
Silence swept through the Archive.
The being reached toward a nearby shelf.
A glowing book floated into its hand.
Miriam gasped.
"No!"
The being calmly wrote one word on the final page.
End.
The book closed.
Instantly...
A distant star in the endless sea outside the library went dark.
Everyone felt it.
Somewhere...
A civilization had just disappeared.
Not with screams.
Not with war.
Its story had simply...
Ended.
The Keeper's voice trembled.
"It wrote reality."
Aster nodded.
"The oldest law of creation."
The hooded figure looked back at Zayden.
"You've built a future filled with endless possibilities."
It gently closed the book in its hands.
"I offer something kinder."
"No uncertainty."
"No suffering."
"No unfinished endings."
Aria stepped beside Zayden.
"And no life."
The figure remained silent.
Then...
For the first time...
It smiled.
Though it had no face.
> "Exactly."
The obsidian pen rose once more.
This time...
Its tip pointed toward the empty space where ZAYDEN CROSS should have been.
