The first clash between Lucien and Esdeath had barely finished ringing through the private viewing chamber. Neither warrior retreated; their blades remained locked.
Lucien's twin ancient swords, one warm bronze, the other dark silver etched with golden markings, crossed against Esdeath's rapier. The difference in their weapons was immediately apparent. His blades were broad enough to carry real weight, forged in an era when swords were made to survive battlefields rather than ceremonial halls. Esdeath's rapier was the opposite: long, narrow, precise. Its point rested against the space between Lucien's crossed swords, the weapon vibrating faintly from the force of their collision.
Cold mist curled from her blade.
Lucien's eyes narrowed.
Esdeath smiled.
Neither moved.
Then Lucien twisted his wrists. The ancient swords separated. Esdeath's rapier slipped between them. Lucien stepped sideways, allowing the point to pass his shoulder by inches. The rapier continued forward. Esdeath immediately reversed her grip and swept the weapon back toward his ribs.
Lucien brought the sword in his right hand down.
CLANG!
Steel struck steel. The force pushed Esdeath backward. She slid across the floor, boots stopping without leaving a mark. Her smile widened.
"Better."
Lucien lowered one blade, but kept his guard up. "You're testing me?"
"Of course." Esdeath rolled her shoulders. "I want to know what you're capable of before you start using the dangerous abilities."
Lucien's expression sharpened. "You're assuming I have dangerous abilities."
Esdeath laughed, the sound low and genuine. "I can feel the destruction inside you. I can also sense something more ancient… and it's hungry."
Lucien's fingers tightened around his swords. The Power of Destruction stirred not wildly, not like it had during his earlier training. This time he felt it differently. A vast pressure waited beneath his magic, an erosion that wanted to spread. He had once treated it like a blunt weapon. Sirzechs had taught him otherwise.
Destruction wasn't merely something he released.
It was something he had to contain. Control. Shape. Direct.
Lucien inhaled slowly. The pressure settled, folding back into a tight, coiled readiness.
Esdeath noticed. Her smile became sharper. "You controlled it."
"A little."
"Interesting." She raised her rapier. "Again."
She vanished.
Lucien's eyes widened. Esdeath appeared directly in front of him, rapier thrusting forward with surgical precision. He caught the blade between his swords. The impact sent a metallic shriek through the chamber, making the protective wards flicker. Esdeath twisted. Lucien's right sword followed the movement. Their weapons separated. Esdeath stepped inside his guard, her knee driving toward his center. Lucien pivoted hard. The strike passed beside him. He brought his left sword downward. Esdeath raised her rapier.
CLANG!
She took the blow head-on. For an instant their faces were only inches apart. Esdeath's eyes burned with excitement. The cold mist from her blade mixed with the faint heat rising from Lucien's skin.
Lucien smiled. "You enjoy this."
"Immensely." She pushed against his blade. "Don't you?"
Lucien's smile widened. "I'm starting to."
Esdeath's grin became predatory. "Good, that's what I like to hear."
She kicked away. Lucien's boots scraped across the floor. Esdeath immediately followed. Her rapier became a silver blur: thrust, thrust, thrust. Lucien parried each attack. The chamber filled with the ringing of steel and the sharp scent of ozone from clashing magic.
CLANG!! CLANG!! CLANG!!
His ancient swords moved independently. One intercepted her thrust. The other searched for an opening. Esdeath's movements were unlike those of any opponent he had faced. She didn't try to overpower his defense. She tested it. Every thrust forced Lucien to reveal another part of his swordsmanship. His right blade favored wider defensive movements. His left was more aggressive. His stance was still developing.
Esdeath noticed everything.
"You favor your right hand."
Lucien blocked another thrust. "Do I?"
"Yes." Her rapier slid along the length of his blade. "Your left hand is protecting your blind side."
Lucien's eyes narrowed. Esdeath suddenly changed direction. Her rapier snapped toward his left shoulder. Lucien's second sword intercepted it.
Esdeath smiled. "There."
Lucien stepped forward. His right sword swept toward her in a heavy arc. Esdeath leaned backward with effortless grace. The blade passed before her uniform, close enough that the wind of its passage stirred her blue hair. She spun away.
"You're learning."
"So are you."
"That's the point."
Esdeath raised her hand. A pale blue glow spread across her fingers. The temperature in the chamber dropped sharply. Frost crawled across the floor in delicate, crystalline patterns. Lucien's breath became visible in the sudden cold.
"Let's add magic."
Ice erupted; a dozen crystalline spears formed behind Esdeath, each one gleaming with deadly intent. With a flick of her wrist, they launched, whistling through the air.
Lucien moved. The first spear struck the floor and shattered into glittering shards. The second passed his shoulder close enough to leave a thin line of frost on his coat. The third shattered against his sword. The remaining projectiles curved mid-flight, tracking him.
Lucien's eyes sharpened. "Tracking?"
Esdeath smiled. "Among other things."
Lucien raised his free hand. A magic circle appeared with crimson lines rotating around a dark center. The first ice spear struck it. Instead of exploding, the projectile stopped. Lucien twisted his fingers. The magic circle rotated. The spear's trajectory changed. It shot sideways and destroyed another incoming projectile. The remaining ice spears shattered against the barrier.
Esdeath watched with interest. "Magic circles."
Lucien lowered his hand. "Among other things."
Esdeath's smile widened. "You're cheeky."
"I've been told."
She raised her hand again. The floor erupted. A wall of ice surged toward him, thick and opaque, the cold biting into his skin even from several meters away. Lucien didn't retreat. He formed another magic circle directly beneath his feet. The circle rotated with a soft hum. His body vanished. He reappeared several meters away, boots sliding slightly on the frost-slick floor.
Esdeath's eyes narrowed. "Teleportation?"
"Not quite." Lucien's answer came immediately. "Spatial magic is still theoretical for me."
Esdeath looked delighted. "So you're moving through prepared magic?"
Lucien nodded. "Short distances."
"Useful."
Her fingers curled. Ice formed around her in swirling patterns. A massive armored creature emerged from the frozen mist. A charging beast forged entirely from ice, its form vaguely wolf-like but twisted and reinforced with jagged crystalline plates. It roared without a voice, the sound a low vibration that rattled the air, then charged.
Lucien raised both swords. The creature crashed into him.
BOOM!
The impact pushed him backward. His boots dug deep grooves into the floor. Ice spread across his arms, biting cold that threatened to lock his joints. Lucien gritted his teeth. He twisted one sword, carving through the creature's chest. The second followed in a heavy downward slash. The construct shattered. Shards of ice burst across the chamber, some hissing into steam against the residual heat of his magic while others skittered across the floor like splintered glass.
Lucien stepped through the falling crystals. Esdeath was already waiting. Her rapier flashed. Lucien parried. She thrust again. He blocked. Esdeath spun and launched a counterattack. He ducked and charged in with a counter of his own. Their movements became faster, more fluid, more dangerous.
Neither was trying to finish the fight.
Not yet.
They were learning. Measuring. Searching, testing the boundaries of the other.
Outside the chamber, the viewing area had become considerably quieter.
Grayfia watched through the reinforced magical glass, her silver eyes sharp and assessing. Albedo stood beside Kuroka and Erza, arms crossed, golden eyes narrowed. Venelana had stopped reaching for the pastries. Grayroad leaned forward, heterochromatic eyes following every movement with quiet intensity.
"Remarkable," Grayroad murmured.
Kuroka's ears twitched. "Nya?"
Grayroad smiled. "The young master isn't fighting merely to win."
Erza watched Lucien's footwork. "He is studying her."
Grayfia nodded. "So is Esdeath."
Albedo crossed her arms. "They're both enjoying themselves."
Kuroka grinned. "Nya." She glanced toward Erza. "They look like they're having fun."
Erza's crimson tail flicked. "That is concerning."
Grayroad chuckled. "Quite." He took another sip of tea. "I believe we've discovered something important."
Grayfia glanced at him. "What?"
Grayroad's smile widened. "The young master and the Glasya-Labolas heiress are both battle junkies."
Venelana finally picked up a pastry. "That sounds like trouble."
"Precisely."
Inside the chamber, Lucien exhaled. His grip tightened. The Power of Destruction stirred again. This time he reached for it deliberately. Dark crimson energy crawled across his right sword, the ancient bronze blade beginning to hum with restrained power. The air around it seemed to thin, as if reality itself was being carefully eroded.
Esdeath's expression changed. "There it is."
Lucien raised the weapon. "This time…" The destructive aura compressed. Instead of expanding outward in an uncontrolled wave, it wrapped tightly around the blade like a second edge. "…I'm going to control it."
Esdeath's eyes gleamed. "Show me."
Lucien moved. His sword struck. Esdeath blocked. The moment their weapons touched, her eyes widened. The destructive energy didn't explode. It didn't spread. It simply ate away at the outer layer of the ice coating her rapier, dissolving it into nothing with terrifying precision.
Esdeath jumped backward. A small section of frost disappeared from her weapon. She looked at it, then laughed, genuine, delighted.
"Excellent."
Lucien lowered the sword. Sirzechs' lessons echoed through his mind.
Destruction doesn't need to be large. It only needs to reach what you intend to erase.
Lucien looked at his blade. For the first time, he understood the lesson. The Power of Destruction wasn't a flood. It was a scalpel, a terrifying one.
Esdeath raised her hand. "I'll answer in kind."
The temperature plummeted. Ice exploded outward. The chamber's protective formations activated with a low, strained hum. Blue-white frost covered the walls. Esdeath's magic surged around her body. Ice armor formed across her shoulders and arms, crystalline and gleaming. A crown of frozen crystal appeared above her head, sharp and regal.
Lucien's eyes widened. "You're increasing the output."
"Of course." Esdeath smiled. "You finally gave me something worth answering."
She thrust her hand forward. The entire floor froze. Lucien jumped. Ice spears erupted beneath him. He twisted in midair. A magic circle appeared. He redirected himself. Another appeared. Then another. Lucien bounced between his own formations, using them as temporary platforms, each landing sending small cracks through the ice.
Esdeath watched. Then she smiled. "You can do better."
Lucien's eyes narrowed. He landed. His shadow spread beneath his feet.
Esdeath charged. The two collided again. This time the impact was different. Lucien's twin blades moved with renewed confidence. His right sword carried destruction. His left sword remained free, ready. Esdeath's rapier struck between them. Lucien caught it. He twisted. Esdeath rotated with the movement. Her free hand touched the flat of his blade. Ice exploded. Lucien was forced backward. He raised a magic circle. The blast struck the formation. The circle cracked under the force.
Lucien's eyes widened. Esdeath was already behind him. Her rapier stopped at his back, the point resting lightly against his coat.
"Check."
Lucien looked over his shoulder. Then smiled. "Not quite."
His shadow moved. Esdeath's eyes widened. A second Lucien emerged from the shadow several feet away, a perfect projection of darkness and form. The first vanished.
Esdeath laughed. "A decoy."
"A shadow projection."
"Better."
She turned. Lucien attacked. Their swords collided again.
CLANG!
The sound echoed through the chamber. Esdeath blocked his right sword. His left swept toward her. She bent backward. The blade passed over her. She retaliated with a thrust. Lucien deflected it. He stepped forward. She stepped back. Neither gave ground willingly.
Their battle had stopped resembling a formal duel. It was becoming a conversation. Every strike was a question. Every parry was an answer. Every spell revealed another sentence.
Lucien felt something he hadn't experienced during training. Not fear. Not pressure.
Excitement.
His heart raced. His muscles burned. His magic reserves were beginning to drain. And yet he wanted to continue. He wanted to push further. He wanted to see how far this could go.
Esdeath saw it. She smiled. "There."
Lucien's brow furrowed. "What?"
"That expression." She parried his blade. "You finally look alive."
Lucien's eyes sharpened. Esdeath drove him backward with a series of precise thrusts. "Power isn't enough." Another thrust. "Technique isn't enough." Another. "Control isn't enough." Lucien blocked. Esdeath's rapier slid against his blade with a sharp metallic scrape. "You need the desire to use all three."
Lucien suddenly stopped retreating. His shadow erupted around him, darker and more restless than before. The Power of Destruction surged in answer. Esdeath's smile widened with pure anticipation.
Lucien crossed his twin blades. "Then let's see what happens when I stop holding back."
The chamber shook. The protective formations ignited. Outside, Grayfia stood. Her silver eyes widened. Grayroad slowly lowered his teacup. Venelana stared. Kuroka's ears stood straight up. Erza's crimson tail froze. Albedo's eyes narrowed.
Inside the chamber, Esdeath looked at Lucien. For several seconds, neither moved.
Then Esdeath laughed, not politely, not softly, but with genuine delight.
"Yes. More! Give me your best shot."
Ice exploded around her in a storm of crystalline spears and freezing mist. Lucien's destruction flared in answer, purple-black energy meeting blue-white frost. The two forces collided. The chamber vanished beneath a storm of black energy and frozen magic. The protective barriers screamed under the pressure, runes flashing desperately.
Lucien emerged first from the chaos. His coat was torn in several places. Frost clung to his shoulders and hair. One of his ancient swords dripped with melting ice. He breathed heavily, chest rising and falling.
Across from him, Esdeath stood with one hand resting on her rapier. Several strands of blue hair had escaped their usual arrangement. Her uniform had finally suffered its first tear along one sleeve.
And she was smiling wide, fierce, alive.
Lucien raised his blades. Esdeath slowly lifted her rapier. The temperature dropped again. Lucien's shadow spread across the floor, darker and hungrier than before. Neither moved.
Then Esdeath tilted her head. Her eyes gleamed with pure warrior anticipation.
"Is that all you've got?"
Lucien's grin returned, sharp, reckless, and for the first time since the night the System had fully awakened, completely free of restraint.
Shadows erupted around him in a living tide.
"Shadows of Reckoning."
