Esdeath stared him down. "Darling, is that all you've got?"
For a moment, it was as if the arena froze.
The words hung between them in the silent air.
Then he smiled.
Not the controlled smile he wore during meetings.
Not the polite expression expected of a noble heir.
Something sharper.
Something almost feral.
"No."
His shadow moved.
The darkness beneath his feet expanded, then erupted
The arena was swallowed by living darkness the moment Lucien called the technique.
Shadows of Reckoning erupted outward in a tide of pure black. The temperature plunged. Oppressive pressure rolled across the chamber like a living weight, and the residual frost from Esdeath's earlier attacks cracked under the sudden force. The air filled with the sharp scent of ozone, ancient cold, and something hungrier. Something that felt older than the Underworld itself.
Esdeath's eyes widened for a single heartbeat.
For the first time since their duel began, genuine surprise crossed her face.
Then it vanished.
A grin spread across her lips.
"There you are."
Her fingers tightened around her rapier.
The shadows bent more readily to Lucien's will than they ever had in training. They moved when he moved. They gathered when he commanded. But beneath their obedience, he felt something else: resistance. A subtle pressure against his will. The darkness wanted to spread. It wanted to consume. It wanted more.
Lucien's jaw tightened.
Not yet.
The shadows responded. Barely. But they responded.
Esdeath noticed the hesitation and attacked.
Her rapier flashed through the darkness. Lucien raised his twin swords.
CLANG!
The shadows bent toward Lucien.
Sparks cut through the blackened arena. Esdeath twisted. Lucien parried. She thrust again. He stepped aside. A shadow tendril erupted beneath her feet. She jumped. The tendril snapped upward like the jaws of an enormous creature. Esdeath landed on an ice platform. Lucien's shadows immediately climbed it. Blackness crawled across the frozen surface. The ice cracked.
Esdeath's eyes gleamed. "So that's what you can do."
The platform shattered. She fell. Lucien lunged. Their blades collided in midair.
CLANG!
Esdeath kicked away. Both landed. Neither waited. They charged again.
Steel screamed against steel. Ice erupted. Shadows answered. Esdeath thrust. Lucien blocked. A sheet of ice formed along her blade and spread toward his hand. Lucien released a pulse of Power of Destruction. Purple-black energy wrapped around his sword. The ice vanished, not shattered, not melted. Erased.
Esdeath's eyes narrowed. "Destruction."
Lucien swung, but Esdeath blocked. The destructive aura ate through the layer of ice protecting her rapier. Esdeath immediately retreated, her smile widening.
"Excellent."
She raised her free hand. Ice formed around her. Lucien's shadows surged forward. The two powers collided. Ice spears began forming. Black tendrils wrapped around them before they could fully materialize. The frozen constructs cracked. Darkness spread through the crystalline structures. Then the shadows devoured them one after another.
CRACK. CRACK. CRACK.
Lucien stared.
They're reacting on their own.
He hadn't ordered them to attack the ice. They had simply recognized it as something opposing them.
Esdeath's grin widened. "You're not completely controlling them."
"I'm getting there."
"Then hurry."
She vanished. Lucien barely caught the movement as her rapier struck toward his shoulder. The shadows moved on their own and blocked the attack. She spun. Another thrust. He parried. She changed direction again. Lucien's right sword intercepted her blade while his left swept toward her shoulder. Esdeath bent backward. The sword passed above her. She planted one hand against the floor. Ice exploded outward. Lucien jumped. Esdeath rose beneath him. Her rapier flashed. He twisted in midair. The blade grazed his coat. He landed several meters away.
Esdeath laughed once, short, sharp, and genuine.
"Weissschnabel."
Her voice was colder than the ice itself. Jagged ice spears formed throughout the arena, not dozens, but hundreds. They emerged from the walls, the floor, the air itself. Every spear pointed toward Lucien.
"Try surviving this."
The spears launched. The arena became a storm.
Lucien moved. A crimson magic circle appeared before him. The first spear struck.
BOOM!
The circle absorbed the impact. Another formation appeared beside him. Then another. Lucien moved between them. One barrier caught three spears. Another redirected five. A third shattered beneath the pressure. He raised his left hand. A rotating magic circle appeared. The remaining projectiles curved around him and collided with one another. Ice exploded. But more spears followed.
Lucien gritted his teeth.
Too many.
His shadows surged. Dark tendrils erupted from the ground, wrapped around the incoming ice, and pulled. The spears cracked, then disappeared.
Lucien exhaled. His breath came heavier now. Ice burned across his arms. Frostbite-like marks had begun appearing beneath his sleeves.
Esdeath saw them. "You're hurting yourself."
"I noticed."
"And you're still continuing."
Lucien smiled. "So are you."
Esdeath laughed. "Good answer."
A massive ice construct rose behind her, vaguely humanoid and clad in heavy armor, its surface etched with runes that shifted like living script, hinting at a force far older and far more dangerous than mere ice magic. The air around it distorted, carrying a faint, almost medicinal scent that made the shadows recoil slightly.
Lucien answered immediately. Controlled Power of Destruction layered itself along both ancient swords. Shadow projections stepped out of his own silhouette, each one solid enough to clash with the construct while tendrils restricted Esdeath's movement. His magic circles became adaptive barriers that didn't just block but absorbed and redirected ice energy, and short-range repositioning circles that let him vanish and reappear at new angles.
The sound of ice shattering under shadow filled the chamber. Darkness moved like living liquid. The contrasting heat of Lucien's demonic power pushed back against absolute cold, creating brief pockets of steaming air wherever the two forces met.
Esdeath's smile turned sharper.
"You're no longer an interesting potential," she said, voice carrying clearly over the chaos. "You're a genuine threat. One I intend to break… or claim."
Outside the reinforced viewing glass, the atmosphere had grown tense.
Grayfia stood with her hands clasped tightly in front of her. Her silver eyes never left Lucien. "If he doesn't keep control," she said quietly, "those shadows will consume him."
Grayroad leaned forward, heterochromatic eyes gleaming with fascination. "The Lucifuge bloodline is awakening. Look closely; his shadows are taking the form of the Shadow Wolf King."
Venelana's expression held a careful mixture of pride and worry. She had stopped reaching for the pastries entirely.
Kuroka's twin tails swayed rapidly, excitement and protectiveness warring on her face. "Looks like Master's work on his power matrix really paid off. It's still funny that he chose a creature with a tail to base it on."
Erza watched with professional focus, analyzing every exchange. "Their coordination is improving in real time. Neither is fighting to end it quickly. They are forcing each other higher."
Albedo's golden eyes had narrowed into sharp focus. The jealousy that had burned earlier was still present, but it had been tempered by something colder and more calculating as she studied both fighters.
The temperature dropped again. Ice erupted behind her. A massive construct emerged: an armored warrior nearly twice her height, its body layered with ice plates, enormous frozen blades on its shoulders, a crown-like structure around its head. The creature took one step. The arena shook.
Lucien raised his swords. The construct charged. He crossed his blades.
BOOM!
The impact drove him backward. His boots carved lines through the stone. The creature swung. Lucien ducked. His right sword carved through its arm. The Power of Destruction spread. Purple-black energy crawled across the ice. The entire limb began disintegrating.
Esdeath's eyes sharpened. She snapped her fingers. The construct abandoned the attack. Its damaged arm exploded into hundreds of smaller blades. Lucien barely raised a barrier. The ice storm struck. His magic circle shattered. He was thrown backward and landed hard. Pain shot through his shoulder.
Before he could rise, an icy blade stopped inches from his face.
Esdeath stood above him, rapier hovering over his throat.
Lucien smiled. His shadow grabbed her ankle. Esdeath's eyes widened. He pulled. She lost her balance. Lucien rolled aside. His shadow erupted. A massive fist formed from darkness and slammed into the remaining ice construct.
BOOM!
The creature shattered.
Esdeath landed gracefully. Lucien rose. His breathing was heavier. Frost covered parts of his arms. His fingers were beginning to stiffen. Yet his eyes were brighter than before.
Esdeath noticed. "So that's what you are."
"What?"
"A fighter. Not a noble playing at being one." She smiled. "You actually enjoy this."
Lucien paused, then laughed. "Maybe I do."
The words surprised even him.
For years, every step had carried weight, the weight of bloodline, expectations, House Lucifuge, House Gremory, his father's legacy, his mother's standards, the future waiting for him. Everything had always been about becoming something. But standing here, he wasn't an heir. He wasn't a future king. He wasn't Sirzechs' son or Grayfia's student.
He was simply Lucien.
A fighter facing someone who refused to let him hide behind anything else.
For the first time since his rebirth, the weight lifted.
Esdeath seemed to reach the same conclusion. Her smile changed. There was no mockery in it now. Only recognition.
They moved.
Their weapons collided.
CLANG!
Again.
CLANG!
Again.
Ice and shadow exploded around them. Lucien's shadows became faster, sharper, moving like extensions of his instincts. Esdeath's ice grew more aggressive. She froze the floor, then the walls, then the air itself. The entire arena transformed into her battlefield. Lucien's shadows crawled across the frozen surface. Ice rose to crush them. Darkness swallowed the ice. More appeared. The shadows consumed it again. Neither side surrendered.
Esdeath suddenly drove her rapier into the floor.
"Enough."
Ice exploded outward. The entire arena froze: walls, floor, ceiling. Everything became white-blue crystal. Lucien stood within the frozen battlefield, breath visible, shadows curling around him.
Esdeath stood across from him. Ice armor covered her shoulders and arms. A crown of frozen crystal hovered above her head, its surface beginning to fracture beneath the influence of Lucien's destruction.
She smiled.
Lucien smiled back.
Neither spoke. They didn't need to. They understood.
This was no longer an evaluation.
It was a challenge.
Lucien's eyes narrowed. His shadows gathered. He remembered every movement Esdeath had made, every feint, every thrust, every pattern. His magic circles began appearing around the battlefield. One. Two. Five. Ten. Their crimson lines rotated through the darkness.
Esdeath's eyes narrowed. "What are you preparing?"
Lucien lowered his stance. "Something new."
His shadows erupted.
"Eclipse Waltz."
Everything blurred.
Lucien disappeared. Esdeath's eyes widened. A silver blade emerged from her left. She blocked his attack. The attacker vanished. Another appeared behind her. She spun. Ice intercepted the sword. The image shattered, an illusion. Another Lucien appeared above her. Then another. Then another. Silver steel and black shadows danced through the frozen arena.
Esdeath blocked one strike. Two. Three. The fourth cut across her sleeve. She twisted. A shadow projection attacked from the opposite direction. She froze it. It shattered. The real Lucien emerged from the darkness behind her. Esdeath turned just in time.
CLANG!
Their weapons collided. The impact sent both backward. Esdeath slid across the ice. Lucien landed on one knee.
They stared at one another.
For once, Esdeath looked genuinely surprised. "You created illusions while moving through your shadows."
Lucien stood. "Something like that."
"And the magic circles?"
"Movement anchors."
Her smile returned. "Interesting."
Lucien tilted his head. "Is that all?"
Esdeath's expression changed. Lucien remembered her earlier question. Now he returned it.
"Is that all the power you have?"
Silence.
Esdeath stared at him. Then she smiled slowly, dangerously. A sadistic grin pulled across her face.
"You really don't know what you've just triggered."
The ice beneath her feet cracked. Her aura exploded. The crown above her head shattered. Fragments of crystal floated around her, then stopped, suspended in the air. Every shard pointed toward Lucien.
His eyes widened.
Esdeath raised her rapier. The temperature plunged.
"I was wondering when you'd finally give me a reason to stop testing you."
The ice shards began rotating. Lucien's shadows surged in response. His muscles screamed. His breathing became ragged. Frost covered his forearms. Yet he smiled.
Esdeath smiled wider. "Interesting. You're stronger than I thought."
She lowered her stance. "But can you keep up?"
Lucien tightened his grip around the ancient swords.
Behind him, the shadows began to rise not as tendrils, not as projections. Something larger was taking shape. Four enormous points of darkness emerged. Then a pair of glowing eyes opened within the blackness.
A massive lupine silhouette rose behind Lucien, taller than any training golem, its form woven from pure living darkness. The pressure in the arena doubled. The ice beneath Esdeath's feet cracked in a spreading web.
Outside the reinforced glass, Grayroad's eyes widened.
"That's not just a construct…"
Grayfia's voice was barely above a whisper.
"The Shadow Wolf King is answering him."
Lucien felt the hunger, the instinct, the ancient authority flooding through the connection. For the first time, the shadows did not merely obey.
They recognized him as their sovereign.
Esdeath's sadistic grin widened into pure, delighted hunger.
"Oh… now this is interesting."
The glowing eyes behind Lucien locked onto her.
And the arena trembled.
