Olivia Wynne had been eating quietly off to the side, but her ears were keenly focused on the conversation between Zachary Fairchild and Jasper Shaw.
The two men exchanged quite a few words. On the surface, each sentence seemed shallow, but taken together, every line was fraught with deeper meaning and hidden implications.
"Mr. Fairchild, there's an old saying: always leave a way out for others, so you can meet again on good terms. What do you think?"
Zachary Fairchild glanced at Jasper Shaw, his sharp eyes no longer as gentle as they had been just moments ago.
"Mr. Shaw, when you hold a position, you fulfill its duties. If the law doesn't allow for 'a way out,' then there's no need to leave one."
If he had been unsure why Jasper Shaw sought him out before the meal, he was certain now.
