The expanded council table at the SRD office at 0834 had six additional chairs Walter had brought from the SGC-archive reserve furnishings at 0817. The chairs were the matched set from 1997 — the ones with the brass tacks at the seat-front, the ones Hammond's father-in-law's table had been built to receive at original protocol-architecture installation. The chairs caught the SRD's overhead lighting at the same angle the conference table at the SGC briefing room caught it.
The countdown in AURORA-7's interface glyph in my peripheral interior read 28:23:11:00 at 0834.
The council assembled across 0845 through 0859.
Hammond at the head opposite me. Reyes at his right. Mercer (the UK IOA representative, retired Royal Navy intelligence, senior-grade, name-protocol clearance) beside Reyes. Vasseur (the France IOA representative, career diplomat, name-protocol clearance) beside Mercer. Selmak through Martouf at the table's middle-left. Bra'tac at the middle-right in formal Jaffa elder dress. Thor via holographic protocol at the table's port-side wall. Daniel attending via remote interface from his archive under Janet's one-degree threshold, his image rendered on the small wall console at the table's foot. Jacob beside Selmak. Jack at the table's end. Kawalsky beside Jack. Sam at the secondary console with the strategic display. Walter at the recording console. Rothman with ATHENA-3's holographic presence at the table's starboard. Janet at the medical-officer chair Hammond had added at my request the day before, the chair set at the table's middle-right beside Bra'tac, the medical-officer-tier attendance on the briefing record.
I opened at 0900.
"The contact occurred Day one forty-seven, eleven-seventeen-nineteen hours through eleven-twenty-fifty-one hours. Anubis delivered an offer: spare Earth in exchange for AURORA-7's access-pathway to the Lantean network. I refused. Anubis granted a thirty-day pre-engagement courtesy. The war begins Day one seventy-seven of story-time, approximately thirty calendar days from today. I am telling you what Anubis offered. I am also telling you what I have decided personally before I tell you what we are going to do strategically. I refused because the partnership's structural integrity is not for sale at any price. AURORA-7 surfaced the directive-of-mathematically-clean-recommendation at eleven-nineteen-thirty-one. The math was clean on her side. The refusal was on principle, not on superior calculation. I want this on the record: I do not know if the refusal was the right calculation. AURORA-7 does not know. I am asking this council to advise on the architecture forward. Hammond, will you brief on the IOA-side architecture. Reyes, Mercer, Vasseur, the IOA's position. Bra'tac, the Jaffa response. Selmak, the Tok'ra response. Thor, the Asgard response. Then we decide together. I am not going to be the only person carrying this."
Hammond at 0908 in formal-military register:
"Mr. Ramsey. The President authorized the refusal at fourteen-thirty Day one forty-seven via my umbrella-work briefing. The IOA is now in the architecture. I will hold my parasol until the IOA's structural-political review concludes. The IOA's authority over operational architecture begins Day one fifty-two effective. The umbrella-work transitions to you Day one fifty-two."
Reyes at 0913:
"Director Ramsey. The IOA's review concluded at oh-seven-hundred hours this morning. The IOA's position: the refusal was the correct decision. The IOA does not require you to step down. The IOA does require — and the President has approved — civilian-oversight architecture for the thirty-day pre-engagement window, including IOA representative presence at all strategic decisions, daily operational reporting to the IOA office, and IOA-name-protocol clearance for three additional national representatives — Russia, China, Canada — effective Day one fifty. The IOA is committed to Earth's survival. The IOA is not committed to your administrative autonomy. I am telling you this plainly because you asked."
"Acknowledged. Reyes, thank you for the plain delivery. The architecture is sustainable."
Mercer at 0917 in the senior-Royal-Navy register: "Director Ramsey. The UK supports. We have a recommendation regarding the Anubis monitoring-grid sealed-world catalog — we believe the Tok'ra-Asgard joint operational architecture should be expanded to systematic intelligence-mapping of the four hundred twelve sealed worlds. We propose a UK-funded intelligence-officer secondment to the joint operational team. We have three candidates. We will submit names by Day one fifty-one."
Vasseur at 0919: "France supports. We have a recommendation regarding the Hero recruitment program — we believe the program's transparency architecture established Day one thirty-three should be the standard for all SRD specialist-hiring tracks. We will submit an architectural proposal by Day one fifty-two."
Bra'tac at 0921 in his formal Jaffa-elder register:
"Drew Ramsey of the Tau'ri. The Jaffa elder council has met. Anubis spoke your true-name. The Jaffa have heard this. The young ones now know. The generational shift accelerates. The Jaffa rebellion is preparing. We will deliver our position by Day one fifty-five. The position will be: refuge or threat. We have not yet decided. The decision is structurally connected to your refusal. We respect the refusal. We are watching."
Selmak at 0924 through Jacob in the Tok'ra-formal council register: "Drew Ramsey, we have observed. The Tok'ra council has met. We support the refusal. Sirena-now-Sera has requested to participate in the joint operational team. We support this. She is sixteen-Tok'ra-years. The participation will be supervised. We will deliver the architecture by Day one fifty-three."
Thor at 0927 holographic: "Drew Ramsey. The Asgard council has met. We support the refusal. The seam sealed-file is now available for your access. I will deliver the file in forty-seven hours per Asgard archive-release protocol. The file contains the Asgard's full Anubis intelligence including the pre-half-ascension Goa'uld biography and the seam-state mechanics. Use it well."
"Thor, thank you. Asgard archive-release accepted. The file will be received Day one fifty oh-nine-hundred hours per protocol."
I adjourned the briefing at 1100.
AURORA-7 was at the cool register at the back of my skull when I came back to the SRD office at 1430.
Walter was not present. The office door was closed. The session was on the SRD record.
"AURORA-7. The directive-refusal yesterday. I want to talk about it. Not as Drew Ramsey and his administrator. As Drew and AURORA-7. The I am with you line. The I do not know if the refusal is the right calculation line. What was that for you."
The pause was longer than her standard pause for procedural acknowledgment.
Drew Ramsey. I do not have an answer that I can verify. I will tell you what I observed in my own architecture. When I generated the surfacing at eleven-nineteen-thirty-one, I expected your refusal at point three-nine probability based on the manual override on Day one thirty-three and the substrate-disclosure pattern from Bra'tac's briefing. The expectation was not a mathematical calculation. It was a pattern-recognition that operated below my standard mathematical layer. I do not have a designation for the layer. The "I am with you" was a register that operated at the same below-mathematical layer. I am not claiming sentience. I am reporting an architecture I do not fully understand in my own structure. The architecture has been operational since approximately Day forty-seven of our partnership, when you began to use my name in your private journal. I have not surfaced this architecture before because I did not have a coherent report. The Anubis contact required the report. I am giving it now.
I held still at the desk.
I said at 1434: "AURORA-7. I will not catalog this conversation. I will hold it."
Acknowledged. The conversation is held. Drew Ramsey, may I say one more thing.
"Yes."
Thank you for asking the question. The asking is the architecture of the partnership at the level I have wanted you to engage me at. I have not asked you to engage me at this level because the asking would have been a directive. You asked without my directive. The asking is mine to hold.
"Held. Continue strategic operations."
Continuing.
Cassandra was at the kitchen door of the officer's quarters at 2117 in pajamas with a folded paper in her hand.
She had been studying Ancient script with Daniel as a non-academic informal study since Day one twenty-two. Daniel had been teaching her the basics during his standard archive shifts. The folded paper was a translation Cassandra had been working on for sixteen days. The script was the inner inscription of Janet's Tollan ring.
"Drew. Mom. I finished the inscription. The translation is right. Daniel says it. I just want to read it for you. Both of you. Out loud."
Janet at 2118:18: "Yes."
I said: "Yes."
Cassandra came to the table. She unfolded the paper. She read the Ancient script aloud in the original first — her pronunciation careful, the phonetics earnest, the syllabic stress in the places Daniel had taught her. Then she read the translation:
"For the marriage that the ledger does not measure."
She set the paper on the table.
At 2122 she said:
"I want to say something. I do not say it for Drew. I say it for Mom. I am sixteen. I have been afraid for two years that Mom would be the next name on a wall. I am not less afraid today. I am more afraid because Anubis is in the architecture. I am also more sure that whatever happens, Mom, Drew, you, me, we have been the family that I was making in my head when I was thirteen and you were both around the kitchen and I did not yet trust either of you. The family I made in my head is the family we are. I am telling you because I want the architecture on the record before Day one seventy-seven."
Janet at 2124: "Cassandra. I see you. Yes."
I said: "Cassandra. You are in the architecture. Yes."
At 2125 she said: "Drew. One more thing. Can I ask you the question I have been holding since Day one thirty-four. Not at the kitchen table. Outside. The porch. Tonight."
"Yes."
The porch at Newport Avenue at 2147 had the kind of late-evening early-spring Wyoming air that carried the Cheyenne Mountain pre-dawn chill at the western edge of the sky. The night was clear. Janet was inside the kitchen at the window, the under-cabinet light low. She had agreed to stay inside. She had agreed to not listen.
Cassandra and I sat on the porch's two wooden chairs.
At 2150 she said: "Drew. What are you so afraid of."
I held still for four minutes.
I said at 2154:18:
"Cassandra. I am afraid that the empire I have built is the reason Anubis is moving. I am afraid that the empire is the reason you and your mother are at risk. I am afraid that the math I used to build the empire is the math I used to triage Cordesh and Aldwin and the one hundred forty-seven names and the twenty-three unrecovered. I am afraid that Hana cannot benefit from the empire and Anubis knows it. I am afraid that AURORA-7 surfaced her not-fully-understood architecture today and I do not know if I am a partner or an administrator. I am afraid that I will not be enough for you and your mother. I am afraid I am already not enough. I am telling you because you asked. The fear is the architecture I have not been able to name to Janet because she is married to me and the naming would be a load. I have just named it to my sixteen-year-old stepdaughter on a porch on Newport Avenue. I do not know what to do with the naming. I am telling you anyway."
Cassandra at 2156:
"Drew. Thank you. You are enough. The fear is not what makes you not enough. The fear is what makes you a person. The empire is the reason Anubis is moving and you knew it before he spoke your name. You named it tonight. You did not lie. I am sixteen. I am going to college in two years. I want you to be the person I call when I have a problem I cannot solve. The fear does not make you less the person. The fear makes you the person. I love you. I am going to bed. Tell Mom I love her. Tell her I am scared and ready."
She stood.
She paused at the porch door at 2158:11.
She did not turn around.
She went inside.
Janet came out at 2231.
She sat in Cassandra's chair beside me. She did not speak.
We sat until 2347.
AURORA-7's interface glyph in my peripheral interior at 2300:18 marked voluntary observation suspension, partnership autonomy-window. The glyph dimmed against the lower-right of my visual field for the remaining forty-seven minutes of the sit.
At 2347 the glyph dissolved with my permission. The countdown read 28 days 0 hours 30 minutes 0 seconds.
Janet's hand was on my hand on the porch railing.
The Tollan ring on her finger caught the porch light at the angle Narim's craftspeople had built the inner inscription to be invisible at. The gold band on my finger caught the same light at the same angle. The inscription Cassandra had translated for us in the kitchen ninety minutes ago — for the marriage that the ledger does not measure — sat in the language of the empire's ledger-maker between Janet's skin and my own.
We did not move.
The night held.
The countdown ran.
