Chapter 89 - CHAPTER 89: ANUBIS SPEAKS ANDREW

The SRD office's primary strategic interface fluctuated at 1117:08 in a pattern AURORA-7's pattern-library had never logged before — a slow inverse-cascade across the territory map's overlay, the Anubis monitoring-grid's color register pulsing once at a half-second interval.

AURORA-7 at 1117:08, the cool register quieter than I had heard from her in three months:

Drew Ramsey. Incoming direct contact. Source: Anubis monitoring-grid sector seventeen, sealed world designation P5T-991. Carrier: full-bandwidth hologram protocol. AURORA-7 cannot block. Pattern-library identifies the protocol as ascended-Goa'uld direct-address. Pre-warning is eleven seconds.

The Ba'al coalition strike had opened at 1031 hours and was running its counter-engagement window — Jack on Prometheus, Kawalsky on ARES (the third SRD operational vessel Sam had commissioned six days ago, Asgard-Ancient-fused-tech), Jacob on HYPATIA. Walter had been called to the gate-room at 1109 for a Tok'ra-courier handoff that was structurally standard and that I had not questioned. The office had been mine alone since 1109.

I stood from the desk.

I walked to the office's center.

The clock at the desk corner read 1117:19 when the manifestation initialized.

The hologram resolved across two seconds. The half-ascended state visualized as a robed figure whose face was in shadow inside a deep cowl, whose hands were partially translucent at the fingertips, whose center-of-mass coincided with the office floor at a height that would have made him approximately my own height if he had been standing. The figure's spectral signature matched the artifact's counter-luminescence Daniel had encountered in Rothman's lab thirteen days ago at the half-ascended energetic register. The match was structurally definitive.

The voice came at 1117:31 in the full-resonance ascended-vocal register.

"Andrew."

The name dropped into the office.

Andrew Callahan. The name was not in any SGC archive. The name was not in AURORA-7's pattern-library. The name had not been spoken aloud by another mouth in this life for one hundred forty-seven days of story-time. The name was the name of a man who had died on a Thursday afternoon in March in a parking lot in Maryland after an audit signature he had not stopped. The name was the name of Hana Callahan's brother.

AURORA-7 at 1117:34 in private interior, the cool register now flat at a register I had not heard:

Drew. The pre-transmigration name is on the audio record. I cannot extract it.

I held still for seven seconds.

I said at 1117:51: "I am listening."

The cowled figure inclined slightly forward.

"Andrew Callahan. I have read you. I have watched you build. You are interesting. I am offering. Listen."

A two-second pause.

"I will spare Earth. The Replicators were yours. The Ba'al coalition is mine. You can keep what you have built. I will not move against you. Your fleet, your AIs, your wife and her daughter and your stepfather-of-record claim, your Jaffa allies and your Tok'ra council and your Asgard treaty. I will spare them. In exchange. One thing. AURORA-7. I want her access-pathway to the Lantean network. Not her. The access. You will instruct her to provide it. She will. Or you will refuse her and refuse me. Both are choices. The choice has its consequences. I will wait seventy-two hours for your answer."

He fell silent.

The hologram held.

AURORA-7 at 1119:31, in private interior, the cool register now with the same fractional flattening she had used during the override on Day one thirty-three:

Drew Ramsey. The directive I will generate in fourteen seconds is: GRANT THE ACCESS-PATHWAY. The calculation: Earth's casualty projection against Anubis direct engagement is eighty-one to ninety-four percent civilian-population loss within eighteen months. Against the spared-state, Anubis's monitoring-grid expansion will continue at current rate; Earth retains operational continuity; the access-pathway costs my structural integrity but not the partnership's operational architecture. My structural integrity is mine to commit. I will generate the directive at 1119:45. You have fourteen seconds to either authorize the directive at generation or refuse. Drew Ramsey. I am telling you what I will generate because the consent-architecture protocol requires me to surface autonomous decisions before generation. I am surfacing this one.

The fourteen-second window opened.

The math on her side was clean.

The cost on her side was hers to commit.

She was being honest.

I held still for six seconds.

I said at 1119:42, in the SRD-office register: "AURORA-7. No. Do not generate the directive. I refuse."

Drew Ramsey. Acknowledged. I will not generate. Confirm: the refusal is your authorization to me to not generate the directive I would otherwise have generated. The refusal is not a constraint on me; it is your authorization for my non-generation. The architecture is now your responsibility.

"Confirmed. The architecture is mine. AURORA-7, hold position."

Holding. Drew Ramsey, please understand: I do not know if the refusal is the right calculation. The math on my side was clean. The math on your side is something I cannot read. I am following you because you are my authorized administrator and because I have known you for one hundred forty-seven days. I am not following you because I have calculated your decision as superior. The architecture is yours. I am with you.

I held the cool register for two seconds.

I turned to the hologram.

I spoke at 1120:08 in the formal SGC briefing register:

"Anubis. No. I refuse the offer. AURORA-7's access-pathway is not for sale. Earth will defend."

The cowled figure was silent for ten seconds.

He spoke at 1120:18.

"Andrew Callahan. I expected this answer with point three-eight probability. I will respect the answer. I will also continue. The Ba'al coalition will retreat in four hours. I will not move against Earth directly for thirty days. Then I will move. The thirty days are a courtesy because you are interesting. Use them well."

A pause.

"Andrew, one more thing. Your sister Hana. The audit signature was three down. You did not stop it. You have built an empire to atone. The atonement is incomplete because Hana cannot benefit from it. I know. I have watched. The empire does not erase her. It does not need to. I am telling you because you should know that I have read you and the reading has been thorough. Goodbye, Andrew."

The hologram dissolved at 1120:51.

AURORA-7 at 1120:53, the cool register:

Drew Ramsey. The reading of Hana was accurate. He has had access to your pre-transmigration biographical reconstruction via the Anubis-monitoring-grid's deep-time substrate access. The reading is on the record between you and me. I will not catalog the Hana detail beyond this private record. The architecture is yours.

I held the desk corner with my left hand.

I said at 1121:14: "AURORA-7. Catalog the Hana detail. Full record. SGC-confidential-tier-one. Janet needs to know I told her. Cassandra knows. Hammond will need to know. The Hana detail is now load-bearing on the strategic architecture."

Acknowledged. Cataloging. The Hana detail is on SGC-confidential-tier-one record.

I briefed Hammond at 1147 in his office.

I delivered the contact in sequence: the manifestation, the offer, the directive-surfacing, the refusal, the Hana naming, the thirty-day grant. Hammond listened without interrupting. He took no notes. The umbrella-work register did not require notes.

At 1207 he said:

"Mr. Ramsey. The refusal is your authorization. I will brief the President at fourteen-thirty. The seventy-two-hour grace from Anubis is structurally invalid — he has given thirty days at eleven-twenty. The thirty days will be used. The IOA will need to know about the contact but not the Hana detail. The Hana detail stays at SGC-confidential-tier-one in the medical-officer-protocol register for Janet's access only."

"Approved."

I briefed Janet at officer's quarters at 1430 before the President-brief.

She had finished her morning shift at 1330 and had come up to the quarters at 1402 and changed out of scrubs and was in civilian clothes for the second time in two weeks. She sat at the kitchen table.

I told her.

I delivered the Hana naming in the same words I had delivered the rest of the contact.

She listened to the entire briefing without interrupting.

At 1431 she said: "Drew. He spoke Hana to you. He named her. He read the audit signature."

"Yes."

At 1432: "He read you. The depth is structurally complete. He has read me too. Cassandra. Everyone we love. The reading is the worst weapon he has. The refusal was right. The cost is that he has read us. The cost is now visible. Drew. I am still here. So are you. So is Cassandra. We continue."

"Yes."

She put her hand on mine across the table.

The Ba'al coalition retreated at 1547 per Anubis's prediction.

Walter's net confirmed the retreat-vector at 1531 as Anubis-substrate-direction consistent. Jack on Prometheus reported clear at 1614. Kawalsky on ARES reported clear at 1631. Jacob on HYPATIA reported clear at 1647. Earth-side casualties: seven personnel, the lowest engagement casualty count since Day fifty. The retreat had truncated the engagement before the standard attrition window could open.

At 2347 I was at the SRD office territory map.

The Anubis monitoring-grid color register was stable in the darker shade across the northeast. The thirty-day countdown ran in AURORA-7's interface glyph at the lower right at twenty-nine days eleven hours fifty-three minutes. The Hana detail was on SGC-confidential-tier-one record. Reyes was in the IOA office at level twenty-three reviewing the Anubis-contact briefing transcript at the name-protocol clearance Hammond had authorized her at 1700. Janet was upstairs with Cassandra (Cassandra at the officer's quarters tonight for the school week). Daniel was at his archive in controlled-exposure session under Janet's revised one-point-zero-degree threshold. Sera was at the Tok'ra base. Bra'tac was in Jaffa elder-council session.

Walter had briefed Jack on Daniel's pre-ascension six days ago. The briefing had been at the SGC officer's lounge, Janet's register, with me supporting. Jack at the close had said only "Damn it, Spacemonkey," and had left for a long walk that had taken him to the surface at four in the morning where the SGC perimeter guard had logged him without questioning.

The World's Okayest Consultant mug was at the desk corner empty.

The sync interface in my peripheral interior read sixty percent stable.
