Chapter 399 - The Wind Stopped.

Eric's eyes tracked me as I pulled Azure out of the open and put her back against the wall beside me.

His gaze held for a second longer than it needed to. Then slid away while he kept going under his breath, a continuous low stream of complaint that Max's voice outside kept overlapping and drowning.

"I know I called you here for a reason." Max had them all the way now. The speech had found its peak; the crowd noise under it was a single thick instrument. "And I know every one of you came for the same one. To see there is justice inside these walls. To see with your own eyes that no man hurts the Walls and walks away from them afterward."

My finger started tapping against my thigh.

Counting beats. Counting the wind coming up that corridor, because it hadn't stopped and it hadn't slowed, and there was no door open anywhere in this building that should have been making it.
