The last time I ran like this, I was being chased my werewolves on the full moon. Thankfully we had some distance between us and the dire beast, we ran down the street till we got to Mr. Adler's car. We got into the car as quickly as we could and I looked behind to see the terrifying creature getting closer and closer.
"We need to get out of here" I yelled at the top of my voice.
Mr. Adler stepped on the gas so hard that I almost rolled into the passenger's seat. We drove around the block but the dire beast kept up, bashing into cars and anything in its way.
"We're not losing him" I said.
"There's a phone in the glove compartment, take it out and call Susan"
I took the phone out of the glove compartment and searched the contact logs till I found Susan's details and dialed her.
"Dad, did you find Fred?" She inquired as soon as she answered the call.
"I'm with your Dad, I'm alright" I answered.
"Fred" Karen and Chris cheered in unison, they were with Susan. "Where are you guys?" Chris asked.
Mr. Adler snatched the phone from my hand before I could answer "Susan listen to me, the dire beast is chasing us"
"What? The dire beast is here?" Susan sounded terrified.
"Listen to me sweetheart, I can't lose this beast so I'm going to put it in the crosshairs of the AMU which means I'm bringing it to the motel. I need you and your friends to find a way to get the students somewhere safe"
"What? H-how?" Susan stuttered.
"I don't know darling, pull a fire alarm, just try anything to get people out of there. We're seven minutes away from the motel"
Mr. Adler ran a red light and almost collided with another vehicle but he was able to maneuver his way, but in doing so he swerved so hard that the phone fell under his seat.
"Can you reach the phone?" He asked me.
I tried but with our speed and constant swerving on the road I wasn't able to reach. We drove for a few minutes and then we started to near the motel. Susan must've really pulled a fire alarm because I could see everyone gathered outside in the parking lot, there were more AMU vehicles at the motel and a lot more soldiers on foot. The dire beast let out a roar that seemed to catch their attention, I could hear their faint screams that became more audible as we came closer. Mr. Adler sped past the motel and cut into the next street and parked.
"We need to help them" I said.
Mr. Adler grabbed a duffle bag from the backseat, it was the same one Susan snuck on the bus that had all his weapons "We will, we just need to be smart about it if you don't want everyone knowing what you can do"
"What's the plan?" I inquired.
"The only thing I've seen hurt that thing is your lightning" He grabbed a few canisters from the duffel bag "These will create a smoke screen so thick that no one will be able to see a thing, you will use this cover to get close enough to the beast to hit him with everything you've got. Understood?"
"Let's do it" I answered.
We heard gunshots as we approached the motel, the AMU had engaged the dire beast. I saw about three soldier directing the students to safety, Mr. Adler and I sneaked past and climbed up the stairs and exited at a balcony which had a clear view of the dire beast.
Mr. Adler turned to me "Are you ready?"
I stretched out my arms and buzzed lightning off them "I'm ready"
The dire beast was roaring and smashing everything in site, the AMU unleashed all their ammunitions on it but it barely seemed to make a difference, you would think they would learn something from the last encounter with this thing.
Mr. Adler was ready to throw the canisters when the ground quaked again, I quickly grabbed the balcony railing to aid my balance, just like before the ground split open and there was a big hole at the center of the parking lot. The dire beast stopped his rampage and started to make his way to the hole.
"We need to stop it" I said.
Mr. Adler grabbed my arm "No"
"Why?"
"Your secret, that's why. You were already kidnapped earlier today and now the dire beast showed up, and yes I know that the initial plan was for you to blast that thing but it's going away, it stopped rampaging. We're too exposed out here and using your powers now will not do anything good for you"
Mr. Adler was right, everyone in Stowe knows that I was summoned by the AMU and now I've been kidnapped and the dire beast just attacked the motel the Stowe high school students just happened to be staying. That was more than enough coincidence for today.
"So what now?" I asked.
"Damage control" Mr. Adler answered. "The AMU is going to interrogate you again and they need to believe that you are not a person of interest in whatever is happening"
The Dire beast got into the hole and it closed up, the chaos started to settle, no more gunshots or screaming.
"I need to get out of here" Mr. Adler said, he then grabbed me by the shoulder. "When the AMU interrogates you, don't answer every question. You are a teenager who got kidnapped by scary supernaturals and they didn't tie you up properly and you managed to escape before they could realize. Do you understand what I'm saying?"
He was giving me a cover story "I understand"
"I'm sure you were afraid at one point and you're going to show them that fear whenever they ask you something you can't roll with, just tell them it happened so fast and that you aren't sure. Act scared, what did I say?"
"Act scared" I responded.
Mr. Adler grabbed his duffle bag and ran off the stairs. I went down to the parking lot and a soldier came up to me "You're one of the student from Stowe?" I nodded. "The AMU needs to secure the screen, I'll take you to the other students"
He escorted me out the back gate of the motel which lead to a back alley street and the rest of my class where the end of the street.
"Fred!" Karen exclaimed and rushed to give me a hug. "You're okay"
Chris gave me a hug of his own "That scared the hell out of me"
"Wait, Fred? You're the kid that was kidnapped" The soldier realized you I was. "How did you escape?"
"Pure luck" I answered.
"Stay here, someone will come to take your statement" The soldier said and went back to the motel.
"I'm glad you're alright" Susan smiled. "My Dad? Where is he?"
"He got out, he's fine"
The other kids started to surround us, asking the usual questions, if I was okay and how I escaped.
"Fredrick Powell" A soldier called out.
"I'm here"
"Come with me please" The soldier led me back into the motel's parking lot where the AMU engaged the dire beast, there were shell casings littered all over the place, all these bullets and the dire beast just strolled out of here like nothing happened. The soldier brought me to another soldier standing in the parking lot and I realized it was Sergeant Paul, the same guy who interrogated me when the AMU picked me up from school.
"Hey Fred, remember me?"
I nodded "Yes"
"I'm going to take the statement of your kidnapping while it's still fresh in your memory" He said and began what felt more like an interrogation than a statement. I did exactly what Mr. Adler taught me to do, I acted scared. I told him how they kidnapped me and how they sedated me in the car and I told him I woke up in an apartment and that the ropes they used to restrain me weren't tight enough so I managed to untie myself and got out before they could notice and I got back to the motel to see it was under attack. He asked me if I remembered where the apartment was were they held me. I did remember where it was but it occurred to me that if they went looking they would find chains in the room they keep me instead of ropes so I gave the response Mr. Adler told me to give 'Sorry I can't remember, I got out and started to run. It all happened so fast'
After giving my statement I rejoined the other students and waited for the AMU to tell us what happens next.
