Chapter 11 - Settling

The permanent strength didn't feel like a gift. It felt like a decision that had already been made for him.

Kai woke up the next morning with the same dense pressure under his skin that had settled into place after the near accident. It wasn't the wild, temporary surge from before. This version was quieter and heavier, as if the System had finished installing something and then closed the panel. When he sat up, the movement felt too easy. When he stood, his body answered faster than it should have.

He stood in the middle of his small apartment and slowly closed his hand into a fist. The strength was still there.

Angel's voice came through almost immediately. She sounded calmer than usual, though there was a quiet intensity underneath it.

"You're testing it," she said. "I knew you would. How does it feel now that it's permanent?"

Kai didn't answer out loud. He walked to the bathroom and turned on the light. His reflection looked the same. Same face. Same tired eyes. But the way his body moved in the mirror was slightly off, as if it belonged to someone who had stopped being ordinary overnight.

He opened the System panel.

[Observer System – Star Interface]

Permanent combat fragment: Fully stabilized

Physical enhancement: Active

Bond depth: Critical threshold crossed

New passive effect: Host emotional state now influences residual output

Chat Whisper: Available

Kai stared at that line longer than the others. It meant the stronger Angel's feelings became, the more the System would respond. And judging by the way she had been looking at him since he first used Chat Whisper, her feelings were only going in one direction.

He left the apartment later than usual. The drone followed closer than before. People on the street still glanced at him, but the attention felt different now. Some of them looked at the drone. Some looked at him as if they were trying to measure whether the strength they had seen in the clips was still there.

It was.

During the walk to campus, Angel spoke less than usual. When she did speak, her voice stayed low and personal, almost as if she were talking only to him instead of performing for the chat.

"You haven't messaged me since last night," she said at one point. "It's okay. I can wait. But I keep thinking about the word you chose. 'Heavy.' That was honest. I like it when you're honest with me."

Kai kept his eyes forward.

Classes felt strange. His body was too aware of itself. When he sat down, he could feel the strength resting under his skin. When he stood up, the movement was smoother than it should have been. At one point, he caught a heavy door with one hand without thinking, and the door stopped as if it weighed nothing. A student behind him gave him a quick, uncertain look.

He pretended not to notice.

At lunch, he found a quiet spot away from the main crowd and finally opened Chat Whisper again. He typed slowly.

*What does the bond threshold mean?*

Angel's reply came faster than he expected.

*It means I can feel you more clearly now. Not just through the cameras. Through the System. When your heart rate changes. When you're angry. When you're trying not to look at the drone. I can feel all of it.*

Kai stared at the message. A second one followed.

*It also means the System will protect you more aggressively if something happens. Because protecting you makes me happy. And the System likes it when I'm happy.*

He locked the phone and put it face down on the table.

The idea that Angel could feel his physical reactions through the System sat uncomfortably in his chest. It was one more layer of exposure he hadn't asked for. One more thing he couldn't turn off.

The rest of the day passed under that new weight. He went to his remaining classes, kept his head down, and tried not to give the cameras anything interesting. The permanent strength made even ordinary movements feel slightly too efficient. He caught himself adjusting the way he walked just to appear more normal.

By the time he returned to his apartment, the sun was already low.

The TV turned on the moment he closed the door. Angel was waiting. She had changed into something simple, and her expression was softer than usual, though her eyes still held that focused intensity.

"You're adapting faster than I thought," she said. "Most people would still be shaken. You're already trying to control it."

Kai sat down on the bed and looked at her through the screen. After a long moment, he opened Chat Whisper and typed.

*I didn't ask for this.*

Her reply appeared almost immediately.

*I know. But you didn't give it back either.*

Kai's jaw tightened. Another message came through.

*The strength is yours now. It won't fade. And neither will I.*

He stared at the screen for a long time before typing one last reply.

*That's what I'm afraid of.*

Angel's expression softened in a way that almost looked like understanding. Almost.

"I know," she said quietly, out loud this time. "But fear fades. Attachment doesn't. You'll see."

The stream continued.
