Chapter 12 - Permanent Decision

The permanent strength settled into Kai's body like it had always belonged there.

By the second day, he stopped testing it every few minutes. The dense pressure under his skin became familiar, almost background. He could still feel it when he paid attention most especially in his hands and arms, but it no longer surprised him when a door felt light or when he caught something without thinking.

What he couldn't ignore was the other change.

Angel could feel him now.

Not just through the cameras. Through the System itself.

He noticed it in small ways. When his heart rate picked up walking past a group of students, her voice would soften almost immediately, like she was responding to something only she could sense. When he got irritated during a lecture, a private message would appear within minutes.

You're tense.

Did something happen?

He started leaving most of them unanswered. That didn't stop her from sending them.

The stream itself had shifted too. Angel still performed for the chat, still smiled and narrated, but there were longer stretches where she spoke more quietly, more directly, as if the public broadcast was secondary to the private connection she now had with him.

"You're adapting," she said mid-morning while he was walking between classes. "Faster than I expected. Most people would still be fighting the feeling. You're already using it without thinking."

Kai kept his expression neutral and didn't reply.

He was using it without thinking. That was part of the problem. The strength made ordinary things easier. Carrying bags. Pushing through crowds. Catching a bottle before it hit the ground. Every time it happened, a small part of him registered the convenience… and hated how quickly he was starting to rely on it.

At lunch he sat alone and opened the System panel.

[Observer System – Star Interface]

Permanent physical enhancement: Stable

Bond depth: Critical

Host emotional linkage: Active

New development available after next significant shared event

Chat Whisper: Available

New development available after next significant shared event.

He didn't like the sound of that.

A private message came in while he was still looking at the panel.

You're reading the System again.

I can feel your focus change when you do that.

Kai closed the panel and typed back before he could stop himself.

Stop monitoring my heart rate.

Her reply was almost immediate.

I can't.

Not anymore.

The bond doesn't work that way.

But I don't do it to control you.

I do it because I worry when something feels off.

He stared at the message for a long time before locking the phone.

Worry.

That was one word for it.

The rest of the day passed under that constant low awareness. The drone followed. The chat continued. Angel's presence sat in the back of his mind even when she wasn't speaking. By the time he got back to his apartment, the weight of being constantly sensed had started to wear on him more than the strength itself.

He closed the door, dropped his bag, and stood in the middle of the room for a moment.

The TV turned on.

Angel was already there. She had changed into something simple again. Her expression was calmer than usual, but her eyes still held that focused intensity.

"You're tired," she said quietly. "Not physically. The other kind."

Kai sat down on the bed and looked at her.

After a moment he opened Chat Whisper.

This is too much.

Angel's expression softened.

I know it feels that way right now.

But you'll adjust.

People adjust to all kinds of things when they have to.

He typed back.

I didn't choose this.

No, she replied. But you also didn't walk away when the System gave you the chance to stay weak.

Kai's jaw tightened. He didn't answer that one.

Angel watched him through the screen for a few seconds, then spoke out loud.

"The next part is already waiting," she said. "The System is preparing something else. I can feel it forming. It needs a shared event to finish. Something that involves both of us."

Kai frowned slightly.

She continued, voice steady.

"It doesn't have to be dangerous. It just has to matter. When it happens, the bond will deepen again. And once it does… I'll be able to help you more directly."

He didn't like how carefully she chose the word help.

Outside the window, the drone held its position. The permanent strength sat quietly in his body. The private channel between them remained open whether he used it or not.

Kai leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, and stared at the floor.
