Chapter 16 - The First Advantage

The split didn't disappear.

It just… tightened.

—

People moved.

Not far.

But enough to show choice.

Clusters forming.

Distances growing.

—

Jules reorganized quickly.

Positions.

Rotations.

Movement paths.

Control.

—

Susan stayed mobile.

Talking.

Checking.

Pulling people back into awareness.

—

The third group—

Spread out.

Not fully alone.

But not connected either.

Watching only themselves.

—

And Mike—

Watched all three.

—

"Too many gaps," he said quietly.

—

Sara stood beside him.

"You just told them not to split," she replied.

—

"They didn't listen."

—

"They're scared."

—

Mike didn't respond.

Because that wasn't the problem.

Fear wasn't unpredictable.

People were.

—

"Then we adapt around them," he said.

—

Before Sara could respond—

It happened.

—

A sound.

Sharp.

Close.

—

Not from the forest.

From within the clearing.

—

Someone gasped.

—

Mike turned instantly.

Tracked the direction.

—

Right side.

Outer edge.

One of the independent group.

A woman.

Standing alone.

—

No—

Not alone.

—

A man stood a few steps from her.

Facing her.

Talking.

—

Too far.

Too quiet.

—

Mike's eyes narrowed.

"That's wrong," he said.

—

Sara followed his gaze.

"What?"

—

"They're not aligned," Mike said.

—

The woman nodded at something the man said.

But—

Her expression didn't match.

—

Half a second late.

—

The man stepped closer.

—

Mike moved.

Fast.

—

"Jules!" he called.

—

Jules turned instantly.

Followed Mike's movement.

—

"Shift right!" Mike snapped.

—

Jules didn't question it.

"Move!" he shouted.

—

People reacted.

Late.

But moving.

—

Susan turned as well.

Already heading toward the pair.

—

The woman laughed suddenly.

Too loud.

Too sharp.

—

Then—

Stopped.

—

Just—

Stopped.

—

The man in front of her froze too.

—

Both of them—

Still.

—

"Don't stop talking!" Susan shouted as she closed in.

—

Too late.

—

The man vanished first.

Gone mid-breath.

—

The woman screamed—

—

And disappeared.

—

Two.

At once.

—

The clearing erupted.

—

"No—no—"

"How—?"

"They were right there—"

—

"Positions!" Jules shouted.

But his voice didn't cut through like before.

—

Because this was different.

—

Mike stopped moving.

Not from shock.

From focus.

—

"Too isolated," he said.

"Too delayed."

—

Sara reached him.

"What just happened?" she asked.

—

"They weren't connected enough," Mike replied.

—

"They were talking—"

—

"Not aligned," he said sharply.

—

Sara went quiet.

—

Mike turned.

Scanning fast.

—

Jules' group—

Tight.

Structured.

But rigid.

—

Susan's group—

Connected.

But scattered.

—

The independents—

Now panicking.

Breaking further.

—

"They're collapsing," Mike said.

—

"What do we do?" Sara asked.

—

Mike didn't hesitate this time.

—

"Force alignment."

—

He stepped forward.

Raised his voice.

Louder than before.

—

"Everyone listen!"

—

It cut through.

Barely.

But enough.

—

"If you stay in one system—you die!" he said.

—

That stopped people.

Just enough.

—

"Structure alone creates gaps," he continued.

"Connection alone creates delays."

—

"Then what?" someone shouted.

—

Mike pointed.

Direct.

—

"You move in layers."

—

Confusion.

—

"Pairs," he said.

"Always two. No one alone."

—

"Groups of five. Always overlapping."

—

"Movement stays fluid. No fixed positions."

—

Jules was already adjusting.

"You heard him! Move!"

—

Susan picked it up instantly.

"Stay engaged—talk, respond—don't drift!"

—

People started moving.

Not smoothly.

Not perfectly.

But together.

—

Mike watched.

Adjusting.

Tracking.

—

"Too slow," he muttered.

—

Another shift.

Left side.

—

He turned.

—

A man stumbled backward.

Panic in his eyes.

—

"No—no—stay with me—" someone shouted.

—

Mike ran.

—

"Talk!" he snapped.

"Look at him—keep him engaged!"

—

The second person grabbed the man's shoulders.

"Stay with me—look at me—"

—

The man blinked.

Disoriented.

—

For a second—

Too long—

—

His outline flickered.

—

Sara inhaled sharply.

—

"Mike—"

—

"Closer!" Mike shouted.

—

Jules moved in.

Closing distance.

—

Susan joined.

Three.

Now four.

—

The man gasped—

—

And stayed.

—

Didn't vanish.

—

Silence hit again.

Different this time.

—

"He's still here…" someone whispered.

—

Mike stepped back slowly.

Watching.

Confirming.

—

"It works," he said.

—

Not relief.

Just fact.

—

But then—

He looked around.

—

Two were gone.

—

And that didn't change.

—

Sara looked at him.

"You stopped it," she said.

—

Mike shook his head.

"No."

—

His gaze moved across the group.

—

"I slowed it."

—

That landed harder.

—

Because it meant—

This wasn't solved.

—

Just delayed.

—

Jules exhaled.

Hard.

"We hold this formation," he said.

—

Susan nodded.

"No one breaks it."

—

The group tightened.

Closer.

More aware.

—

Not safe.

—

But better.

—

Sara stepped closer to Mike again.

Close enough that her shoulder brushed his.

—

"You were right," she said quietly.

—

Mike didn't look at her.

"Not enough," he replied.

—

She studied him for a moment.

Then—

"You don't have to solve all of it at once."

—

Mike finally glanced at her.

—

"That's not how this works," he said.

—

Sara held his gaze.

Soft.

Steady.

—

"Then don't do it alone."

—

For a moment—

He didn't respond.

—

Then—

A small nod.

—

Not agreement.

—

But not rejection either.

—

Around them—

The group moved.

Adjusted.

Held.

—

And for the first time—

They weren't just reacting.

—

They were resisting.

—

But somewhere beyond the trees—

Unseen—

—

Something was still watching.

—

And recalculating.
