Chapter 65 - Bonus Chapter 8: The Big Surprise

The day started like every other Saturday.

Peacefully.

Which should have been my first warning.

Because peaceful mornings in our house rarely stayed peaceful for long.

I was in the kitchen making coffee.

She walked in wearing one of my oversized hoodies.

Still half asleep.

"Morning."

I smiled.

"Morning."

She kissed my cheek.

Then... just stood there.

Quiet.

Too quiet.

"You're acting suspicious."

She looked away.

"I'm not."

"You definitely are."

A small smile appeared on her face.

"I have something to tell you."

My mind immediately raced.

"Did we forget an anniversary?"

"No."

"Did you buy another plant?"

She laughed.

"No."

"Then what is it?"

She reached into her pocket.

Pulled out a small white stick.

And placed it in my hand.

I frowned.

For exactly three seconds.

Then I looked closer.

Two pink lines.

My heart stopped.

"No..."

She nodded.

Tears filled her eyes.

"Yes."

I looked at her.

Then back at the test.

Then back at her.

"We're..."

She smiled through happy tears.

"We're having a baby."

For a moment...

The world disappeared.

No sounds.

No thoughts.

Just one overwhelming feeling.

Joy.

I laughed.

Then cried.

Then laughed again.

She laughed with me.

"You okay?"

I shook my head.

"Not even a little."

She wrapped her arms around me.

"We're really doing this."

I held her tightly.

"We are."

A few hours later—

We invited everyone over.

Richard arrived first.

Trying to look serious.

He failed the moment he saw us smiling.

"What's going on?"

Elena and Adrian walked in next.

"You two are smiling too much."

Adrian said.

"I don't trust it."

I looked at my wife.

She nodded.

I placed the tiny pair of baby shoes on the coffee table.

Nobody spoke.

Richard stared.

Elena covered her mouth.

Adrian blinked twice.

Then...

Richard whispered,

"Are those...?"

She nodded.

"We're having a baby."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Then Richard's eyes filled with tears.

"My grandchild..."

He couldn't finish the sentence.

He simply hugged his daughter.

Holding her tighter than ever before.

Elena was crying openly now.

Adrian smiled.

A real smile.

"Congratulations."

He said quietly.

Months ago...

This family had been falling apart.

Now...

They were growing.

Literally.

That evening—

After everyone had left—

We sat together on the porch.

She rested my hand gently on her stomach.

"It's still hard to believe."

She whispered.

I smiled.

"I already love them."

She looked at me.

"You don't even know if it's a boy or a girl."

"I don't care."

"As long as they're healthy."

She leaned against my shoulder.

"And loved."

I kissed the top of her head.

"They'll never have to fight for love."

She smiled.

"Because they'll grow up surrounded by it."

We looked up at the stars.

Thinking about the tiny life that had already changed ours forever.

Our greatest adventure...

Was only just beginning.
