"What exactly do you mean by that? Are you trying to tell me I stink?" Bai Xifeng snapped, her pride instantly triggered.
"Not at all. I am not saying you smell bad." Baishe clarified quickly. "Quite the opposite, actually. You have a very pleasant, unique scent."
"Oh... really?" Softened by the compliment, Bai Xifeng lifted her arm and tried to sniff her own shoulder.
"It is a wasted effort. Your sensory system is not as refined as a beast's, so you wouldn't be able to perceive it yourself." Baishe explained with a hint of amusement in his voice.
"Well, regardless of the smell, we've successfully completed our mission for the night!" Bai Xifeng said, clapping her hands together in satisfaction.
"I can no longer sense any presence behind us, the trackers must have finally admitted defeat. I am going to release my power now, but you should find a secluded area first." Baishe advised.
Bai Xifeng nodded in understanding. If she were to suddenly materialize out of thin air in the middle of a crowded thoroughfare, it would cause a riot of questions and unwanted attention. She did not need the whole city knowing she possessed such a high-level secret.
Once she reached a quiet side alley, Baishe deactivated the invisibility. Bai Xifeng checked her reflection and began walking toward the Bai Mansion. The sky was beginning to shift its hue, signaling the approach of dawn, and she knew she had to hurry.
"Before I head back, I should buy some decent food for myself and Xiao Li." Bai Xifeng thought to herself. "I'm willing to bet that whatever the kitchen 'prepares' for us tonight will be nothing but the cold leftovers from those witches back home."
She detoured to a nearby restaurant that was just starting its morning service. The savory aroma of spices hit her, and she ordered two whole roasted ducks—one for herself and one for her hardworking maid.
After paying for the meal, Bai Xifeng made her way back to the mansion, clutching the warm packages and feeling quite accomplished. She slipped through her secret entrance, shedding her male disguise and returning to her female appearance before sneaking back into her own courtyard.
