From Zero to Hero I

"Ahhh I remember the time you were born... A very unique child you were" Mother chuckled.

"What do you mean mama? What does unique mean?" The boy asked.

"You were, and still are, different from the others, you were born into this world with your eyes glowing" She explained. The boy stood there confused, as he didn't understand what his mother was talking about. He didn't feel different from others, everyone treated him the same and from the explanation he just got, he felt like he should've. His mother noticed the expression on his face and immediately knew that explaining this to him was pointless.

"Oh Xarius, you'll understand when you grow older" She claimed, as she ran her hand through his hair. "How about you go outside and play with your father?" She said.

"But papa is outside training his magic.... and I don't have any..." Xarius replied.

"Well, why don't you go outside and watch while I make dinner?" Mother smiled.

"I guess..." He replied. He walked out of the living room of their small cabin and through the door leading outside, as his father sat there on a rock meditating and trying to focus his mana. Xarius sat down on the floor across from his father, trying to get some entertainment but also trying not to interrupt him.

"What is it Xarius?" Father asked, still meditating.

"Well, mama told me to come out here because she's cooking dinner" He explained. Xarius' father got up and walked over to him, He could see the look in his son's eyes that he had something on his mind.

"What happened? Is it about the magic thing again?" he asked. Xarius looked up at him, surprised he knew exactly what he was thinking about.

"how-"

"You've been talking about it for the past couple of months, and I just took a wild guess" Father chuckled.

"Yeah..." He responded.

"You're only 6 Xarius, you'll soon know how to use your mana... You're just a late bloomer" He explained.

"I just don't understand why I have to be unique? Why can't I be like everyone else, just normal" Xarius asked.

"The real question is why do you have to be normal?" Father asked.

"I just feel like if I'm normal like everyone else, then maybe I'll be accepted and my magic would have developed already..." Xarius responded.

"That's not how things work... You'll understand once you get older my boy" He smiled.

"Boys! Dinner is ready!" Mother screamed from inside the house. Xarius walked with his father back into the house, him now curious about what his mother had said about his eyes. The family enjoyed the rest of their night, Xarius dozing to sleep knowing the fact that he was unique, but still not understanding why. It's been three years since that conversation had happened, he was more aware of the unique ability in his eyes and how he stood out from the rest. He'd spend days in his room trying to figure out how to activate his ability, what it was about, or how to use it, only coming out when there was food on the table or taking bathroom breaks.

"What're we gonna do about Xarius, Oteus?" Mother asked.

"I don't know Xarlena, maybe I-"

"I'll just go talk to him" She interrupted. She got up from the dinner table and walked towards his room, entering without knocking. His room was trashed with books and papers all over the floor while Xarius just sat at the edge of his bed facing the wall.

"Xarius you need to come out of this room... Me and your father are worried. He slowly tilted his head to the right locking eyes with his mother. His eyes glistened with a bright neon yellow color, in an instant his mother suddenly dropped to the floor not moving or even breathing.

"mom.... MOM!!" He yelled as he jumped out of bed to go check on her, his eyes reverting back to the original brown color they were.
