Seven Sins System Chapter 487. I Swear, This Is Why I'm Always Grumpy
Demons weren't known for being organized. They were usually driven by chaotic impulses, acting on their own whims or under the orders of a low-level demon lord. But this? This felt different, almost calculated. And that, more than anything, had me on edge.
"You're right," I said, my voice firm but thoughtful. "It's not the demons that worry me... it's how organized they were. They weren't just some ragtag group looking to cause chaos. They were specific in their mission, and I was the target."
"I can't imagine anyone on the mortal plane having the power to command demons with that level," my father mused. "Whoever this 'master' is, they're dangerous. You need to be careful."
"I am being careful," I replied, though I couldn't help but feel the sting of his caution. "I've handled worse than this before, Dad. I'm not some inexperienced kid."
He let out a heavy sigh. "I know you're capable, but this is different. These demons knew you and your power. That's not something to brush off. Whoever sent them knows more about you than we'd like, and that puts you at risk."
I could hear the concern in his voice, and despite my frustration, I knew he had a point. I didn't like the idea that someone out there had been watching me, gathering information, and sending demons after me with a clear purpose. It wasn't just a random attack—it was personal.
"I'm already working on it," I said, trying to reassure him. "Puriel and I are looking into the source of these white crystals. If we can figure out where they're coming from, maybe we'll get some answers about who's behind this."
"You're putting a lot of faith in Puriel's investigation. Do you trust her to find the source before things escalate?"
I frowned, the question catching me off guard. "I don't have a choice but to trust her. She's the only other being here who has the power to handle this. Besides, we're working together on this mission, whether I like it or not."
"I'm not saying you can't rely on her," my father said, his tone softening slightly. "But don't let her lead you blindly. You have instincts for a reason. Trust them. If something feels off, follow it. Don't wait for someone else to take the reins."
"I've been following my instincts," I snapped, more defensive than I intended. "That's why I'm staying here longer. I'm not going to get caught off guard. You taught me better than that."
"Good," he replied, his voice firm again. "You've always had a sharp sense for danger. Don't let anyone cloud your judgment. Not even a goddess."
I knew what he was implying. Puriel was powerful, sure, but she wasn't infallible. I couldn't let myself rely on her completely, and I couldn't afford to get caught up in her investigations without thinking for myself. My father had taught me that lesson early on—never depend too much on anyone, no matter how strong they seemed. It was good advice, especially in situations like this.
Then, my father shifted the conversation, his tone suddenly more casual. "So, I guess you're going to miss Asmo's birthday then?"
I paused mid-breath.
Asmo's birthday! How could I have forgotten?
The annual chaos of Asmodeus's birthday bash was legendary in the Shadow Realm, and missing it wasn't just a disappointment. Worse, Asmo had already taken my present, expecting me to be there.
"Crap, I can't believe I forgot," I muttered, frustration bubbling up again. "I'll still come. There's no way I'm skipping that. You know how he gets if I don't show up."
My father chuckled softly, but I could hear a hint of something else in his voice, fatigue, maybe? "He's already expecting you. But with everything going on in the mortal realm, I guess you've got bigger priorities."
I clenched my jaw. "I'll figure it out. I'm not going to miss it. No matter what's happening here, I'll be there."
"Hmm," Dad hummed, his voice softening again. "So, I guess we'll talk later then?" There was an odd tone in his voice, something uncharacteristic. It sounded almost… weak. Or was it disappointment?
I frowned, my irritation cooling for a moment. "Wait, are you saying you miss me?" I teased, trying to lighten the mood.
There was a pause, and then he spoke, his voice quieter than before. "Yeah, I miss you."
I raised an eyebrow, caught off guard. That wasn't something I expected from him. "Seriously?" I asked, confused but also slightly amused.
He sighed. "I need someone to do my work, Azrael. You're more efficient than my scribes."
I let out a groan, immediately regretting that I had asked. "There it is," I muttered, my irritation resurfacing. "You just miss me because I'm your backup. I swear, this is why I'm always grumpy."
But before I could complain further, my father shifted the conversation yet again, this time with a little too much cheerfulness. "Oh, and your sister is getting grumpier too, you know. She said you owe her a lot of fucks."
I grimaced, running a hand down my face. "Ugh… yeah, I'll deal with her when I get back."
Dad chuckled, clearly enjoying my discomfort. "Don't keep her waiting too long, Azrael. You know how she gets."
"Unfortunately, yes, I do," I replied with a sigh.
"Good," Dad replied, his voice lighter now. "Just make sure you don't get too tangled up in whatever Puriel's doing."
I knew he was right, but that didn't make the situation any easier to deal with. "I'll be careful," I assured him. "I'm not taking any chances. If anything feels off, I'll pull back."
"You'd better," he warned, his tone shifting to a more serious note. "I don't want to have to come up there and clean up your mess."
"You won't need to," I shot back, though I couldn't help but smirk. "I'm handling it, Dad. Don't worry."
"Good," he said, and I could hear the faint smile in his voice. "We'll talk more when you're back. Don't get yourself killed up there—at least not before Asmo's birthday."
I couldn't help but laugh at that. "Yeah, I'll try not to ruin the party by dying. Don't worry, I'll make it."
"Great," he said, his voice lightening for a brief moment. "Take care of yourself, Azrael."
We said our goodbyes, and I hung up, tossing my phone onto the counter.
