Chapter 31 - Scars

Scars

Morning found me as one of the students heading towards one of the many towers for my first class. It was snowing desperately but that did not prevent the students from chatting with each other outside it, or waiting for their friends in the white world. I greeted a few acquaintances then went into the tower. The inside was warmer but not by much; the morning was icy cold.

At the door to my class I was pleasantly surprised to bump into Celestine. "Hey," I grinned. "I didn't know you took this class too,"

Celestine smiled shyly, "you see it has been three months since we started so we were finally allowed to change classes," she told me.

"Uh," I nodded, "I didn't know there was that rule,"

Somehow that upset her, "you don't know anything," she grumbled. I was half expecting her to hit me but she just walked past me into the class. I just stood there with a frown. Since we didn't meet much Celestine has started being less free with me. In the past it was impossible for her to be this shy around me.

I sighed and walked into the Poetry class.

The class was half full, that was about the number of students taking the class. Celestine took a middle window seat and I sat beside her. She didn't glare at me like she would have done before we came to the academy, she just ignored me. I looked at her cold face curiously. Is the little princess maturing? She will get more difficult to handle wouldn't she? I sighed again and dropped my book on the table, leafing through it.

"Hmmm...?" I lifted my head as I felt that intense feeling of someone boring a hole in your head with their eyes and turned around to see Nuni glaring at me from the back seats. I quickly looked away. The teacher was a young man, in his twenties, wearing a long coat with furs at the cuffs and and collars. He had short cropped blue hair and held a staff he pointed at writings on the board. What a loser.

After classes me and the little princess sat on a bench in the park as we eat our sandwich watching the other kids play in the park. It had stopped snowing for some time now. Some students made kites, others a snowman or two, some competed with their powers too, dazzling the onlookers with their unbelievable gifts. One girl hovered in the air as she danced above the snow like a fairy, her blue dress fluttering in the air.

"They are entertaining," Celestine said.

I nodded. "You will do better,"

"My powers in this temperature? Freeze everyone to death?"

"You can control your powers better than that,"

"You were suppose to say something sweet you know?"

I fell silent. "You don't have to use your powers, your beauty is enough."

"That's sweet," Celestine said dryly, "you really think that?"

I frowned. I don't particularly like this new Celestine. Then I grinned mischievously. "No little p, I don't think so. You got to be honest right?"

"So you mean you can't tell me anything sweet that's honest lord Coldfire?"

"Coldfire?" I scoffed. "You are marrying into my side of the family,"

The little princess looked at me this time but I didn't stop watching the others in the park. "What's this about Sainty?" she asked quietly. "I know you enough to know when you are hinting at something,"

I was about to answer when I saw the last people I wanted to see in my life. Rea and Scars were coming towards us from across the park. I would have thought they had no business with me but the way Rea was looking my way with strong determination threw any doubt I had out of the window. Should I run? Or maybe bury myself on the bench and hope they weren't looking at me and they don't see me. I thought that but instead I sighed in resignation and braced myself for whatever life would throw at me.

"Hey lord Coldfire!" Rea said angrily. "Why have you been avoiding me?!!"

Celestine looked up at the girl curiously. Rea had done away with the borrowed yellow dress she attended the welcoming ceremony in and was currently wearing a dress the gray of the commoners. "I don't know what you are talking about," I said feigning indifference.

"Of course you do," Ms protagonist replied. "Anyway, this is my friend Scars Swornhalf. She's a noble too!"

Am I supposed to be excited by meeting a fellow noble? Isn't it the other way around since I meet them everyday while you only meet commoners a handful of times since you came here? But still, I studied her 'friend'; a tall skinny dark haired girl wearing black hoodie and pants, with a quiver hung on her back and a big silver bow in her hand. She had an aloof expression. Like she didn't care one bit about us. Knowing her from the novel she probably don't.

"Sainty who are these?" Celestine asked.

"Until today I only know the first one," I answered. "She's Rea, the one that topped the ranking board,"

"You helped her in the banquet didn't you?"

"And?"

"What's your relationship with her? You are not cheating on me with her are you?"

"Eh? Are you crazy little princess?"

"It's just a joke," Celestine smiled turning to Rea, "anyway what do you want with us?"

"Um," Rea froze. "Sorry, who are you?" It might look arrogant but the MC somehow made it sound cute and harmless.

Celestine narrowed her eyes angrily. "I am Celestine Coldfire...."

"The ice girl?!!" Rea said excitedly. "Scars look it's her everyone been talking about. She's the most powerful mage in our year!"

"Isn't the strongest mage prince Weiss?" Scars asked indifferently.

"Apart from him!"

"What's this about?" I asked.

"Isn't it because lady Coldfire defeated a third year?" Rea said, "she..."

"Shut your mouth!" Celestine snapped.

"Uh?" I turned to Celestine with a bad feeling. "Which third year was that?"

She just pouted and looked away.

"Nuni Woodtalk," Scars answered.

Celestine glared at her but the other girl didn't seen worried. My little princess beat up Nuni, why? What could have pit them against each other? Me? Did Celestine notice the way I avoid glasses girl and the way she looks at me? She did didn't she?

Agrr, is this a good or bad thing? But little princess you are so bad. You are not afraid of death.
