CHAPTER START---

Waking up after his brief nap on the train, Makarov sits up and rubs his eyes.

He opens them to see Oberon still reading the Guild Laws book.

They had a compartment to themselves, and while Makarov enjoyed the time to relax on the journey back to Magnolia, Oberon was determined to read his new book multiple times.

"I guess some Gale-Force Reading Glasses would be a wonderful gift for you, right?" Makarov says.

"What?"

"They're glasses that use magic so you can read faster. There are different types. Some can even let you read 8 times faster."

"Wow, yeah, those would be great!"

Makarov quirks a brow at the boy, then looks out at the midday sun, knowing they'd arrive any minute now.

"When we were walking through Era you looked amazed, but there wasn't anything special there. Heck, that place is tiny compared to Magnolia, and Magnolia is an ant compared to the capital, Crocus. And now you don't know about common Magic Items..."

"Before the attack, I never left the village," Oberon says casually, still reading and underlining some parts of the book. "My entire life was up there. Now, it's gone."

"Well, the world just got a lot bigger for you. Be sure to take your time and soak it all in."

"I plan to, while I'm mastering my Magic."

Makarov looks out the window to see some familiar mountains, knowing they were minutes away.

"Why are you studying that book so much?" Makarov asks.

Oberon looks at him as if he was a moron. "It's a book about the laws guilds have to follow. I thought you'd be happy I'm studying it, aren't you?"

Makarov laughs at the idea. "The only thing you need to follow is your heart, to add love and happiness to the world. That's what Fairy Tail members do. While they support each other as one big family, of course."

"Mhm," Oberon goes back to reading the book. "But if I get arrested, I can't practice magic, so I'll keep reading."

"Tch, next time I won't bother saying anything cool then..." Makarov pouts. 'The kid has a sharp mind and is very direct. That's good for a wizard, and even more so for a student. He just needs some time to lighten up a bit. As expected, after the week he's had.'

Minutes later, they exit the train onto the platform of Magnolia station.

Makarov is walking beside Oberon, who is slightly taller than him, and carrying a bag over his shoulder.

The moment they step out of the train station, Oberon freezes.

The vastness of Magnolia almost overloaded his brain.

All his life in a small mountain village, and now he was standing here looking out at an entire city.

Buildings and roads all about, rivers cutting through the city and bridges running over them.

It was much larger than Era, and they even had what looked to him like a massive church in the middle of it.

"Do you see that building down there at the very end of the city?" Makarov points into the distance.

"Not really," Oberon says.

"Well, over there is where our Guild Hall is, and behind it is a massive lake. We're the only guild in Magnolia so most of the jobs from this part of southeast Fiore comes to us. Phantom is in the Northeast, so they get some."

"I heard about them. They're the top guild in Ishgar."

Makarov leads them through the city. "Well, with how hard they press the matter of becoming stronger and constantly recruiting or swallowing up entire smaller guilds, it'd be a surprise if they weren't on top."

"If dad didn't tell me about you, I probably would have ended up there."

"No, you probably would have ended up at the Bureau of Magical Research, which is why I didn't want you talking about your Magic while we were in Era. They would have tried to make you into a living weapon."

"Really?" Oberon sounded horrified.

"Sadly, as much good as Magic can do, in the hands of monsters, it can be a horrific tool. It only amplifies all that we are, after all. Good becomes heroic, bad becomes heinous."

As they continue walking through the city, Oberon is amazed by the large buildings, and notices many citizens respectfully greeting them.

Well, Makarov, he was simply there, so they included him too.

"So how long does it take you to walk to the guild?" Oberon asks.

"Are you asking because I'm short?"

"Uh, well..."

"For your information, I could grow into a giant and get there in one step if I wanted to."

"Oh yeah, the Rune Knights guarding my hospital room called you 'The Giant of Fairy Tail'. I thought it was a joke after I saw you, so that's real?"

"It's my most famous Magic, 'Giant'."

Makarov raises a hand, magically enlarging his fist to the size of a carriage before shrinking it.

"Wow, can you teach me that?!"

"It's not quite that simple to learn. Anyone who wishes to learn it would first have to master Light Magic so your body can properly regulate the positive energy it demands to be flowing through you."

"Ok, so after I master Light Magic, got it," he says so casually it actually makes Makarov chuckle.

"It's not quite so simple, young man. The level of mastery I'm speaking of requires Light Magic to be your core Magic, the one you awaken naturally when your Magic first blooms."

"Oh, but it was..."

Makarov instantly stops walking, then turns to Oberon. "I thought you were some kind of Gravity and... well, you know, the other thing."

"Uh, well, yeah, but it's all the same Magic for me."

Makarov looks genuinely confused at that, then just turns and continues walking. "More questions that shall be answered when we get to my office."

As they're on the last stretch to the Guild Hall, a gorgeous and busty woman, seemingly in her mid-thirties, spots Makarov walking her way and waves excitedly at him.

"Hey Maki'! I haven't seen you in a while. You should come over tonight. I'll even make your favorite," she says while walking up.

"Sorry, my dear, but I have to make sure this young man has everything he needs and is taken care of." He gestures to Oberon. "But I will visit as soon as I can," he finishes with a wink.

"Awe, you're always looking out for them. How sweet." She leans down and ruffles Oberon's hair, much to his annoyance. "Alright, well, you know where to find me!"

"As if I'd forget you," Makarov says as they continue walking.

"Was that your wife?" Oberon asks, oblivious to what he had just witnessed.

"Uh, no."

"Oh, friend?"

"Something like that."

"Best friend?"

"Uh," Makarov sees the guild at the end of his long street and contemplates what he should do as they keep walking. "How old are you again?"

"8."

"Same as Laxus. Well then, you're old enough to join a guild, so you're old enough to know."

"Know what?"

"Well, you see, when you become a powerful and famous Wizard, beautiful women will enjoy your company, and spending time with you will make them happy. And it is a man's duty to make as many women happy as possible."

"Hmm," Oberon thinks about it for a moment. "Wait, that's stupid. If I'm famous, people will keep annoying me for pictures and stuff like they did to you back in Era. I don't want that!"

"Seriously, that's the only thing you took away from that?" Makarov gave him a slightly concerned look.

"Yeah, it was soooooo annoying stopping so you could talk to everyone who recognized you. That sucks!"

"Well, I'm sorry spending time with me is such a bother," Makarov sighs. "But for your information, I wasn't always like this. Up until I became guild master I was only known by name. There were no pictures of me for people to recognize. But becoming guild master then Wizard Saint ruined that...now I always have to look out for Kamera Lacrima."

"So you can be strong without people annoying you?"

"Yes, and I'd recommend it. In fact, that's what Gildarts does, and he's our Ace."

"Ace?"

"It means the strongest Wizard in a guild, aside from the master. Since I can't go on jobs I don't really count."

"Hmmm," they climb the steps to the guildhall, and Oberon sees the three-story structure resting at the edge of Magnolia.

A few other buildings were around it, but there was a noticeable gap between the guild hall and its neighbors. As if done on purpose.

"Wow," Oberon says as he sees the Fairy Tail emblem hanging proudly on the front of this building.

"Yes, this sight never gets old," Makarov says as he walks up to the door, leaving Oberon a few feet back, still taking in the building and emblem. "Welcome to Fairy Tail, your new ho—"

The door suddenly flies open and a blue-haired young man crashes into Makarov, sending the little man tumbling along with him all the way back to Oberon...
