Chapter 31 - Navigation is not a game

Shun looked at her with a slight frown remembering, all that the ghosts of his mother and brother said. He felt bad that they insulted her so much.

"Yes, I need to leave as soon as possible" Shun replied curtly, as he opened the door and walked out.

"Thanks for letting me sleep at your house" he added without turning around.

"Come back anytime" Silk said in a playful tone.

Shun grimaced and began walking faster. It wasn't that he didn't like what he had done with her last night, but that hallucination or whatever it was had affected him deeply.

'Let's see... I need a map and supplies for the trip. Then I'll go to a marine base to claim the rewards from Gally and Oyag. I'll also ask them for information from Eldorrago' Shun thought.

He noticed that most of the villagers were already awake and greeted him cheerfully.

Shun just nodded his head slightly, as he looked for a store to buy the things he needed.

The village wasn't very big, so there weren't many shops, he finally found a shop that had a dilapidated sign stating its name, [Cartographic Shop].

'I suppose this will do' Shun thought as he entered. As he opened the old wooden door, it emitted a loud creak, showing that it hadn't been changed in a long time.

The first thing he noticed upon entering this store, was many maps taped and hung all over the place. Then there were objects such as compasses and other items that Shun had never seen in his life. The store was full of dust.

Shelves with large stacks of books full of cobwebs also filled the place.

Shun had never seen such a messy and dirty place. He started to look for the counter. When he found it he approached it and noticed that behind a large pile of books, there was a person, he could tell thanks to his ability to sense the presence of people no matter how hidden or in the dark they were.

"Hello?" asked Shun trying to get the owner's attention.

Seconds passed and silence reigned in the shop, Shun could hear the sound of a pencil writing quickly on what he thought would be paper or something.

"Is anyone there?" asked Shun again in a louder tone.

"What!?" exclaimed the person behind the books startled by Shun's voice. Out of fright he gave a little jump out of his seat and hit the pile of books knocking it over. Shun had to dodge so the stack of books wouldn't crush him.

"Can't you see I'm busy-" Before he continued complaining he noticed Shun's appearance and his annoyed face changed to a beaming smile.

"¡Look who it is, Our great hero!" exclaimed the man of short stature, a balding crown, and circular glasses with some scratches.

"Sorry about the mess. I'm not used to receiving many customers. You know, no villager is interested in sailing and pirates rarely care about such a thing and just go out to sea without any preparation" added the man complainingly.

"I understand..." said Shun with a strange expression.

"Tell me what our hero wants, and I'll try to give you the best of the best!" said the little man with a big smile.

'He sure is excited...' thought Shun.

He still wasn't used to the villagers treating him like a hero.

"I needed a map" said Shun.

"A map?" asked the little man with a raised eyebrow.

"Of what part of the world? East Blue, North Blue, West Blue, or South Blue?" he asked again.

Before Shun could speak, he said again, "Well that is if you want to go to any of the four seas, or ¿Do you want to head for the Grand Line?"

Shun looked at the man without understanding him a word, the only thing he could have known was of the Grand Line, as it was a term widely used when the Pirate King died.

"What do you mean? I just want a map of the area..." said Shun.

"Don't underestimate navigation!" exclaimed the little man, scaring Shun a little.

'What's wrong with this old man, why is he so fond of maps? Well it's a map store...' thought Shun.

"Even though you're very strong, if you don't know how to navigate, how do you plan to reach other islands? All you'll end up doing is getting lost" the man said.

"I'll give you a quick explanation. We are in the Blues, specifically East Blue. There is also the North Blue, South Blue, and West Blue. To navigate the Blues you need a regular navigational compass and a map, however, navigating from one Blue to another is more difficult. The reason is because the 4 Blues are separated by Red Line and Grand Line, although well you must not know what the Red Line and Grand Line are" explained the little man with excitement in his voice.

Shun looked at him with a face of total incomprehension. He was able to keep up with the Blues but then got lost with the Red Line and Grand Line.

"If we're on the East Blue, give me a map here" Shun said with a headache, he still had the hangover.

"Now if we understand each other" said the man with a smile. Then he started looking through the drawers for a map.

"Here you go, although not all the islands of the East Blue are here, there are the main Kingdoms and most important marine bases, there is also our island" said the man as he put on the counter a map.

"Good" Shun said as he glanced at the map and rewrapped it.

"You'll also need a navigational compass and..." said the man as he bent down to look for something in the drawers.

"This!" Over the counter came a thud, in front of Shun now was a large stack of books.

Shun raised an eyebrow of incomprehension as he looked at the man.

Noticing Shun's stare, the man explained, "If you're going to sail hunting pirates, you'd better learn the basics of sailing. Here are the basics, then you'll have to study in-depth, the Grand Line is much more difficult to navigate, but don't worry about that now."

He explained to Shun taking it for granted that he would get to study with discipline.

Shun seeing the man's excited face nodded. Besides, money was no longer an issue, so buying some books was not a big expense.

"Let me see your navigational compass."

Shun without giving it much thought, from one of his pockets took out the old compass that was in bad shape.

"This is not a navigational compass, it's a generic compass. Besides it's junk, it's no good" said the man snatching the compass from him and throwing it aside.

"Isn't it the same thing?" asked Shun thinking that both terms referred to the same object.

"No, no," said the man shaking his head indignantly.

"Although they have many similarities and both serve for navigation, a navigation compass is more accurate for the task of navigation, pun intended. I won't go into all the technicalities" he added.

Shun nodded thankfully that the man did not start telling him the story of the navigation compass and generic compass.

"Here you go. It's one of the best, its operation is similar to the generic compass. In the books it explains everything better" he added as he pulled out a new and better quality navigation compass than Shun's old compass.

"Well..." said Shun as he grabbed the navigation compass it had some differences, but it was almost identical to a compass.

"Also take this generic compass. On land it's better to use this one" said the man as he handed Shun a new compass.

"How much will all this cost?" he asked as he took the compass.

"It's free. If it wasn't for you, I would most likely be dead, as my store makes very little money and I couldn't have paid Gally. So take it as a small thank you" said the little man with a smile.

Shun seeing the man's sincere thanks, felt a nice feeling in his being, but quickly suppressed it and hid it, "It's okay. By the way, which island with a marine base would you recommend me to go to?" he asked.

He decided to ask him, as this man convinced him that sailing was somewhat difficult, so it was better to have an expert's opinion.

At the question, a smile formed on the man's face, he unwrapped the map he had given Shun and pointed to an island with his finger, "Here, is the 16th Marine Division in the East Blue. It's a small island, on which there are only small marine barracks. It's about 5 days travel time from here."

"Okay thanks" Shun said nodding his head.

He walked out of the tent with more stuff than he had planned. A large stack of books followed behind him levitating. The map he put it in one of his pockets along with the generic compass and navigational compass.
