Chapter 4 - CHAPTER THREE: SCREENING 1

The uniform consists of a black collared white shirt, a black skirt, a peculiar black waistcoat that exposes the white shirt design and yet another thin layered coat that is somewhat like a coverlet, and this has short, white frilly arms,

I feel very excited as I turn around dramatically.

-I have never worn anything as grand as this-

However, I somewhat possess a memory of wearing something very similar to this... once before-

It's been two days and so far, we've only been fed and kept in our rooms,

-No progress whatsoever-

I've gotten to appreciate Taki as a loud, cheery and expressive individual, but that's all I know about her for now. Through our discourse, I've gotten to understand how terrifying beasts that I otherwise knew nothing about, really are.

She's conjured enough images to make me -almost- regret the path I've chosen.

"This isn't what I'd say is my style…" Taki comments simply, breaking into my thoughts.

I look her over.

She doesn't look a bit bad in this attire, on the other hand I feel rather too bony to be allowed the pleasure of fawning over my current appearance for long.

She instinctively brushes down her skirt, her face twitched in a scowl.

I shake my head,

"So what is…your style?"

She goes strangely quiet before intoning rather grimly;

"Silk and linen"

I regard her quizically,

"Where could you possibly have gotten that to wear?"

She appears to be an ordinary peasant just like me so...

"I haven't!...I just suppose I would look good in it"

She answers quickly, her face flushed.

I regard her in curiosity;

-obviously she's hiding something-

"Well, whatever...I think you look good in this too so..."

I say rather flatly as I meditatively look out the window which is right beside my bed.

I feel her boring holes into me with her eyes.

"You know, I'm rooting for you Camada..." She pauses,

"So root for me too!"

She is smiling cheerily.

-Where did this even come from?-

I smile; "Yeah yeah.."

I am interrupted as a Reverred barges in.

She takes a few minutes to scowl at us;

"Time for Screening 1...get out".

Of all the rank 4 Reverreds who have been put to monitor us, Rev Kesha is the most hateful.

I sigh to myself as I stand up from my bed.

-But I'd rather deal with her animosity than lose my life during this Screening-

**********

"I am Rev Waer…rank 2, placed before each of you are five weapons that you will use to defeat the series of monsters you will each face…"

She yawns, in boredom as she motions at the tables set before us ,

There are shudders and cries all around me, these 'weapons' are too miniscule to defeat anything with;

I regard the weapons trying hard not to give into the pressure of opting out of this,

-How possibly can I with absolutely no combat experience at all, use such pathetic weapons to defeat the terrible creatures Taki has taken the trouble to gist me about-

I regard Rev Waer unbelievably,

-Is she being for real right now?"-

Rev Waer, a rank 2 Reverred with a sleepy aura and apparently a close confidant of Rev Netyisha's, due to their exchange of quiet words at close intervals.

"You all know the purpose of this screening...to test your physical efficiency, productivity and..."

Rev Waer hooks in her statement and yawns,

"Whatever, I don't have anything to say again..."

Rev Netyisha sighs heavily at Waer's conduct.

"Thank you Rev Waer, I'll take it from here"

She gently pushes Waer asides and assumes the position at the centre of the uplifted podium.

"A dagger, an arrow, a broken sword , rocks and a magic stone…litsen well, there will be a series of five contests in Screening 1 in these contests…you will be required to use each of these weapons…without repeating usage of any…"

Rev Netyisha pauses and gazes at us emotionlessly,

She waits for this to sink in and sure enough there are gasps all around.

-Isn't this suicide-equivalent?-

I look round for Taki,

Her expression is serious and meditative.

"The magic stone…may or may not have a lucky charm…so it may or may not be efficient in your battle… that's a tip",

Rev Netyisha grins to herself,

-Is she thrilled by the thought of our suffering?-

"Alright!"

As her normal custom, she claps her hands twice,

And suddenly it is as if an invincible veil is torn off, the hall becomes larger and suddenly all around us are huge, horrible monstrosities all placed in individual cages,

"Okay..."

She looks around meditatively, then...

Her eyes rest on me,

"Let's have you go first"

-I vomit-
