Jane sat across from him with her notebook in her hands, curiosity all over her face. "Okay, let's try again. Where exactly are you from?"
Thor wiped his hands on a napkin and leaned back. Even in Jane's small living room, he sat straight like someone important. "I come from Asgard. It's not a place you'll see on your maps. It's far from this world, but still tied to it."
Jane frowned. "So… like another planet?"
Thor shook his head. "Not really. Asgard is a realm. There are many realms, all connected by Yggdrasil—the World Tree. Your world, Midgard, is one of those realms."
Darcy raised both eyebrows. "So you're saying you're basically an alien."
Thor looked at her for a moment, thinking about the word. "If that's what you call someone not from Earth, then yes. But I'm not only from another world. I am Thor, son of Odin, King of Asgard. I was meant to be his heir."
Jane's pen moved quickly as she wrote, but then she looked up. "Was?"
Thor's face darkened. He turned his eyes away, staring at the wall like he was remembering something painful. "My father cast me out. He took my power and sent me here, to live among mortals."
Erik crossed his arms, doubt in his eyes. "Why would your father do that if you're really who you say you are?"
Thor breathed out slowly, clearly not proud of the answer. "Because I was reckless. I let my pride rule me. My actions put my people in danger. Odin believed I needed to learn humility."
Jane stopped writing, her eyes softening. "So that's why you're here."
Thor nodded, his voice steady. "Yes. Without Mjolnir, I'm not what I was. But don't be mistaken—I am still Thor Odinson. And I will get my hammer back."
Darcy leaned her elbow on the couch arm and smirked. "Okay, let me get this straight. You're a god, from some kind of magical tree-world, grounded by your dad, and now you're hanging out in New Mexico with us?"
Thor actually gave a small smile, calm this time. "That is… a simple way of putting it. Yes."
Jane leaned in, her eyes focused on him. "If everything you said is true, what happens when you get your hammer back?"
Thor's gaze grew sharper, and his tone was sure. "Then you will see the power of the God of Thunder. And you will believe."
The next morning, the desert air was already warm, the sky a wide stretch of pale blue. Jane's van bounced along the dirt road, dust clouds rising behind its tires.
Jane sat at the wheel, her eyes fixed on the horizon. She barely blinked, her mind buzzing with questions. Beside her, Erik sat with his arms crossed, still looking like he regretted everything. Darcy lounged in the back seat, scrolling through her phone, while Thor sat upright, staring out the window with a serious look.
The silence in the van stretched until Darcy broke it. "Sooo, are we really just driving Space Viking here to the middle of nowhere because he says his magic hammer crash-landed?"
Jane tightened her grip on the wheel. "We picked up readings on the sensors last night. Something big hit. And it wasn't a meteor—I'd bet my research on it."
Erik sighed. "Jane, science doesn't care about bets. It could've been space junk, a military test, anything logical. But you're acting like—" he glanced at Thor "—like this man is telling the truth."
Thor didn't flinch. His voice was calm but steady. "You will see soon enough. Mjolnir calls to me. Even now, I can feel it."
Darcy smirked. "Okay, but if we get there and it's just a rock, I'm making you buy me tacos."
Thor turned his head slowly, giving her a puzzled look. "What is… tacos?"
Darcy grinned. "Oh, don't worry. You'll love them. Earth's greatest invention."
Jane couldn't help but smile faintly, but her eyes stayed sharp, focused. "We're almost there."
They turned the corner, and the desert opened up before them. But the land wasn't empty anymore. A huge crater scarred the sand, the ground blackened and rocks thrown aside as if something heavy had crashed down from the sky.
Thor leaned forward, eyes fixed on the sight. "Yes… this is where it fell."
But the crater wasn't untouched. Trucks were parked all around it, bright lights set up, fences already going up. Men in dark uniforms moved quickly, carrying gear and weapons. In the center, a large tent buzzed with equipment.
Jane hit the brakes, staring. "What is all this?"
Darcy squinted. "Looks like they built a base… already?"
Erik shook his head. "Government. They always move in fast when something like this happens."
Thor's jaw tightened as he stared at the crater. "They've taken what does not belong to them."
Darcy followed his gaze. "Wait… that thing under the lights, with everyone crowding around it—that's your hammer, isn't it?"
Thor's eyes locked on the shape in the dirt. Even from a distance, it stood out, the handle jutting up from the ground. His voice was steady.
"That is Mjolnir. My hammer."
He leaned closer to the glass, his expression hard. "And I will take it back."
Darcy sat back, chewing her lip as she kept her eyes on the crater. "Okay… so maybe we don't just drive straight in there with all those guys watching. We should… I don't know, wait until night? Sneak in or something."
Thor didn't answer right away, still staring at the hammer as if nothing else mattered.
Erik shook his head firmly. "No. Not we. You." He looked at Thor seriously. "If anyone goes near that place, it should only be you. They'll just throw the rest of us out—or worse."
Jane glanced at Thor, worry flashing across her face. "He's right. If we get caught in the middle of this, it'll be over before it even starts."
Thor finally turned toward them, his expression calm but determined. "Then I will go. When the sun falls, I will enter their camp and reclaim what is mine."
Darcy raised her eyebrows. "Wow. You make it sound like some kind of medieval quest."
Thor didn't smile. His eyes returned to the crater. "For me, it is."
