Following the long sloping path, Jiang Fang hurried down toward the parking lot, her steps light and quick like a startled deer.
Jiang Fang had just graduated from university last year. She studied at a third-tier college in the capital. After graduation, she wanted to stay in the city, but couldn't find a decent job. Later, with her uncle's help, she managed to get into a film and television company.
Now, Jiang Fang worked as a junior field assistant on the 'Full House' production crew.
A "field assistant", or scene runner, is part of the logistics and support team in a TV drama crew.
Their main responsibilities include helping the production assistants maintain order on set, managing on-site logistics, and coordinating people and equipment under the direct supervision of the production manager. They take care of clothing, food, lodging, transportation, and all the everyday details that keep filming running smoothly.
In other words, the field crew is the production's caretakers. Every film set has several of them; their rank isn't high, but their role is indispensable.
As for a field assistant, to put it plainly, it's a helper to the helpers. In other words, the one who runs errands and does the grunt work.
But Jiang Fang was very content with this so-called "errand job." Many people wanted to get into the entertainment industry but couldn't. If not for her uncle, who was connected to the showbiz circle, she would probably be like many of her classmates, waiting tables or washing dishes, struggling just to make ends meet.
At least she had a dream, right? And whenever she told others that she was working on the 'Full House' crew, they would look at her with pure envy. After all, she got to see big celebrities every day!
Precisely because she understood how rare this opportunity was, Jiang Fang worked extra hard. She might be small and slender, but her energy was no less than that of the male crew members.
Plus, she had the advantage of being a woman, polite, quick-witted, and with a sweet tongue, which allowed her to occasionally exchange a few words with stars like Lu Chen and Chen Fei'er.
Jiang Fang's dream wasn't extravagant. She simply hoped that one day she could become a full-fledged field coordinator. That position paid much better, and it might even open doors to higher positions in the industry.
Pushing herself to move faster, Jiang Fang ran into the parking lot, grabbed a small crate of bottled water from one of the crew drivers, and started back up the slope toward the Seaview Terrace (Wanghai Platform) where filming was taking place.
She picked up her pace along the steps.
Ahead of her, there was a group of people who clearly weren't tourists. Some carried camera bags, others had light reflectors, and there were six or seven men in black suits and white shirts walking in formation.
These men in suits, all looking stern and serious, surrounded a tall, slender young man wearing dark sunglasses. They took up nearly the entire width of the pathway as they climbed.
Jiang Fang didn't pay much attention to these details. She came running up from behind, and seeing the group blocking most of the path, she tried to squeeze by along the narrow edge of the drainage channel.
She was moving quickly, but just as she reached the small plaza below Seaview Terrace, her foot slipped. Losing her balance, she stumbled to the left, almost colliding with the tall young man who had just stepped up.
"何をしている!"
One of the men in black beside the young man suddenly shouted angrily in Japanese. His face darkened as he quickly stepped forward to block Jiang Fang's path and, without hesitation, shoved her hard with both hands.
"Ah!"
Jiang Fang hadn't expected it at all. She was small and light, while the man's push carried a lot of force. She was sent flying backward, crashing heavily onto the ground several steps away. Her head hit the stone wall behind her with a loud thud.
The impact wasn't immediately fatal, she didn't lose consciousness, but the skin at the point of contact split open, and bright red blood began to trickle down her face.
Overwhelmed by pain, she let out a cry of agony.
The man who had shoved her was clearly stunned by what he'd just done. He hadn't expected such a serious result.
The tall young man stopped walking and hesitated.
Another man in a suit leaned in and said something softly to him, then walked over toward the fallen Jiang Fang.
"What are you doing?!"
"Jiang Fang's been hit!"
"Quick, go check!"
The shouts came from above, several crew members from the 'Full House' set had heard Jiang Fang's scream. Curious, they looked down from the terrace just in time to see her lying on the ground, blood running down her forehead.
The crew members instantly exploded in outrage!
Most of them were hot-blooded young men who got along well with Jiang Fang, and seeing her get assaulted like that filled them with fury. How could they possibly stand by and do nothing?
Several members of the production crew immediately rushed down the slope.
Seeing this sudden commotion, the suited man who had been walking toward Jiang Fang quickly stepped back. He and his companions closed ranks around the tall, slender young man, forming a protective wall with wary expressions on their faces.
Within moments, the crew members arrived at the scene. One of them hurriedly helped Jiang Fang to her feet, while two others shouted angrily at the opposing group, demanding an explanation. Meanwhile, more people from the production team came running after hearing the noise.
The atmosphere at the scene turned tense and explosive. Four or five men in suits blocked the path, standing firmly in front of the tall young man to prevent the angry crew from getting closer while trying to retreat.
"They're Japanese!"
"Those motherf***ing Japanese guys hit Little Fang!"
"Call the police! Don't let them get away!"
When they realized the group were Japanese, the production crew became even more enraged, absolutely refusing to let them leave.
But the men in suits weren't pushovers. Seeing themselves surrounded, they struck first.
"Ah!"
"Fight!"
"Beat these bastards to death!"
In the blink of an eye, chaos broke out, a full-on brawl erupted between the two sides. Tourists nearby scattered in panic to avoid getting caught up in the fight, while others lifted their phones and cameras to record the scene.
There were about the same number of people on both sides, but the men in suits clearly held the advantage. They were well-trained, fast, and ruthless. Within half a minute, several crew members were already knocked to the ground.
The young production workers had plenty of passion but lacked real fighting experience. Their punches were wild and uncoordinated, so they quickly fell behind.
However, as the saying goes, "a flurry of wild punches can still take down a master." Amid the chaos, one of the suited men got careless and took a direct punch to the face. The corner of his eye instantly swelled and turned black and blue.
The pain enraged him. With a furious shout, he spun and lashed out with a roundhouse kick, slamming his foot into a crew member's chest and abdomen, sending the man flying backward.
Having landed a clean hit, the suited man didn't stop. His killing intent flared as he lifted his leg again, swinging another brutal kick toward the nearest crew member, this time aimed directly at the man's head.
Given the force behind that kick, if it connected, the consequences would be disastrous.
The crew member saw the danger coming but was too slow to dodge, his reflexes simply weren't enough.
Thud!
At that critical instant, a figure suddenly darted forward, appearing right between the two sides. An arm shot up, blocking the violent kick just in time.
The crew member who had narrowly escaped injury gasped in shock, "Lu Chen!"
The one who had saved him was none other than Lu Chen himself!
