The ground didn't just split. It detonated.
A geyser of molten rock and superheated steam erupted where Ye Chen had been standing a fraction of a second before. He threw himself backward, taking Xiao Mei down with him as a shower of liquid magma rained over the cracked volcanic crust.
"Don't breathe the steam!" Li Rong shouted, her twin-bladed dao flashing as she deflected a chunk of falling, red-hot slag away from Yue's flank. "It'll cook your lungs in your chest! Move for the high ridge!"
The Ashen Peaks were waking up. The trial wasn't a static arena; the entire mountain range was a living, breathing forge of pure, unadulterated Yang energy, and it was violently rejecting their presence.
Ye Chen pushed himself up, his muscles screaming. The ambient heat of the environment was an absolute nightmare for his current state. The Celestial Key in his chest, already overloaded and unstable from the transit array, began greedily drinking in the environmental fire.
His vision swam with golden sparks. The veins in his neck bulged, glowing a terrifying, translucent yellow.
"Ye Chen!" Xiao Mei grabbed his arm, instantly channeling her Yin to suppress the heat, but she gasped in pain. The air was so saturated with fire that her freezing mist evaporated an inch from her skin.
"I'm fine," Ye Chen lied through gritted teeth, hauling her to her feet. "Run!"
They sprinted across the shattering earth. Behind them, fissures chased their heels, swallowing the landscape into a sea of bubbling magma.
Li Rong led the way, moving with terrifying, acrobatic speed. She didn't fear the fire; she seemed to dance with it. Her crimson robes whipped through the ember-choked air, her amber eyes scanning the shifting terrain with practiced ease.
"Up here!" Li Rong commanded, leaping onto a massive, jutting spire of black obsidian that hovered precariously over a rising lava lake.
Yue followed gracefully, her silver Qi forming a sleek aerodynamic shield that parted the falling ash. Ye Chen grabbed Xiao Mei by the waist and forced one last, agonizing burst of Yang into his legs, vaulting them both onto the obsidian ledge just as the ground beneath them collapsed into the fiery abyss.
Ye Chen hit the hard stone and immediately collapsed to his knees, violently coughing up a mouthful of blood that sizzled and steamed on the black rock.
"Ye Chen!" Xiao Mei dropped beside him, her face completely pale.
His core was critical. The heat radiating off his skin was so intense it was warping the air around him. The Key was a runaway furnace, absorbing the Trial of Fire's ambient Yang and trapping it inside his mortal shell.
"His meridians are melting," Yue stated, kneeling swiftly on his other side. She didn't hesitate. She grabbed his right wrist, her silver lotus hairpin glowing as she drove her refined, glacial Yin into his pulse point.
"It's not enough!" Xiao Mei cried out, pressing both her hands against his chest, right over the glowing jade. She pushed every ounce of her untamed frost into him, tears of sheer frustration and fear pooling in her dark eyes. "The mountain is feeding the Key! We're fighting the entire environment!"
Standing at the edge of the spire, Li Rong watched the frantic exchange. Her playful smirk was entirely gone, replaced by sharp, calculating intensity. She saw the absolute, uncompromising devotion in Xiao Mei's eyes, and the complex, undeniable resonance binding Ye Chen to the silver-haired Guardian.
He is the anchor, Li Rong realized. They revolve around him, and he burns himself alive to keep them safe.
"You can't cool him down if you're standing inside an oven," Li Rong said, spinning her twin dao into a reverse grip.
She walked over and knelt directly in front of Ye Chen, her face inches from his. He looked up at her, his amber eyes clouded with agonizing heat.
"I don't have Yin Qi, boy," Li Rong whispered, a fierce, untamed grin spreading across her lips. "I cultivate the Scorched Earth mantra. I can't put out your fire."
She reached out and boldly clamped her hands directly over Ye Chen's shoulders, ignoring Xiao Mei's warning shout.
"But I can eat the mountain's," Li Rong declared.
A violent vortex of crimson Qi erupted around Li Rong's body. She didn't push energy into Ye Chen; she pulled. She acted as a living lightning rod, drawing the oppressive, suffocating ambient Yang of the Second Gate away from Ye Chen and funneling it entirely into her own meridians.
The suffocating heat pressing down on the spire vanished, drawn into Li Rong like water down a drain.
"Now!" Li Rong barked, her amber eyes glowing like hot coals. "I'll keep the environmental fire off him! Cool his core, sparrow!"
Freed from fighting the mountain's ambient heat, Xiao Mei and Yue's combined Yin flooded Ye Chen's system.
It was a terrifyingly intimate circuit. Li Rong shielded them from the outside, while Yue provided the refined framework, allowing Xiao Mei's deep, emotional resonance to plunge straight into Ye Chen's heart and soothe the raging Celestial Key.
Ye Chen gasped, his back arching as the golden glow beneath his skin finally receded to a steady, calm emerald pulse. He slumped forward, his forehead coming to rest heavily against Xiao Mei's shoulder.
"I've got you," Xiao Mei whispered fiercely, burying her face into his neck, her hands trembling as she held him. She shot a complicated, grudging look over Ye Chen's shoulder toward Li Rong. "Thank you."
Li Rong broke the connection, exhaling a plume of white-hot steam. She rolled her shoulders, looking incredibly energized by the massive influx of ambient fire. She flashed a wicked wink at Xiao Mei. "Don't thank me yet, little sparrow. I fully intend to collect on this debt."
Before Xiao Mei could snap back, the obsidian spire shuddered violently.
Yue stood up, her silver aura flaring into a defensive dome. She looked toward the narrow land bridge connecting their isolated spire to the rest of the mountain path.
Emerging from the smoke and falling embers were four massive, iron-plated hounds, their eye sockets burning with violet fire. But they weren't alone.
Walking slowly behind the pack was a man wearing the charcoal robes of the Shadow Sect, dragging a hooked chain that sparked against the stone.
"The Vanguard survived the transit array," Yue said, her voice dropping to a whisper.
Li Rong stepped forward, licking her lips as she raised her twin dao, the crimson Qi rippling off her blades.
"Good," Li Rong purred, standing side-by-side with Ye Chen as he slowly rose to his feet. "I was just starting to warm up."
