Chapter 15 - Chapter 15 The Chain and the Spark

The hooked chain whipped through the falling ash like a striking viper.

Before Ye Chen could step forward, a blur of crimson intercepted the blow. Li Rong's twin-bladed dao sparked against the heavy iron links, the impact ringing out over the roar of the magma below.

"Keep the pups busy, silver!" Li Rong barked to Yue, a feral grin spreading across her face. "The big one is mine!"

She didn't wait for a response. Energized by the oppressive heat of the Ashen Peaks, Li Rong launched herself directly at the Shadow Sect Vanguard. Her blades became a whirlwind of crimson fire, forcing the heavy-armored man back toward the narrow land bridge.

The four iron-plated hounds lunged simultaneously, their violet eyes locked onto Ye Chen.

"Stay close to me," Ye Chen told Xiao Mei, grabbing the shattered hilt of his broken iron saber.

"I'm not leaving your side," Xiao Mei replied instantly. She stepped back-to-back with him, her palms glowing with a fierce, freezing azure mist.

Yue floated above the jagged stone, her silver robes untouched by the soot. With a flick of her wrists, a dozen needles of compressed lunar Yin shot through the air. They pierced the joints of the two leading hounds, freezing the corrupted marrow inside their iron-plated legs. The beasts collapsed, their momentum sending them skidding off the edge of the obsidian spire into the boiling lava lake below.

But the remaining two hounds vaulted over their falling packmates, jaws snapping toward Xiao Mei's throat.

"Ye Chen!" Xiao Mei called out, pushing her Yin Qi backward into his spine.

He didn't hesitate. He pivoted on his heel, catching her extended hand. The moment their skin met, the familiar, addictive rush of Dual Harmony locked their meridians together. Guided by Xiao Mei's cooling anchor, Ye Chen funneled a concentrated burst of golden Yang straight into his broken saber hilt.

A blade of pure, blinding light erupted from the broken iron. With a single, fluid arc, Ye Chen severed the heads of both hounds in mid-air. The corrupted beasts dissolved into black ash before they even hit the stone.

"Show-offs!" Li Rong laughed from the edge of the bridge.

She parried a crushing overhead strike from the Vanguard's chain, spinning under his guard to slash her dao across his chest plate. But the Vanguard didn't flinch.

"You think you are the only one who can eat the mountain's fire, rogue?" the Vanguard hissed.

He slammed his palm against his own chest. The corrupted runes on his armor flared purple, and the hooked chain suddenly ignited with black, corrosive flames. He whipped the chain in a massive, horizontal sweep that caught Li Rong off guard. The heavy iron struck her ribs, sending her tumbling backward across the spire.

"Li Rong!" Ye Chen shouted.

The Vanguard didn't pursue her. His eyes locked onto the emerald glow beneath Ye Chen's shirt. He spun the flaming chain, launching the wicked, jagged hook directly at Ye Chen's chest to tear the Key free.

It moved too fast to dodge.

But it never reached him.

Xiao Mei threw herself in front of Ye Chen, catching the black, flaming chain with her bare hands.

"Xiao Mei!" Ye Chen roared in terror.

The black fire roared, trying to consume her flesh. But Xiao Mei's dark eyes were bottomless wells of absolute defiance. She didn't flinch. She poured every drop of her pure, untamed Yin directly into the metal. The azure frost violently clashed with the black fire, shrieking as the extreme temperature shift shocked the iron.

Within two seconds, the heavy chain froze solid, covered in a thick layer of blue ice.

"Now, Ye Chen!" she screamed.

Ye Chen lunged forward, channeling the absolute maximum output of his stabilized Yang into his fist. He punched the frozen chain.

The brittle, super-cooled metal shattered into a thousand pieces of icy shrapnel. The kinetic shockwave traveled up the remaining links, striking the Vanguard squarely in the chest. The armored man was blasted backward, his feet slipping on the slick obsidian edge. With a final, furious curse, he plummeted backward into the molten abyss.

Silence fell over the spire, broken only by the bubbling of the lava.

Ye Chen immediately dropped his broken hilt and grabbed Xiao Mei's hands. The palms were red and blistering from the sheer friction of stopping the chain.

"You idiot," Ye Chen breathed, his voice thick with emotion. He pulled her against his chest, his hands trembling as he wrapped his arms around her. "You could have lost your hands. You could have died."

"I told you," Xiao Mei whispered, burying her face in his neck, her own hands gripping the fabric of his shirt as if afraid he would vanish. "I'm not letting them touch you. Ever."

For a long moment, the rest of the world ceased to exist. There was only the steady beat of his heart against hers, the scent of rain and mountain pine clinging to her hair despite the ash, and the overwhelming realization of how deeply their souls were tying themselves together.

"Well, aren't you two just adorable?"

Li Rong's teasing voice broke the spell. She was sitting on a boulder, holding her bruised ribs with one hand and leaning on her dao with the other. A wicked, knowing smirk played on her lips. "I hate to interrupt the wedding vows, but the mountain is collapsing."

Ye Chen looked up. The Vanguard's death had triggered a violent reaction in the array. The obsidian spire they stood on was cracking, massive fissures glowing red-hot beneath their boots.

"The entrance to the Second Trial is in the cliff face ahead," Yue said, gliding down beside them, her violet eyes betraying a hint of urgency. "We have ten seconds before this rock sinks."

"Run!" Ye Chen grabbed Xiao Mei's hand, securely lacing his fingers through hers.

The four of them sprinted across the crumbling land bridge, leaping over widening gaps of molten rock. They dove into a massive, yawning cavern in the side of the volcano just as the entire spire behind them collapsed into the lava lake with a deafening roar.

They hit the cavern floor, gasping for air.

As soon as they crossed the threshold, a heavy stone slab slammed down behind them, sealing them inside the pitch-black mountain.

Instantly, the walls flared to life, illuminated by thousands of glowing red crystals. The heat here wasn't oppressive; it was intoxicating, carrying the sweet, heavy scent of burning sandalwood.

At the center of the cavern stood a massive, perfectly polished mirror made of red glass, framed by twin statues of a dragon and a phoenix.

A voice, warm and dangerously seductive, echoed from the glass.

"Welcome to the Forge of the Heart. To pass the Second Gate, the Key-bearer and his chosen anchor must face the Mirror of Desires. Drop your Qi. Drop your secrets. If a single lie exists between your souls, the forge will burn you to ash."

Xiao Mei's grip on Ye Chen's hand suddenly tightened to the point of pain. He looked down at her.

For the first time since the Shadow Sect attacked, Xiao Mei looked genuinely terrified.
