Chapter 661 - What Continued

The doors closed with far more weight than necessary.

Kael heard three locks slide into place behind them, two more in the corridor, and a few seconds later a succession of more distant mechanisms answered through the walls of the Reconstruction Archive.

It was not a simple attempt to stop them from leaving that room.

The entire complex was being isolated, section by section, exactly as it had done thousands of times before whenever it concluded that the reconstruction had strayed too far from what it was supposed to be.

The man in the chair was breathing quickly.

"No."

The word came out low.

Almost childlike.

Seraphine immediately stepped in front of him.

"Look at me."

He couldn't.

His eyes were fixed on the dark window.

The figure wearing Corven's face remained on the other side of the glass, motionless and perfectly composed, while white lines began appearing around the chair.
