Reze stared outside of his metallic enclosure, what was previously a cacophony of cement and steel was now replaced with a symphony of the natural world.
The doors of the train opened,
"You have now arrived at ...."
The voice to indicate his arrival had cut off due to one of the plethora of minute issues in the trains mechanism, likely caused by the malfunction which ended him up here.
A shroud of light blue tinted mist flowed into Reze's compartment, causing him to shuffle backwards not noticing the unconscious body behind, resulting in a trip backwards with his arms extended behind him and his legs making an arch over the body.
It all happened so fast that Reze couldn't process it, he hadn't even had time to process even one of the numerous emotions and sensations he had felt in the moments leading up to what he assumed would be his death.
He sat there for a few more moments as his gaze panned one hundred and eighty degrees Infront of him
The sight was like a serene warzone, with bodies lain in disorder and order simultaneously.
The passengers who remained seated all fell over on each other with the occasional one or the other falling out of the seat, but they were relatively unharmed. The passengers who remained standing however, were not so lucky.
This was due to no fault of their own however, as there were never enough seats in the bustling metropolitan city Reze was from.
Some passengers had blood leaking from various locations of their bodies and limbs twisted in ways they shouldn't be.
To Reze, it was terrifying, yet he couldn't look away.
An eerie sight of bodies laid symmetrically on each side of the train with more, disfigured bodies set in the middle opposed him.
The expression on Reze's face changed from a slightly open mouthed awe to a closed, slight grin, like a child waiting to play with a new toy or when a hoarder finds a use for an item they had held onto for years.
Although the weight of the situation had already dawned on him, this curious exhilaration pushed him through it.
Getting up slowly, buying more time to process his surroundings, Reze positioned himself away from the open door and placed his thumb on the mans wrist.
"He's alive" Reze whispered
before carefully getting up and avoiding accidentally stepping on the body after proceeded to move the body off to the side of the train opposite to the open doors.
Cautiously stepping around the least injured bodies, he looked for and treated the most injured bodies first.
"At least they're asleep" he said calmly
before snapping their dislocated limbs back then ripping off bits of clothing belonging to the person he was helping to patch up their bleeding if they had any.
Reze was so immersed in patching up the injured that he hadn't noticed the advancement of haze, which had now enveloped about eighty percent of the compartment.
"They seem to be alright "
he whispered while glancing at the passengers who were now immersed in mist, before letting a nervous chuckle slip while reaching out the tip of his index finger into the mist with his eyes gently shut.
It felt as if he had dipped his finger into cool water, but there was only slightly more resistance to movement than air.
He pushed the rest of his fingers, then his hand, and then his entire body into the mist, and once fully immersed the blue tint of the mist subsided.
Trying to breathe in this mist felt like trying to breathe when someone had a loose but firm grasp on his neck, Reze ran his fingers across his throat in a gentle choke as his gaze impulsively strayed to the window.
he let his arm drop from his neck as he stepped closer to the window in an attempt to observe the sky.
The arm he had recently dropped reached to grasp onto the window sill as he leaned over a seated unconscious body to get a better view.
Squinting his eyes past the canopy of gigantic trees, overgrown ferns and multicolored fauna, he saw the reemergence of the blue tint with its intensity growing the farther his gaze reached, sitting on top of the canopy like a calm ocean floating in the sky.
Reze approximated that the haze did not allow more than a half a mile of vison, after which he tried to observe how far he could see in front of him.
The inquiry was halted instantly by the realization that those same ferns and mile long trees which majorly obstructed his vison of the sky are even more of an issue while trying to look at something on the ground level, as the smaller trees and human sized fungi were now added to the mix which made it almost imposable to see more than a few dozen meters.
Now giving up on the idea of being able to breathe easy, Reze let out a deep exhale which he now had to compensate for immediately with multiple deep breaths, and got back to patching up the remaining injured which now took Reze significantly longer as he had to take breaks in between sufferers.
Reze monopolized off the few meters of space in his compartment unobstructed by mist dragging bodies out of the mist to patch their injuries without having to take several minutes to rest between each sufferer.
"That should be the last of them,"
He said while letting out another deep sigh, followed by a frustrated
"Goddammit,"
as he followed up with several deep breaths, now fully consumed by this otherworldly air, realizing he can never breathe easy again.
