Volume 2 Chapter 77: Resistance (Conclusion)

Hour 11 after the fall of the Ghidorah's Wings.

Humanity can now confirm that the Ghidorah's Wings are no longer a threat. Victory is assured.

Although the Wings destroyed six major metropolitan areas—Yanjing, Baekje, Shengjing, Chang'an, Chuan-Yu, and Jiangcheng, along with 88 cities within them—and there are still 26 of them remaining, most are heavily injured.

Even if they wanted to accelerate and evade human weapons like the first wave of Ghidorah's Wings did, they no longer have the strength to do so.

At this point, the Ghidorah's Wings cannot break through humanity's defenses:

To the south, the Pearl River Delta, Macao, and Rongcheng, fortified with coastal defenses originally meant to stop Godzilla, boast electromagnetic cannon deployments far surpassing those of hastily built inland defenses or even those in Europe and America.

To the north, vast uninhabited regions are of no interest to the Ghidorah's Wings.

To the east, the Far East has already been destroyed, and North America is protected by the dense electromagnetic cannon defense network at the Bering Strait.

To the west, the smaller defensive zones of the Middle East and Europe mean their electromagnetic cannon networks are extremely concentrated, and the mountainous terrain of Europe is a nightmare for the laser-based attacks of the Ghidorah's Wings.

The Ghidorah's Wings are effectively boxed in. Divided into four groups, they have no chance of breaking through these defenses.

Military leaders across the globe have declared victory in what will likely go down as the second-largest war in human history. Despite the deaths of millions and the destruction of countless cities, humanity has emerged from the brink of extinction and survived.

In underground command centers, officials began discussing plans for resuming normalcy and returning to production. The fighting was over; they wanted to announce it as a triumphant victory.

"We won!"

The thought echoed in everyone's minds.

"We defeated the monsters!"

Humanity, in their hearts, cheered loudly:

"The catastrophe is over. Against the Ghidorah's Wings, we have prevailed."

Next, humanity would turn its attention to Godzilla.

Against the Ghidorah's Wings, humanity had won.

Or had they?

In the East Asia Monster combat command base, observers noticed something unusual about the behavior of the Ghidorah's Wings.

Those that had been furiously advancing mere moments ago suddenly began retreating.

"They're… withdrawing?"

"Commander, the Ghidorah's Wings on the southern Pearl River Delta front have pulled back. They're retreating. Are they trying to escape to safety?"

Moments ago, these creatures had been relentlessly attacking the electromagnetic cannon defenses in the region. Now, they were turning around, heading back in the direction of Yanjing, where they had first landed.

"The northern ones too!"

In the Siberian tundra, the only relatively unscathed Ghidorah Wing abandoned its hunt for cities and began flying south.

Reports poured in from Europe and North America:

"The western and eastern Ghidorah's Wings have also pulled back from the Volga River defense line and the Bering Strait defense line, retreating along their original paths."

It wasn't just one or two locations. All Ghidorah's Wings were withdrawing. It seemed as though they had no intention of continuing their assault on human cities and were regrouping.

"All the Ghidorah's Wings are retreating. Are they giving up the fight?"

Confirmation came from all regions. The Ghidorah's Wings were retreating across the board. The monsters had finally decided to stop their relentless attacks.

"This makes things tricky. Without the electromagnetic cannons, we'll have to rely on nuclear missiles to slowly take them down, which could take several days. This will be tough for the shelters."

While victory was inevitable, the timeline for achieving it suddenly stretched far into the future, aligning more with humanity's original estimates.

"There's no helping it," someone said.

Humanity had no way to force the Ghidorah's Wings to continue their assault. If they wanted to retreat, the only option was to rely on nuclear strikes to gradually wear them down over days or even weeks. Thousands—if not tens of thousands—of nuclear weapons would need to be deployed to kill them all.

This situation, in fact, matched humanity's initial expectations.

They had assumed the Ghidorah's Wings, after landing, wouldn't attack so recklessly—throwing themselves at electromagnetic cannon fortifications with suicidal determination. Instead, they had expected a drawn-out war of attrition, where the creatures would avoid danger zones and spread across the globe.

That the Ghidorah's Wings had ceased their attacks was disappointing, but not disastrous. The scenario was now playing out as originally envisioned.

Humanity would slowly bleed the Ghidorah's Wings dry with nuclear strikes while using drones and unmanned vehicles to harass them. The war of attrition was the best course of action.

Or so they thought.

Three hours after the Ghidorah's Wings began retreating, something unexpected occurred: two groups of the creatures merged.

In northern East Asia, amidst the ruins of Yanjing, the Ghidorah's Wings from Siberia met with those retreating from the Pearl River Delta.

Originally, these two groups had a combined total of 20 creatures. Now, only 13 remained—some severely injured.

The Wings folded their massive forms, landing amidst the wreckage. Three of them began intercepting incoming nuclear missiles with lasers, while the remaining 10 scoured the debris, searching for something.

They found it. What they sought were the remnants of the electromagnetic cannons—the shattered metallic wreckage.

The towering creatures, over 200 meters tall, lowered their heads to the ruins, their massive jaws opening and closing as they devoured the metallic debris.

"Are they… feeding?"

It didn't take long for humanity to realize what was happening.
