Volume 2 Chapter 76: Resistance (Part 2)
The remaining six railguns took aim at the heads of the incoming Ghidorah's Wings, which had already broken the sound barrier and were racing toward them.
Millions of capacitors discharged simultaneously. At the tips of the railguns, electricity pierced the atmosphere, releasing dazzling arcs of light. With the eruption of a powerful electromagnetic field, the projectiles were propelled forward, accelerating to speeds exceeding hundreds of Mach.
In an instant, the projectiles reached their peak velocity, glowing brightly with the energy of their sublimated rails. The shots from the six railguns found their targets among the Ghidorah's Wings, with two projectiles successfully striking their heads.
Three of the monstrous wings plummeted from the sky. Of the original four that approached, only one remained airborne.
The lone remaining Ghidorah's Wings retaliated, unleashing its devastating breath to obliterate the last of the operational railguns. It continued its rampage, wreaking havoc across the surrounding city. However, while it was focused on destruction, nuclear fireballs erupted nearby.
Yes, earlier nuclear missiles were hindered from reaching their target by shockwaves within the nuclear fireball. But now, after the surviving Ghidorah's Wings had traveled dozens of kilometers away, the shockwaves from previous explosions had diminished completely. This allowed humanity's most destructive weapon to strike unimpeded.
From satellites overhead, a coordinated strike rained down. Hundreds of nuclear warheads descended upon three locations, enveloping ten Ghidorah's Wings in nuclear fireballs.
This time, the magnitude of destruction far surpassed previous encounters. The overwhelming power of simultaneous nuclear detonations created a barrier of energy that temporarily prevented further missile launches.
The Ghidorah's Wings were engulfed in nuclear flames, repeatedly struck by a combination of nuclear weapons and railgun fire. Their roars were drowned out by the cacophony of explosions.
From satellite imagery, observers could clearly see the Ghidorah's Wings' heavily damaged forms within the dissipating fireballs. Their melting armor, massive wounds from railgun strikes, and the collapse of their towering frames painted a vivid picture of devastation.
Although none of the ten had perished outright, the extent of their injuries was undeniable.
It worked!
In the Monster combat command bases across East Asia, North America, and Europe, military officers and nuclear strategists collectively exhaled in relief. The previously looming sense of dread was finally alleviated.
Railguns were effective against the Ghidorah's Wings.
Of the ten Ghidorah's Wings targeted, all had been critically injured under the combined assault of nuclear strikes and 20 railguns. With this data, it was clear that the railgun networks established in East Asia were more than capable of annihilating the Ghidorah's Wings.
The only question left was how much time it would take.
Regardless, humanity had avoided the worst-case scenario.
There was no longer a need to retreat underground.
This alone was reason to celebrate.
As long as the Ghidorah's Wings were kept at bay, East Asia could systematically eliminate them, one by one. Though the process might be slower than anticipated, it was far better than the alternative.
This battle was a victory for humanity.
In the following 15 minutes, two additional waves of Ghidorah's Wings entered the human defense perimeter, coming under fire from the railguns. The results were encouraging: two Ghidorah's Wings had their heads blasted off and fell silent, while seven others were severely injured. The remaining 11 suffered moderate to severe damage.
Across the globe, humanity's counterattack had begun in earnest.
Nuclear weapons and railguns rained devastation on the enemy. Although several railguns were destroyed in the process, no human shelter, apart from the one initially lost to the earthquake, had been breached by the Ghidorah's Wings.
While some urban centers had been reduced to ash by the monsters' wrath, humanity's retaliation never ceased. From the Pearl River Delta in the south to the Himalayas, railguns relentlessly suppressed the Ghidorah's Wings. Victory seemed to be within reach.
The brilliant flashes of railgun discharges illuminated the sky as they targeted the extraterrestrial invaders. Despite knowing they might be destroyed in the next moment, the railguns fired without hesitation.
Tens of railgun shots brought down ten Ghidorah's Wings. Though the railguns were destroyed by retaliatory laser beams shortly afterward, subsequent nuclear strikes carried on their mission, inflicting further damage on the Ghidorah's Wings.
On the battlefield, drones and unmanned vehicles joined the fray. Conventional weapons, while ineffective against Godzilla, proved to be a nuisance for the Ghidorah's Wings. Thousands of rockets, armor-piercing rounds, and explosive shells harassed the alien invaders from mountain ranges and valleys.
Unlike Godzilla's atomic breath, the Ghidorah's Wings' lasers, though more far-reaching, lacked the destructive power to level entire mountains. This meant they could not simultaneously eliminate the vehicles hidden behind the terrain. As a result, unmanned vehicles, which had been underwhelming against Godzilla, became surprisingly effective against the Ghidorah's Wings.
Armor-piercing rounds, railguns, penetrator missiles, and high-explosive shells—all of humanity's firepower converged on the alien monsters. Every mountain-based railgun opened fire, every nuclear missile sought its opportunity to strike.
The combined assault began to turn the tide in humanity's favor.
If only humanity had known the Ghidorah's Wings struggled in ground combat, they could have avoided wasting so many nuclear weapons in the futile space interception efforts. Letting them land and engaging them on the ground might have been the more effective strategy.
In various Monster combat command bases, some officials entertained these thoughts.
Of course, such ideas were never voiced aloud.
As hours passed, humanity's weapons continued to repel the Ghidorah's Wings. In just three to four hours, the once 40-strong Ghidorah's Wings force had dwindled to 32. Of those, eight had fallen silent, and the remaining ones were severely injured.
Victory seemed inevitable.
But as humanity basked in their growing confidence, a sudden, unprecedented phenomenon unfolded over the Australian seas—a super hurricane and a massive, inexplicable redirection of ocean currents.
