With the start of term approaching, Harry found himself disinterested in reading.
If he stayed holed up in the library until classes resumed, he'd just be diving straight into nonstop schoolwork again. It would be as if there'd been no winter break at all—studying for an entire year without pause was bound to cause mental fatigue.
So, for the next few days, Harry was delightfully lazy.
He slept in late, lounged around the common room in a daze, or carried a chair up to the castle tower to bask in the sunlight with his eyes half closed.
He had to admit—wasting time like this felt amazing.
Then he'd head down to the Great Hall for brunch—or lunch, depending on when he managed to get up.
…
Sometimes he wandered the school grounds, walking across the fresh, green grass. The cool spring breeze refreshed him.
A beautiful unicorn trotted gracefully over the field.
To Harry's joy, the unicorn didn't mind letting him ride on its back.
So the first time Harry climbed onto it, he practically wanted to shout to the world, "I've got a mount—and it's a unicorn!"
The unicorn was tall and broad, and sitting on its back felt like lounging in a fluffy armchair.
Harry flopped forward against it, hugging its neck. The soft fur brushed against his skin—like holding a giant plush toy.
Riding a unicorn was nothing like riding a horse.
Horses were lean and bony, and their gait was jarring.
But with the unicorn's sturdy frame and powerful limbs, the ride was smooth and steady—like being chauffeured by a seasoned driver.
Whenever the unicorn moved, Harry felt only the faintest tremor.
The difference was like that between a clunky 1990s train and a sleek modern hover train.
Lounging close to its ear, Harry murmured, "Let's go, Xiaoxue."
The snowy-white unicorn seemed to understand perfectly and began to stroll across the grass at the edge of the Forbidden Forest.
These walks often lasted for hours.
Harry would fall asleep and wake up again several times on its back.
Only when the last rays of sunlight faded did he climb down.
The unicorn nuzzled his cheek affectionately before reluctantly returning to the forest—its silver-white figure eventually swallowed by the night.
…
Over the next few days, the professors began returning to Hogwarts.
The two broomsticks Harry had used as snowman arms were quietly returned to the broom shed. The snowman, of course, had long since melted away under the sun—Harry hadn't enchanted it.
Professor Sprout from Herbology was particularly pleased. Even before term officially started, she awarded Gryffindor ten points because the herbs in the greenhouses were thriving.
Harry didn't know if that was due to the plants themselves or the light element he possessed.
He had once fantasized about using the light element to accelerate herb growth—making them grow faster and stronger, like something a character in a cultivation novel might do.
From there, he'd monopolize the herb and potion market.
But that was just a fantasy.
He didn't have the time or energy to tend herbs every day. And even if the light element helped a bit, the effects weren't dramatic.
Why bother with something so thankless?
Of course, if Harry had been a crazed herbology fanatic, that would be another story.
When Professor Sprout expressed hope that he would help again next winter, Harry immediately declined.
Once was enough.
…
One evening, as Harry and Xiaoxue were strolling outside the school grounds, faint lights began to glimmer on the surface of the Black Lake. Excited voices followed.
Only then did Harry realize—term had begun.
Boats carrying students were approaching the shore. Harry considered waiting for Hermione, but then thought better of it—after what he'd said, things between them were unclear. It was probably better to leave.
"Harry!" a girl's voice rang out, startlingly loud in the hushed murmur.
He couldn't pretend not to hear it.
He turned around and looked toward one of the boats.
Hagrid was waving his massive hand, having only just noticed Harry after hearing Hermione's shout.
Beside him stood Hermione, barely reaching his waist.
Others in the boat were also staring—but most were fixated on the stunning creature beside Harry.
Night was falling, and the unicorn's silver glow was breathtaking. It lifted its head slightly, gazing at the sky. Harry stood quietly at its side, but most could only make out his silhouette—Xiaoxue's brilliance outshone everything.
One student hesitantly guessed that it might be a unicorn. At first, others scoffed—but then more and more began to believe it.
The crowd buzzed with emotion—some in awe, others in envy.
Once ashore, Hermione followed Harry silently, not saying a word.
They walked side by side.
Which was exactly how Harry wanted it—he had no idea what to say either.
"Harry Potter," someone called behind them.
Harry's brow furrowed even before he turned. Just from the voice, he could already tell the person would be insufferable.
"What do you want?" he asked flatly, turning to face a tall boy.
Like Malfoy, the boy had two cronies flanking him.
He looked down at Harry, clearly pleased with his height advantage.
Arrogantly, he asked, "Is that unicorn your pet?"
"Something like that," Harry replied, already guessing what this was about.
The boy's eyes lit up. "I like it. Name your price—I'll buy it."
He said it as though he were bestowing a great honor upon Harry.
"…Is your brain rusted shut?" Harry asked coldly, making no effort to hide his disdain.
